Curating vs. Collecting on Twitter for the Education Professional

Curating vs. Collecting on Twitter for the Education Professional | Social networking in the classroom | Scoop.it
NDgrazer's curator insight, January 9, 4:18 AM

Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano has an interesting and highly visual post on collecting vs. curating with Twitter, and on the curation potential Twitter has in store for those involved in education.

She quotes Mike Fisher writing: "Collecting is what kids do when asked to find resources for a particular topic. Usually, it represents the first 3 or 4 hits on a Google search, without meaning, discernment, or connections.

Curating is different. It’s the Critical Thinker’s collection, and involves several nuances (see Figure 1) that separate it as an independent and classroom-worthy task."

Useful. Resourceful. 7/10

Now In 600+ Schools And Open To Any Student, Lore Gives Higher Ed A Next-Gen Social Network | TechCrunch | Social networking in the classroom | Scoop.it

With social networking having permeated the way we look for jobs, share photos and music, and discover news, a startup named Lore is on a mission to do the same for higher education, and potentially re-shape the way teachers and students communicate. Formerly known as CourseKit, the Thiel and Founder’s Fund-backed startup is doing that with a platform that is part Facebook and part Blackboard — for courses. In other words, Lore aims to act as a replacement for the infamous course management system with a gradebook, calendar and document uploading (for class assignments), while giving students a social network-style newsfeed for classroom conversations.  Techcrunch article.

McLuhan (1911-1980): medium is message - Gutenburg to Zuckerberg | Social networking in the classroom | Scoop.it

In essence, McLuhan opened our minds to the role of technology and media by asking the right questions. He wanted to know how technology and media affect our minds, habits, society and culture. Late in his life he gave us, what in my opinion, is his most useful piece of work – the tetrad. His "tetrad" of four media laws tried to clarify the nature & impact of a technology or medium

Can Twitter Replace Traditional Professional Development? | Social networking in the classroom | Scoop.it

Twitter and Facebook might soon replace traditional professional development for teachers. Instead of enduring hours-long workshops a few times a year, teachers could reach out to peers on the Internet in real time for advice on things like planning a lesson (or salvaging a lesson that’s going wrong), overcoming classroom management problems, or helping students with disabilities.

Or, at least, that’s what a group of Internet-savvy educators who convened in New York City this week are hoping.  Mindshift article.
