How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum

How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum | Social sciences | Scoop.it

In our emerging digital world, a new medium of exchange has developed: online engagement, especially via social media. Effectively engaging online requires a myriad of skills that we strive to foster in school – effective written communication, brevity and civility. These components are often highlighted in Digital Citizenship programs, but in tradition-bound K12 education, we often deride social media as trite or ineffective.

Interesting post with good ideas.

LibrarianLand's curator insight, April 7, 2:53 PM

Many students still do not understand the limitations of finding information on the free web. Google is about the extent of it and if it isn't found in the first few results, it does not exist or is too hard to find (or worse still, what is found must be "it.").

From article: "We need to ensure that they know how to evaluate a website, a blog post, a tweet, a Facebook entry. These evaluative skills transfer cross curricularly and prepare students for the broader world of online communication."

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy - Edudemic

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy - Edudemic | Social sciences | Scoop.it

ToolsMany teachers have added ‘digital literacy’ as number four on the list of literacies their students should have (or be working towards, in most cases). Reading, writing, and math are now followed by digital literacy. Obviously, depending on the grade level  you teach, your students will have different abilities in each of the four areas, so your expectations and your teaching approach may differ quite noticeably from your colleagues. But the nagging question still remains for many teachers – what exactly is digital literacy?

The eight C's devised by Doug Belshaw are a neat framework to consider for use in thinking about digital literacy. There are others that are also useful and that is also useful. It will be interesting to note how this field is defined over time.

Using TED Talks to convey an important message or spark creativity might be more effective in teaching students than an individual agenda or preconceived notion of what should be said. Furthermore, TED Talks challenges educators everywhere to think differently and encourage the same in their students.

These are the best TED Talks for any educator because they make us laugh, warm our hearts, break down barriers, and always inspire us to dig a little deeper and push a little harder, challenging your educator perspective.

Some really useful tips about structuring information and the impactful use of visuals.  I haven't been a huge fan of Prezi because they can be just too "busy" and disorientating when they incorporate too much spin as they move from image to image. These tips give good advice about how to keep it simple for best effect.

I've used Prezi as a way of presenting the notes from a visual group coaching session back to the participants.
