How to REALLY make money from a website

How to REALLY make money from a website | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

As much as I tell people to seriously reconsider buying too much into the hardcore “Make Money Online” hype, I can not argue against its allure and the fact that, well, people DO make money online.

The problem is, there are the usual caveats:

- It’s not fast.
- It’s not easy.
- You WILL encounter problems and tough challenges.
- You might not always enjoy it.

These are challenges facing Roman who asked me for a blog critique. He has been building a site all about his experience of creating a website that makes money called “How this website makes money” (how meta). Problem is, while he is getting some pretty OK traffic, it isn’t making him much money...

4 Steps to Selling With Social Media

4 Steps to Selling With Social Media | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Are you wondering why your social media efforts aren’t working?

Social media success sometimes appears arbitrary.

Perhaps you’ve wondered, “Why does company X generate leads and business from their social activity while my company wastes resources on blogs that don’t get read and tweets that go unanswered?”

Social media is so new, sometimes the path to success is unclear and it’s easy to lose your way.

If you want to demystify the experience and improve your ROI (return on investment), you need to make sure that your marketing and campaigns include these four essential components...

Want to Make Money Online? Then Stop Reading and Get Moving! | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post here at problogger.net about how Firepole Marketing makes money.

I explained that even though we’re less than a year old, we’ve already made over $20,000, and that over half of that came from offline sources.

We wanted to know how other bloggers make their money. Is it all online, or do they make their money offline as well?

In other words, we wanted to know if they were Semi-Local.

In October 2011, we surveyed 153 people; 107 who were already Semi-Local, and 46 who aspired to be. We asked a number of questions to find out what was really involved in becoming and being Semi-Local. Here are the highlights of what we learned.

Make Money Locally—and Globally—Through Your Blog

Make Money Locally—and Globally—Through Your Blog | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Our blog is less than a year old.

We started Firepole Marketing less than a year ago, and we’ve done pretty well with it over that time. A lot of people know who we are, and what we do.

I’ve even been dubbed the Freddy Krueger of Blogging.

And while we’re not at the scale of a major site like Copyblogger, we still do pretty well, to the point that we make a decent amount of money online, and occasionally even help others to do the same.

Image copyright Lvnel - Fotolia.com

We aren’t the only ones to have done that, and I remember that a year ago, when I saw others make the same sort of claim, I always wanted more information. I wanted to know how much money they were really making, and where that money was coming from...

19 Ways to Get Paid for Your Writing

19 Ways to Get Paid for Your Writing | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Good writers should get paid for their work. It’s as simple as that.

If this is what you want to do professionally, then you should be paid for it.

A dirty little secret of this business is that many writers that earn a full-time income by putting pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, aren’t any better than the writers who don’t make a dime.

It doesn’t have to be this way.

Let me be clear, you’re not going to find any “get rich quick” ideas in this post. But those writers that earn do have a secret weapon …

They know where to go to get paid...

Making Money Vs Making a Name: Which One Is More Profitable? - Entrepreneurs-Journey.com

Making Money Vs Making a Name: Which One Is More Profitable? - Entrepreneurs-Journey.com | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Every single person in the world has an innate desire to feel important, to matter, to count.

No matter how we look at it, recognition from the outside world plays a tremendous part in how we feel about ourselves.

This desire or even necessity to feel respected carries into almost every nook and cranny of our lives, including our online business.

And this begs a question that’s been haunting me for a while now:

Would you rather be recognized as a true authority in your niche, invited to speak at conferences and give interviews, asked for opinions, etc., but not necessarily see much monetary gain from all this recognition…
OR
being a nobody in the blogging world, but quietly making a nice income from your online business?
Fame or money, in other words?...

It’s Here.

It’s Here. | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

There’s more documentation on ‘how to make money online’ than most subjects out there, yet I can safely say that 99% of people who try to replace their offline income fail to do so. Many of you have seen the case studies of marketers – who clearly already know what they’re doing – building another successful website. Inspiring? Without a doubt. But obviously there’s still something missing.

For a long time I wondered what it would take to fill that gap. What would increase the number of people who follow advice in this space and actually achieve some form of success. Then the answer came to me. Or rather, she did...

6 Tips to Help You Survive Your First 3 Months of Pro Blogging

6 Tips to Help You Survive Your First 3 Months of Pro Blogging | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

I was a high-school Maths teacher for eight years and for all those years, my life evolved in writing lesson plans, producing teaching materials and worksheets, dealing with parents, teaching some well-behaved and some rude students, and pleasing demanding bosses. When an opportunity came for me to finally be a full-time blogger, which allows me to be my own boss and set my own schedule and calendar, it was a dream come true.

Yet, as it turn out, building a website and establishing myself as an authority isn´t all fairy tales.

I was a part-time blogger for two years, juggling my full-time day job, after-school tutorials, and blogging until late midnight every day. My first blogs were built through a free blog platform, on which I learned HTML, SEO techniques, and a little online marketing. I had enough experience and I was quite ready to do blogging full-time before I decided to quit my job...

7-point Checklist For Bloggers Who Want to Create a Profitable Blog

7-point Checklist For Bloggers Who Want to Create a Profitable Blog | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Before I aggressively started to build my Motivational Memo blog at the beginning of this year I had already owned a web design company for over seven years.

During that time I have seen the good, the bad and the ugly in web design, and now that I have entered the blogging industry I continue to see the same mistakes being made by many bloggers.

So use this quick checklist to analyze your own blog.
1. How well is your blog structured?

- Have you clearly identified your audience?
- What’s in it for the client when they come to your blog?
- Do you have a call to action?
- Is your blog outstanding? What do you do differently from others?...

Either way, your blog takes real time, and it might be nice to make a little money from it. Google AdSense has enabled bloggers around the world to get ad revenue from their content. The Tumblr Terms of Service require that your blog be used primarily for blogging, but they do allow you to use AdSense or other ad systems as long as that’s not the primary focus of your site...

Franki and I run a Blogger Boot Camp, and we've held several dozen personalized classes training all kinds of folks the ins and outs of blogging and social media. What I have taken away from those classes?

  1. Select your Clients Carefully.
  2. Look for basic internet skills.

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a framework for measuring the impact of your social media efforts?

That’s where Susan Etlinger’s new research for the Altimeter Group comes into play. Susan did qualitative research with 60 social media marketers and vendors to understand how businesses currently measure their social media performance.

Her goal: to develop a framework for tying social media performance to business goals.

Position Yourself For Success While Working Your Current Job

Position Yourself For Success While Working Your Current Job | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

If you’re like me you can’t get into a conversation without mentioning your brand, or the importance of building and maintaining it. Sadly, these conversations aren’t only with entrepreneurs, so I get plenty of eyes that start to glaze over when I bring up the topic. It’s hard to explain to people that building and maintaining your personal brand isn’t just a skill that needs to be mastered by entrepreneurs. Even if you never plan on leaving your current job, increasing your profile often leads to promotions and bigger money. More likely though (you are reading Personal Branding Blog, right?) you plan on leaving your job at some point, if you haven’t already, and you’ll make for a much easier transition if you do a few simple things to build your brand before leaving...

20 Ways to Make More Money from Your Blog

20 Ways to Make More Money from Your Blog | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

A few weeks ago, on the ProBlogger Community Boards, I started a new forum topic titled, “Help Me Monetize 1,000 Visitors Per Day.”

My natural health blog had experienced some rapid traffic growth, and had grown from 80 visitors per day to over 1,000 visitors per day using these seven strategies.

Yet my income was pitiful.

My only monetization strategy was linking to relevant Amazon products, and I was generating just over $100 per month. I worked out that if I carried on like this, simply promoting Amazon products, I’d need to be clocking 50,000 visitors per dayto make a comfortable, full-time income with this blog...

How to Create a Million-Dollar Business This Weekend (Examples: AppSumo, Mint, Chihuahuas) | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
Noah Kagan built two multi-million dollar online businesses before turning 28. He also looks great in orange.

I first met Noah Kagan over rain and strong espressos at Red Rock Coffee in Mountain View, CA. It was 2007. We were both in hoodies, had a shared penchant for the F-bomb and burritos, all of which led to a caffeine-infused mindmeld.

It would be the first of many.

The matchmaker then introducing us was the prophetic and profane Dave McClure, General Partner of 500 Start-ups, which is now headquartered just down the street from Red Rock.

Mr. Noah has quite the start-up resume.

He was employee #30 at Facebook, #4 at Mint, had previously worked for Intel (where he frequently took naps under his desk), and had turned down a six-figure offer from Yahoo. Since we first met, Noah’s helped create Gambit, an online gaming payment platform and a multi-million dollar business; and AppSumo, loved by entrepreneurs and moms everywhere. He also helped pour fire on both the 4-Hour Workweek and 4-Hour Body launches...
