Don’t Be Fooled By Vanity Metrics

Don’t Be Fooled By Vanity Metrics | Social Networks & Social Media by numbers | Scoop.it
Startups love to point to big growth numbers, and the press loves to publish them. We are as guilty as anyone else in this regard: one million downloads, 10 million registered users, 200 million tweets per day.
[...]
The vanity metrics aren’t completely useless, just don’t be fooled by them. There are ways to back into real numbers from the vanity metrics. VC Fred Wilson blogged today about his 30/10/10 rule: 30 percent of downloads or registered users are active once a month, 10 percent are active once a day, and 10 percent of the daily users will be the maximum number of concurrent users. These are the patterns he is seeing in his portfolio companies and the startups pitching him.

Twitter vs Facebook: Which Social Network Users Are The Most Active?

Twitter vs Facebook: Which Social Network Users Are The Most Active? | Social Networks & Social Media by numbers | Scoop.it
As you can see, some 31% – or about 232 million – Facebook users check that network several times a day. This compares with 20% for Twitter, and just 3% for LinkedIn and MySpace.

21% of Facebook users check out what’s going on once each day, against 13% for Twitter.

MySpace does own the crown in one category: 29% of MySpace users don’t check the network at all. Ever. This contrasts with just 1% on Facebook, but a shocking 18% on Twitter.

Indeed, 53% of Twitter profiles use the network somewhere between every four weeks and never. Which however you want to justify it, has got to be a disturbing statistic for a platform that lives and dies by ‘what’s happening?’.

Twitter Reaches 200 Million Tweets A Day, But How Many Come From Bots?

Twitter Reaches 200 Million Tweets A Day, But How Many Come From Bots? | Social Networks & Social Media by numbers | Scoop.it
Twitter just crossed another huge milestone. People are now sending 200 million tweets per day across the service. This is up from 65 million tweets per day a year ago, or about 200 percent growth in a year.
Well, “people” is perhaps a generous term. Twitter is filled with automated bots Tweeting out, as well as feeds from publishers.
But other data suggests that Twitter’s audience keeps on growing. ComScore estimates that Twitter.com alone attracted 139 million unique visitors worldwide in May, 2011, a 54 percent annual increase. On a worldwide basis, Twitter is bigger than MySpace. In the U.S., however, traffic is up only 12.5 percent to Twitter.com, which attracted an estimated 27 million unique visitors in May, 2011.

The Growth of Social Media

The Growth of Social Media | Social Networks & Social Media by numbers | Scoop.it

Say what you will about the tidal wave that is social media: it’s over-hyped, a fad halfway through its 15 minutes, that <insert social network, platform, app> surely won’t be around in a few years’ time.

But take a look below at the steep curve of the user growth rate in all age ranges and demographics, and the continuing pervasiveness of social networking into every facet of work, play and life in general. It’s hard to argue that social media hasn’t changed forever how we interact and connect online. See for yourself: (click image to enlarge)
