Great compare & contrast- I believe "A" emphasis is on teaching, while "B" emphasis is on learning -and sets the stage for personal learning.

Krissy Venosdale revised her Classroom A and Classroom B poster recently to represent "What does Learning Look Like". Some of these Classroom B descriptors indicate a learner-centered environment. What are some other descriptions that you would include?

Here are some of Krissy's thoughts behind Learning:

"Learning is a journey.  Our kids change. The world changes.  We change as teachers.  This morning, I made a revised version of Classroom A versus Classroom B.  As someone pointed out, it’s not a black and white issue. There is so much grey and so much individual choice.  I’m not saying A or B is better for everyone. I’m saying you’ve gotta think and really understand what you want learning to look like in your classroom."

Beth Dichter's curator insight, March 30, 2013 11:51 PM

There are many learning models that we may explore, and this one is presented a bit differently than others I have seen. Quoting from the post "The goal of the model is simple enough–not pure academic proficiency, but instead authentic self-knowledge, diverse local and global interdependence, adaptive critical thinking, and adaptive media literacy."

There are nine domains in this model (listed below) and the post provides additional information.

* Five Learning Actuators

* Changing Habits

* Transparency

* Self-Initiated Transfer

* Mentoring and Community

* Changing Roles

* Climate of Assessment

* Thought and Abstraction

* Expanding Literacies

Personalizing Education: "What If..." - Ben Kestner, TEDxKids 2012

Ben Kestner studied flute at the London College of music and in Berlin with Andreas Blau and after spending time playing and teaching he pursued a career in education. He is currently Middle School Principal at St. John's International School in Belgium. He believes that we need to push the reset button when we talk about the future of education and start again.

After listening to this TED Talk from Ben Kestner, it validated the real reasons why we should personalize learning. He boldly states that "technology, school and community need to converge as ONE".  He sees that learning needs to be related to the learners world where they can explore it more deeply, take action and make mistakes. I could not agree more. How do we begin to turn education on it's heels and create a culture shift? Chime in after you listen to this TED Talk and look for Personalize Learning's interview with Ben.

The Most Important Question Every Assessment Should Answer

The Most Important Question Every Assessment Should Answer | Social network in corporate learning | Scoop.it

"The difference between assessment of learning and assessment for learning is a crucial one, in many ways indicative of an important shift in education.

Traditionally, tests have told teachers and parents how a student “does,” then offers a very accessible point of data (usually percentage correct and subsequent letter grade) that is reported to parents as a performance indicator."

"Assessment for learning" versus "assessment of learning" is also promoted as a key component of the learning portfolio all colleges of pharmacy need to have to demonstrate student achievement.

Aunty Alice's curator insight, October 6, 2013 8:40 PM

I have practiced a system that covers four of the 5 key strategies for many years starting at five years of age.  I would not teach any other way. With this kind of assessment students after seven years of age can lead parent teacher conferences with ease and confidence. Had a dad in tears once who confessed it was the first time his son had talked meaningfully to him about his learning. Then I was in tears too....

Aunty Alice's curator insight, November 21, 2013 8:03 PM

A good little diagram but it does not address the issue of how to do it..it requires modelling, first by the teacher, then slowly devolving the responsibility to the learner, and focus on one subject area at a time e.g. Literacy . In my experience it also requires set aside time with each student to assess together, recording what has been discussed so it is not forgotten. I am talking about elementary learners here..

evangelina chavez's curator insight, April 12, 2013 7:54 PM
