I’m an infrequent runner. Sometimes I’ll run if I have to chase down a paper that blew out of my hand. Or to chase down Shadow when he gets away from me. Or perhaps I’m late to get somewhere, so I’ll do this kinda run/kinda fast walk thing. But I call it running. It makes me feel more…athletic.

 

But, no. I’m not a runner. At all. I’ve tried, and I can’t get into it. Sure, I’d be better off in some ways if I ran. But I also know I would pay for it in the knees.

Segments are usually FINANCIAL measures such as VIPs or "multi-buyers". Segments is one way to quantify groups within your marketing. Personas are another. Personas identify archetypes and group characteristics (instead of financial segments). Personas help develop creative segments make sure you make money.

It’s funny how clients’ needs evolve over time. For example, I’ve been noticing that most clients who come to Outspoken Media seeking blog consulting services these days aren’t asking whether or not they should take the plunge and create a corporate blog. In 2012, they’ve already got that.


Now what they’re looking to do is get more from that blog. They’re looking to hire a social media agency to help them increase engagement, usability and the overall function of their blog. I’m lucky that many of these audits and strategy documents fall on my plate, which means I get to look at awesome blogs and make them even more awesome. Who wouldn’t love that?

Sometimes you’ll need to move your blog from one host to another. It’s a bit of a pain and might seem a daunting task if you’ve never done it before.


But transferring a site is a fairly straightforward process that you can do yourself with an FTP program and this step-by-step guide.


Before trying the DIY method, it’s worth checking to see whether your new hosting company offers a site transfer service for new customers. Many do—but check whether there’s a cost involved. I’ve seen free services for this, but I’ve also seen prices around $300!

When it comes to blogging, a number of platforms have come and gone. Recently, Posterous was acquired by Twitter, signifying that a shut-down of the platform was imminent.


I noticed this in a big way; my blog, called I Love Tumblr, which focuses on Tumblr tips and tutorials, had a huge influx of new traffic (especially to my Tumblr vs Posterous article—no surprise there).


I also started to receive a ton of emails from former Posterous users asking me if the Tumblr platform was right for them (or whether WordPress or Blogger was a better choice).


In most instances, I (like Darren) would advise a self-hosted WordPress blog above all others, however, in instances where that really isn’t desired, I have been able to honestly (and highly) recommend Tumblr to many bloggers...

Every successful blogger I’ve spoken to had several failed blogs behind them before they finally honed in on their blogging goals and set up a blog that would achieve those goals.


Like most bloggers I set up my first blog as an experiment. I had a vague idea of what I wanted to write about and a secret goal for my blogging.


Well, we all want our blogs to become bestselling books and get made into movies starring Meryl Streep or Julia Roberts don’t we?


But I wasn’t just hoping to kick start my travel writing career and gain worldwide recognition for my writing. I had a few other goals too:


  • because I’d recently moved from Costa Rica to Australia I wanted to share personal stories so family and friends could follow our adventures;
  • because I’ve lived overseas in eight different countries and travelled to many more I wanted to inspire and inform other women so they could travel more or move overseas too;
  • I wanted my blog to be a fun creative outlet and keep it separate from my web design and web copy writing business.

What happened to all the railroads? Have you ever pondered that question?


In the 1800s, the railroad industry in the U.S. was booming. New businesses were sprouting up every year, and inventors were creating newer and more efficient locomotives. First it was steam, then it was petrol, then it was diesel. Times were good, and America had a bright, rail-based future.


So what happened? Why isn’t the country blanketed in rail routes and why doesn’t everyone hop on the metro-line in front of their house each day to go to work? Today, the railroad companies are a shell of what they once were. Why? Because the automobile came along and ran them into the ground.


But did this have to happen?


No. There were things railroad companies could have done to cater to the people who made their businesses possible, but instead they dug in their heels and said, “We’re in the railroad business,” and they stayed the course.

Images allow you to express what words can’t.


They draw the viewer in and elicit an emotional impact, providing your users with information while confirming that what your selling or promoting is real.


There are many affordable options available to purchase stock photography. This may be a blessing or a curse. Affordability often comes at the cost of originality.


It’s important to consider your ideals and the image’s ability to illustrate a concept perfectly. But consider originality as well. You wouldn’t want to fall into the trap of using cliche imagery because it’s easy and convenient.

The 80/20 Value of Titles


Recently, Rand did one of the best Whiteboard Fridays I've seen in a while (I do watch all of them) about increasing the likelihood of your content going viral. He touches briefly upon the importance of your title for click through rate and sharability, but in this post I'd like to take a more in depth look at titles and how they help spread your content. (By the way, this is my first YouMoz - woohoo!)


In my opinion, the elements of writing click worthy titles deserve more attention. In the wonderful marketing book "Made To Stick", the Heath brothers note that any good news or editorial writer may spend 80% of their time crafting the title (or "lead") and then whatever time they have left on the body of the content.


For those familiar with 80/20, what this means is, the size of the title compared to the actual content (and time spent crafting it) disproportionately affects the success of that content. It's one small piece of text with a lot power!
