Gigabot 3D Printer Goes Large - 3D Printing Industry | Social Mercor | Scoop.it

re:3D — one of Austin’s newest start-ups: Gigabot with its USP is all about size: A considerable increase compared with other 3D printers at the same level.  “our project is aimed at designing the first large-format 3D printer… that you can take home with you. It’s not only about taking the amazing technology of 3D printing and amplifying it. If we’re successful, we can envision entire markets opening up to use this technology. Markets which have struggled to maintain the status quo, let alone use some of the cutting-edge technology that for the rest of the world is an overnight delivery away. We believe that by making a production-quality model of our 3D printer, and putting it in the hands of small businesses anywhere on the planet, will give them the flexibility to sustain their community, their business, and ultimately, the world we live in.”

The people at Organovo Holdings have teamed up with autodesk to design bioprinting machine. This machines main idea and fuction is to have the capability to print living tissues and hopefully move on to a more complex task such as organs. Although presentlyhe people at Orgnovo are able to create a slice of tissue, they require alot more hard work to reach their goal of being able to create a whole liver.Being able to recreate human body parts with the aid of 3d printing may not be so far off into the future. This would be music to the ears of people who have lost limbs or have been critically damaged in someway. This could also mean that we are able to sustain a elderly persons vital organs for longer period of time.

Defining “Big Data” | Ideas Lab | Social Mercor | Scoop.it

Big Data, a recently launched journal, explains how we can define and make sense of "big data."

The term “big data” has emerged as a popular way to describe the increasing volume of information available about companies, consumers and other subjects. But how can we define and make sense of big data?

According to IBM, big data spans four dimensions: volume, velocity, variety and veracity. “Big data is more than simply a matter of size; it is an opportunity to find insights in new and emerging types of data and content, to make your business more agile, and to answer questions that were previously considered beyond your reach,”

We’ve learned a lot about cancer, but far from enough. Doctors have gotten better at diagnosing the disease, but they still struggle to pick the right weapon for a patient to fight cancer’s aggressive behavior. “Cancer is very complicated and very different from patient to patient,” says Michael Gerdes, cancer researcher at GE Global Research (GRC) in New York. “We really have not done an adequate job matching patients to therapies. We get some patients but we miss a lot.”
