The following infographic is based off of social media research from Boston College’s John Gallaugher & Sam Ransbotham. Their “3M Framework” lays out the type of communication social media enables between businesses and customers. It’s important to realize that this framework highlights the greater social media ecosystem. Individual websites such as Facebook or Twitter are components of this larger ecosystem. Businesses are trying to keep pace with the ongoing innovations in the marketplace, in the meantime consumers are more and more engaged via #mobile and other tools. Along the way a lot of valuable #Data is generated, therefore opportunities are abound if you can capture the right data and offer the right engagement for your #customers in return. 

 

" Experts say that 90 percent of all the data in the world right now was generated during the last two years. In addition, only 20 percent of this data is structured, or arranged in columns and rows which can be analyzed using traditional analytics tools.

As such, eighty percent of this data is “unstructured;”  pictures, videos or posts that come from sources like Facebook, YouTube and Instagram. These unstructured data represent people’s interests, opinions and activities, and if marketers can create insights out of these data by having the ability to store, administer and investigate them, then that’s a huge advantage for them.

Analysis of big social media data allows marketers to see relevant trends which allow them to create more personalized and highly customized content. People respond more to campaigns that are relevant to their needs and what they like, share and talk about."

We are on a brink of another evolution in technology - wearable comfortable quantifiable consumer products, I can already forsee the day when we get to a point of ingestible or absorbable technology, there are great examples of that already, but we are one decade away from that.

IBM projects that by 2017, CMOs will spend more on IT than CIOs, and the CMO role will overlap significantly with that of the CTO or CIO. Google just made two major announcements. Long-term, these could change the face of online marketing and advertising for almost every company.

 

Announcement One: Google AdID

With AdID, a proposed replacement for third party cookies, Google is looking to become the gateway online advertising companies need to go through in order to collect data.

 

If Google shuts off access to AdID for a network, either because they are not paying Google’s fees (it isn’t clear if there would be a cost to providers over time) or they are not abiding by Google’s terms, they would lose the ability to sell audience-targeted advertising.

 

Announcement Two: Google Is Shutting Off Organic Search Keyword Data

Yesterday, Search Engine Watch reported that Google is shutting off all remaining organic search keyword reporting. Going forward, marketers will not be able to report on or segment organic search traffic from Google.

 

Yes, Google and Big Data are a Big Deal

Big Data is a big deal in online advertising. According to an article in yesterday’s Wall Street Journal, “a focus of [Advertising Week] will be the rise of big data.” According to Matt Freeman, the chairman of Advertising Week and partner at Bain Capital, marketing is becoming “equal parts art and science.” He goes on to say data is now foundational to multiple areas within online marketing.

This year, we carried out the same studies on mobile search and learned that 88% of site visitors driven by mobile search ads would not otherwise click on the business’s organic listing when ads are paused. From March 2012 - April 2013, we conducted Mobile Search Ads Pause studies on more than 300 US AdWords accounts from 12 key verticals. The research focused on search terms that had an organic listing on the first page and adjusted for factors like seasonality. Similar to our previous study of search ads across all devices, we found that an average of 88% of clicks generated by mobile ads were incremental.
