Empathy represses analytic thought, and vice versa: Brain physiology limits simultaneous use of both networks

Empathy represses analytic thought, and vice versa: Brain physiology limits simultaneous use of both networks | Social Neuroscience | Scoop.it
When the brain's analytic network is engaged, our ability to appreciate the human cost of our action is repressed, researchers have found.

'At rest, our brains cycle between the social and analytical networks. But when presented with a task, healthy adults engage the appropriate neural pathway, the researchers found.

The study shows for the first time that we have a built-in neural constraint on our ability to be both empathetic and analytic at the same time'

It's interesting how it looks so similar to so many other systems that we have.

Mind Management: Researchers Explore New Ways to Influence Minds

Mind Management: Researchers Explore New Ways to Influence Minds | Social Neuroscience | Scoop.it

The Pentagon’s Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) wants to understand the science behind what makes people violent, and then find ways to hijack their minds by implanting false, but believable stories in their brains, with hopes of evoking peaceful thoughts: We’re friends, not enemies.

Interesting.... Hypnosis is receiving some new respect from neuroscientists as brain scans show how a suggestion can change the mechanism of perception.
