It appears that Foursquare has just passed 5 million users if new user account numbers are correct. It's taken just a month and a half for the location-based social network to accumulate one million more members. It took the same amount of time for Foursquare to reach four million members and for the network to hit 3 million users.
Social media has become an integral part of modern society. There are general social networks with user bases larger than the population of most countries. There are niche sites for virually every special interest out there. There are sites to share photos, videos, status updates, sites for meeting new people and sites to connect with old friends.
