Social Entrepreneurship: A Fundamental Game Changer

Social Entrepreneurship: A Fundamental Game Changer | Social responsibility | Scoop.it

Published in Partnership with Forbes.com.

Article Highlights:Social Entrepreneurship has changed the way social change takes place. The change has three primary differentiating features: the blurring of the demarcation of profit and non-profit; the emphasis on impact and efficacy; and the sense of urgency and need to scale.

Whether there is a profit motive or not, the notion that business has a role to play in addressing societal issues is at the heart of today’s discourse on social entrepreneurship.   Defining what social entrepreneurship is as well as the difference between it and traditional non-profit management as well as philanthropy is a flourishing discourse.,,,  http://skollworldforum.org/2013/01/07/social-entrepreneurship-a-fundamental-game-changer/

Alicia Douglas's curator insight, March 11, 2013 7:01 AM

I think it's a very exciting time to be involved. People are thinking differently about philanthropy. They are not just writing checks to established nonprofits, —to the United Way or the Red Cross. They’re saying, ‘Well, there are these Kiva loans and there are these social businesses and there are these double-bottom-line, triple-bottom-line investments.’ There are a million different ways to be philanthropic in 2013.

I also feel this not just the thinking of the Miliennial it everyone who is looking at better ways to give we are at a critical tipping point in society billions of dollars are donated annually to causes...money alone rarely solves any of the major problems society faces. It’s about creating a movement of social purpose of people who doesn't mind getting their hands dirty and rolling up their sleeves.

The Rockefeller Foundation Creates Dedicated Fund for Social Enterprise and Impact Investing Growth in Asia

The Rockefeller Foundation Creates Dedicated Fund for Social Enterprise and Impact Investing Growth in Asia | Social responsibility | Scoop.it

It is reported that combined assets among high net worth individuals in the Southeast Asia region total $10 trillion.  Avantage Ventures, a social investment and advisory company in Hong Kong and Beijing, estimates that if one percent of all investments with Asian interests were dedicated to impact investing, it would be enough to support the funding needs of social enterprises in Asia.

For a region where millions lack essential access to education, clean water, and other essential services, the need to mobilize capital is urgent.  Given this scenario, The Rockefeller Foundation announced that it has set up the Impact Economy Innovations Fund (IEIF) for Southeast Asia.

This isn’t the first time The Rockefeller Foundation created such fund.  Earlier this year, they teamed up with Dasra and Omidyar Network to launch the India Impact Economy Innovations Fund.

Corporate social responsibility could swamp social enterprise in 2013

Corporate social responsibility could swamp social enterprise in 2013 | Social responsibility | Scoop.it

How many social enterprises have the ability to create 1,000 new apprenticeships, or jobs of any kind over the next couple of years? I suspect the answer is that few have the aspiration, and none the ability. Making a difference to the disadvantaged has become interesting to multinational corporations.

How is your social enterprise going to compete with that?

We've already seen swathes of small but worthy social enterprises steamrollered into submission, if not squashed out of existence. The work programme is just one example of the way public sector service commissioners prefer the convenience of a single corporate contract to managing a plethora of little organisations working in the same patch.
