Today, Google announced the rollout of its Knowledge Graph, which will cause a big change to how results are delivered in the SERPs. Basically, the intent behind the Knowledge Graph is for search engines to think more like a human -- and deliver results that reflect that. It's gradually rolling out in the U.S. as we speak, but you might not see it for yourself quite yet. After the initial rollout is complete, Google will expand the Knowledge Graph to searches on mobile and tablet devices, then to languages other than English.


As Google puts it, Knowledge Graph, "taps into the collective intelligence of the web and understands the world a bit more like people do." Wait. What exactly does that mean? Let's take a deeper look at this rollout, and try to make things a little clearer!

Google’s new suite of Social reports within their Analytics platform launches tomorrow. Among the new features, users can compare last-click to assisted conversions, see Social Visitors Flow, view select social streams in Analytics, and more.


The Google Analytics team has just announced a new set of reports to help marketers more accurately measure the actual value of social media. Speaking at SES New York this morning, Google shared the news of the immediate, incremental launch of their new Social Reports.


In an interview with Search Engine Watch, Group Product Manager Phil Mui explained how the new Google Analytics social reports allow marketers to measure both the last-click and the “assisted” upper-funnel value of social.

I saw an article like this from Christopher Penn over the summer, he uses his iPad and flipboard to do this. I'm using buffer and find one of my best Twitter tools - if I can discipline my self to use it. The Chrome plugin helps a lot. But one of the things I've noticed is that I don't systemmatically read blogs as much as I did a few years back. Now, I look for particular Twitter lists, honed keywords, and specific sources. I need to get my discipline back around this ...

Intro: Reading is changing, even more than e-readers, tablets, or “readers’ tablets,” smartphones are changing it.

 

**It’s a mix of what’s going on in the world and what’s going on in your world, fused together. 

 

Here's what caught my attention: I'm looking at this from a content curator's point of view: **The flurry of activity around personalized news for smartphones shows that as popular as the iPad has been, and as popular as smaller Android-based devices like the Kindle Fire or Nook Tablet might become,

 

the sheer number of users on mobile phones are impossible to ignore.

 

****It also shows that customers are demanding the ability to sync and read their content across as many devices as possible.

 

Finally, the subtle differences in UI and app design show that developers aren’t just thinking about building for different screen sizes, ****but around a whole range of factors that affect how, where, what and when we read.

 

For the new mobile reading, context becomes a cluster of these factors.

 

Flipboard’s Mike McCue highlights a few of these in an interview with the Los Angeles Times‘ David Sarno: "It’s a mix of what’s going on in the world and what’s going on in your world, fused together. And it might seem weird that I’m looking at a picture of my daughters, and then the next flip I’m reading a story about Iran. But to me as a reader, when I’m standing in line waiting to get my coffee, those things are what I care about."

One of the best ways to plan for online success in the coming year is too look back at many of the algorithm changes that Google has made and the effects they will have on blogging in 2012. This year has seen well over 500 algorithm modifications, primarily coming from the Panda and Freshness updates. During this period of time, Matt Cutts and fellow Google folk did their best to help a lot of webmasters understand the implications of the various patches and updates that they have uploaded.

 

But quite frankly, many small internet marketers and niche websites got hit pretty badly. After Google’s Panda updates were first applied, many bloggers lost thousands of visitors per month and often dropped out of first page results that had netted them steady organic traffic. This is not something you want to be caught up in again, so make sure your blog is getting the time and effort it needs to boast user worthy content and see increased traffic from Google next year.
