What Do You Know? Examining the Big 4 Online Answer Sites

What Do You Know? Examining the Big 4 Online Answer Sites | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

[You can use the Big 4 online Answer Sites for market research, content ideas, and to build credibility and thought leadership for you and your company. Here's how.]

An ideal connection between social media and search might just be “Answer” sites. The essential concept behind an answer site is that visitors can post a question eager to get it answered by someone considered an expert, who is knowledgeable in the subject matter. The response could also be powered by public knowledge with consensus determining the “best” answer. Answer sites offer users the capability to be both the inquisitor and the expert. More often than not, in basic human interaction, we can answer each others’ questions based on our own personal familiarity. We can achieve this on a massive scale using these Answer Sites.

10 Key Facts, Stats and Findings about the State of Social Media in 2011 | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Social media has evolved rapidly and we have seen the emergence of social networks that 12 months ago did not exist.

Some surprises this year included the launch of Google+ (which acquired 25 million users in less than 30 days), Pinterest which grew at more than 512% and Tumblr (the microblogging platform) which is now approaching 50 million unique users a month

Mobile social networking and geo-location services such as Foursquare continue to make their impact felt and have not gone away despite the threat of Facebook “places”

Today 1.2 billion people worldwide access social networks and it is redefining the web...

Screw Overnight Success: How to Really Build Long-Term Growth Online

Screw Overnight Success: How to Really Build Long-Term Growth Online | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

“Actually, I’m an overnight success. But it took twenty years.” – Monty Hall

There’s no shortage of overnight success stories on the web. Google “make money online” and you’ll be flooded with sleazy ads promising thousands of dollars of income per day if you just buy their product. For those of you who may be new to the internet business game, it can be intimidating and even off-putting.

Despite what the ads will tell you, very few business people earn a comfortable living after a few days or weeks in business. A more reliable – and more profitable – way to approach your business is with a long-term plan. When you’re patient, you’ll be more likely to build a thriving audience that’s ready to support your work...

Social media success is fun! Social media satire 32

Social media success is fun! Social media satire 32 | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

An excellent analysis of my friend Peter. While this position is called "satire", it's the reality today. Indeed, social media take a big part of our time and it's essential that management be done carefully and tools (Buffer is a good example) to avoid problems in our lives every day!

Social media success is fun! Social media satire 32.

I often wonder if we sometimes take our social media lives just a little too seriously? That’s why I love Mondays and social media satire!

Social media has been a HUGE subject this year throughout the world and the topic of probably millions of conversations in every language imaginable, but as the ‘Year of Social Media’ comes to an end, I am seeing some significant changes...

Why are we so willing to risk our own privacy online?

Why are we so willing to risk our own privacy online? | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
The notion of privacy both offline and online is currently in contention and is featuring heavily in the spotlight.

The concept of privacy is reaching a very fragile state. With every single status update that we share, we are foregoing a part of our privacy, readily handing over data to pretty much anyone that wants to access it. Yet it is something that we seem so willing to do. Privacy as a concept will only last as long as society functions in a way to protect it and that is rapidly eroding.

While we can access tools or processes that allow us to protect our own privacy, as a society we are increasingly ignoring these in favour of sharing pretty much everything...

How a Blog Can Help Grow Your Offline Business

How a Blog Can Help Grow Your Offline Business | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

I’ve been both an avid blogger and a huge advocate for blogging for many years now. But until recently I’ve never had any personal “success” to be able to back up my claims that blogging isn’t just an excellent pastime, it’s also a tremendously useful business resource.

Sure, it’s easy to point people to the likes of ProBlogger as a testament to the power of blogging when answering the question “why have a blog?” but I’ve always struggled to relate any major achievements of my own as further proof to my assertions.

Until now.

5 ways to protect your work online

5 ways to protect your work online | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Anyone who shares their work online knows there’s a risk they’re taking. Photographs are constantly ripped off, articles plagiarized, and even code is often stolen. Despite those risks, there is something to be said for having an instant audience online.

Rather than just leave your work out there to be stolen, there are certain precautions you can take to prove ownership, ensure that your work is properly credited, and more. We’ve put together a list of five very different methods, which will enable you to choose the one that is right for you and the nature of your work.

If you want to find out if your work has been used without your permission online, there are a few sites that can help you out. TinEye is a great way for photographers to find where their images have been posted, while bloggers can use a site like Copyscape...

Product Spam Is Out Of Control And Must Be Stopped

Product Spam Is Out Of Control And Must Be Stopped | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

We are living in a new age of austerity. Environmentalism is no longer just a crunchy cause, but also a corporate mandate. Simple is good.
So why has product spam spun out of control? Perhaps HP (and others) didn't get the memo? Whatever the reason, one thing is now painfully clear: Product spam must stop.

Spam Attack!

As exhibit A, check out Hewlett Packard's new computers released yesterday. In fact, it's practically impossible not to check them out: HP has coughed up a number of machines at the same time, and they're filling the homepages of many a gadget site...

Creating Online Courses 101

Creating Online Courses 101 | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Blog monetization is a tough challenge for a lot of people. In this post I’ll help you overcome it.

The best way to make money with your blog (even when your traffic is low) is by selling your own digital products—especially online courses that teach people to do or achieve something.

Content marketing (blogging, social media) is the way to position yourself as an expert and build relationships with your audience. Both will make it easy for you to sell a course on your blog.

Make Money Locally—and Globally—Through Your Blog

Make Money Locally—and Globally—Through Your Blog | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Our blog is less than a year old.

We started Firepole Marketing less than a year ago, and we’ve done pretty well with it over that time. A lot of people know who we are, and what we do.

I’ve even been dubbed the Freddy Krueger of Blogging.

And while we’re not at the scale of a major site like Copyblogger, we still do pretty well, to the point that we make a decent amount of money online, and occasionally even help others to do the same.

We aren’t the only ones to have done that, and I remember that a year ago, when I saw others make the same sort of claim, I always wanted more information. I wanted to know how much money they were really making, and where that money was coming from...

Tips For Business Success

Tips For Business Success | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

We’re all capable of success online. In fact, let’s define success before we go any further. If we were going to use a dictionary definition for success it’d look something like this: suc-cess [suh k-ses]

noun

1. the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors
2. the attainment of wealth, position, honors, or the like.
3. A successful performance of achievement: The play was an instant success.
4. A person or thing that is successful: She was a great success on the talk show...

How To Protect Your Business

How To Protect Your Business | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

“The strange thing is that everyday, we see people dying – but don’t actually believe we will.” – Anonymous

We read about it in the newspapers. We hear it on the news. We see it on television. Sudden, unexpected death. Caused by accidents, disasters, and disease.

Yet until it strikes close to home, we tend to filter it out through a “can’t happen to us” filter, which keeps uncomfortable news at arms’ length. But closing your eyes and burying your head in the sand like an ostrich is not always a good business strategy!

So, as uncomfortable as it may be, I’m going to talk today about how to disaster-proof your online business.

How Being Inconsistent Can Damage Your Online Brand

How Being Inconsistent Can Damage Your Online Brand | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
The impact of being inconsistent with your online brand, what are the consequences and how you can plan ahead to build momentum and never lose it.

Last April was a crazy month for me. I was in Antigua Guatemala for a week, came back to Los Angeles for 3 days, flew to Santiago Chile for 10 days (that’s a 12-hour flight in case you didn’t know), came back to Los Angeles again for a week to finish rushing to Miami for a couple of days.

But that wasn’t all, I did all this in the middle of clients projects and, except for Guatemala, the rest of the traveling was strictly business (when I say business that includes drinks and cigars in the middle… I didn’t say I was complaining). On top of that, my blog has been experiencing some serious issues that required some special attention. Just so you get an idea, every time I publish a post, the entire site goes down, sometimes it will disconnect from the database or it will go completely blank...

Not Sure What Your Business Should be Doing Online? Follow this Formula!

Not Sure What Your Business Should be Doing Online? Follow this Formula! | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

When it comes to the web and business, perhaps no question is as discussed (and argued) as: “What should my company be doing online?”

Of course, the question can be asked in many different ways. Some common variations include:

- How will being online help me bring customers to my offline location?

- Do I really need a website? How fancy (i.e. expensive) does it need to be, does it have to have a blog and what about that search engine optimization stuff?

- Do I need to get going with that social media stuff? On which social media sites should I be active, what should I say, how often should I say it and to whom should I be talking?

- Can I really manage my business online? How secure is it? Can I do some things and not others? Is it hard to learn how it’s done?

- This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this complex question and unfortunately, there are no simple answers.

Until now...
