Multiple pathways: Blending xMOOCs & cMOOCs - by George Siemens

Is it possible to blend cMOOCs and xMOOCs approach? George Siemens says no, but it is possible to create synergies between different  parallel layers...I think that real paths of real students could be something more complexe than we can imagine: if they are allowed to do it, perhaps they  will mix  the two layers in very personal and different ways in continuous evolution during the learning experience...what do you think about it?

From the early leader/founder of MOOCs

KCenter SKEMA's curator insight, May 20, 2014 12:30 PM

"the difference between xMOOCs & cMOOCs and possible ways to blend them.

The interest in making xMOOCs more like cMOOCs (a few silly folks have called it MOOC 2.0 – haha) seems to be growing. In particular, MOOC providers are adding “social” in the same way that vitamins are added to food, “Now, with beta-carotene”! After much discussion at our designjam, I’ve concluded that cMOOCs and xMOOCs are incompatible. They cannot be blended. Pedagogically and philosophically, they are too different. It’s like trying to make a cat a dog. Entertaining, perhaps, but a fruitless venture."

Designing Your First MOOC from Scratch: Recommendations After Teaching “Digital Education of the Future”

"(... ) designing and running a MOOC from scratch is not an easy task and requires a high workload. This workload should be shared among those generating contents, those fostering discussion in the community around the MOOC, those supporting the recording and subtitling of audiovisual materials, and those advertising the MOOC, among others. Sometimes the teaching staff has to assume all these tasks (and consequently the associated workload) due to the lack of adequate resources in the institution. This is just one example of the many problems that teachers need to be aware of before riding the MOOC wave.

This paper offers a set of recommendations that are expected to be useful for inexperienced teachers that now face the challenge of designing and running a MOOC. Most of these recommendations come from the lessons learned after teaching a nine-week MOOC on educational technologies, called“Digital Education of the Future”, at the Universidad Carlos III in Madrid, Spain.

MOOCs and copyright law

MOOCs and copyright law | Social networks & MOOCs | Scoop.it

"Massive open online courses (MOOCs) are still pretty new but more and more universities, platform providers and publishers are beginning to create MOOCs to raise their profile and showcase high-quality materials. But there is a risk that reputations can take a serious hit if materials and data are being used incorrectly, or without permission."

Excellent analysis of the copyright issues that educators need to consider as they  utilise the open online course revolution. There are such opportunities for learning and teaching but TIME needs to be given to ensuring that resources used are attributed appropriately, are legitimate and permissions sought where necessary. Many MOOC platforms are commercial in nature and profit focused (in the long term) so Statutory licences and Educational exceptions are  not applicable.

How Useful Is Twitter for Learning in Massive Communities? An Analysis of Two MOOCs

How Useful Is Twitter for Learning in Massive Communities? An Analysis of Two MOOCs | Social networks & MOOCs | Scoop.it

"... an analysis of Twitter usage surrounding a German-language MOOC that could indicate future trends in technology-enhanced learning. Our research focuses on the Twitter stream accompanying the course and ask how Twitter is used and for what purposes by the heavy twitter users, by the educators / organisers / guestspeakers in the course and if tweets from “outside” get into to the stream.."

Project Planning a MOOC

The course teams involved with our MOOCs included experienced academics with familiarity in developing materials on a learning platform. Nonetheless, for each of them it was their first experience of MOOCs, as it was for the project planning team.

Delivering a MOOC

A range of styles and learning methods were adopted by the four MOOCs, appropriate to the subject matter covered. A MOOC structure of six weeks and 5-10 student effort hours per week of study appeared to be just right for the majority of students (55%). Some considerations for future delivery include:

< Well designed announcements at the beginning and end of each week that articulate with the topic coverage, learning activities and assessment methods can be effective at maintaining student interest and motivation.

< Management of forum threads and posts is a critical factor in dealing with massive scale short courses to ensure the majority of students are not affected negatively by the behaviour of a small number of the community, while preserving the openness of the discussion areas.

< The Coursera platform tools are significant and comprehensive in terms of plotting overall student activity, allowing evaluation of assessment data, as well as usage statistics on video resources and other learning activities; however, further refinement of these tools to enable both students and teaching staff to understand their progression at an individual level is necessary (and underway).

Learner Experiences with MOOCs and Open Online Learning

Learner Experiences with MOOCs and Open Online Learning is an e-book in which student authors describe and reflect upon their open online learning experiences. Current conversations around educational innovations in general, and MOOCs in particular, lack student voices. This book enables learners to share their stories, thus contributing to our understanding of open online learning...
