3D Printing Robot Produces Chairs And Tables From Recycled Waste | Social Mercor | Scoop.it

Two years ago, a Dutch student named Dirk Vander Kooij was designing furniture and preparing for his graduation project when he was inspired by an old 3D printer. So he got his hands on an industrial robot from a Chinese production line and reprogrammed it into a 3D printer to print furniture using recycled materials from old refrigerators."

This is the future, not only 3D printing but being able to use recyclable materials to produce furniture and not only in 1 design, variety and uniqueness are the key element here, and to be able to do it in 3 hours.

Why stop at chairs? What’s stopping any other product being designed this very way?

SolarWorld substitutes a panel’s conventional polymer-based backsheet with lightweight glass to better shield energy-producing solar cells from the elements. This advance enables SolarWorld to extend its linear performance guarantee to 30 years, up from 25 years, offering only 0.35 percentage points in lower performance protection over each of the 30 years. Sunmodule Protect solar panels are guaranteed to provide 86.85 percent of their nameplate performance after 30 years of operation.

Sandwiched between glass on both front and back, solar cells are optimally protected against environmental factors such as water intrusion. Cells also are less susceptible to shear stress, thereby reducing cell breakage. Even with a second pane of glass, Sunmodule Protect solar panels remain lightweight – at about 46 pounds.

We Need To Redesign Our Economy To Make It Work For Profits, People, And The Planet

We Need To Redesign Our Economy To Make It Work For Profits, People, And The Planet | Social Mercor | Scoop.it

When the richest quarter of the world’s population uses about half of our global resources--and take the liberty to produce half of the global waste--while another third live in poverty, it is clear that our economic and societal systems are failing us.

That is even before we have reached the point where our planet needs to accommodate 9 billion mostly urbanized and aging people. Add in the rapidly growing middle class in China, India, and elsewhere who also want their share, and it is easy to see that our current path is unsustainable.

Digital Sustainability's curator insight, March 18, 2013 10:57 AM

The recycling of plastic film climbed 4% to reach 1 billion pounds annually in 2011 for the first time, according to the recently released “2011 National Postconsumer Plastic Bag & Film Recycling Report.” The category of “plastic film” includes plastic bags, product wraps, and commercial shrink film. The report, developed by Moore Recycling Associates, Inc. on behalf of the American Chemistry Council (ACC), noted that the recycling of plastic film has grown 55% since just 2005.

According to the report, approximately 58% of U.S.-recovered postconsumer film was consumed domestically in 2011—up from 53% in 2010—largely due to growth in the plastic and composite lumber industry, the primary market for this material. The composite lumber industry showed a 120 million-pound increase in consumption from 2010 to 2011 to reach 55% of the total market for recovered film. Consumption of postconsumer plastic film by the film and sheet industry, the second largest market for this material, held steady at 100 million pounds, or 16% of the total market. - See more at: http://www.packworld.com/sustainability/recycling/plastic-film-recycling-rises-1-billion-lb-annually#sthash.Jg55xknl.dpuf

Some interesting fact and stats about the effects of social media.

Could just be assumptions and made up if not for the references, worth investigating further for more accuracy.

Social media was a big step in extroversion and news, however it was a plummet in personal privacy. The integration of social media into everything is convenient, yes, but it leads one to believe using it to be mandatory to have because of all the disadvantages compared to using it.

Aside from privacy, the addiction to social media is extremely evident in the younger generation and often leads to online arguments, befriending complete strangers or even identity frauds.
