The core question for me is midway through this article. Is Apple being out innovated? In the end the Apple brand stands for innovation, so to lose even a tiny bit on that core competition means Apple entire brand is at risk.
This is the innovators' dilemma. How do you keep innovating at a pace that made your brand in the first place when it is easy to fall back into incremental improvements. If I had to bet on open source vs. command and control open source (the Apple Apps are watched like a hawk by Apple) then I choose open source as millions seem to be doing especially in those places that surf the first wave of cool tech (far east).
