Sigrid, in my opinion, the best plan is to sell yourself on social media. Trust is the most important in this world and if your company name is not Nike or something like that, your name is definitely the best plan to create confidence.

Social Media doesn't work for the vast majority of small businesses.

That was the main message in the USA Today article titled, Study: Social media a bust for small businesses, published on April 17th, 2013. From the news item:"About 61% of small businesses don't see any return on investment on their social-media activities, according to a survey released Tuesday from Manta, a social network for small businesses. Yet, almost 50% say they've increased their time spent on social media, and only 7% have decreased their time. What businesses are trying to get out of social media: 36% said their goal was to acquire and engage new customers, 19% said to gain leads and referrals, and 17% said to boost awareness. Facebook was most cited as the hardest to maintain social-media platform, according to the survey." There is a big lesson in this data...

 

What you want from social media may be very different from what it is.

Yes that's it : "Don't kid yourself, social media works. In fact, all media works... you just have to do the hard work of figuring out how to make it work for you. There are no silver bullets."

I don’t think there is any other aspect of online reputation for companies and individuals, as undervalued and taken lightly, as the giving and managing of recommendations. While it remains true that (in a positive sense) recommendations can be the pat on the back we need to get that coveted job, improve our influence and relevance, and many other side benefits, it is also the case that recommending or asking for recommendations without exercising good judgement can provoke a boomerang effect that can damage us by undermining (sometimes irretrievably) our credibility and hurting our online and offline presence in various other ways. Was it a surprise last week when Presidential wannabe Newt Gingrich was (allegedly) busted for having 1.3 million followers on Twitter, most of which were bots and fake accounts? Not really. It may have raised an eyebrow that someone applying for the most important job in the world would (allegedly) stoop to fakery to boost follower counts. But despite some initial reluctance, politics has embraced the social media Egosystem as much or more than any other industry.

I have noticed that when the topic of social network is raised, it usually turns to a discussion of Facebook. Granted it is the biggest player on the planet however it is not the only one.

 

Ok, at some point in the discussion it may get to Linkedin, Google Plus and Twitter (which by the way is a microblog not a network but it is so widely used it surfaces regardless of what topic is being discussed). The reality is, although these are the “Big Four”, there are so many to choose from and depending on “your fancy” or strategy you may want to develop a presence at other networks as a starting point.

 

Now that I have planted this seed in your thinking, where do you start? There are so many out there – really. So whatever your passion, go and find your network. If it doesn’t exist, hey create one!

How do you find the time for social media? This is the question I get asked probably more than any other.

 

I have four lovely children, a demanding job, a wife with a successful career and more. So how do I find the time to tweet, blog, share, and comment?

 

The answer is simple: I make the time for social media because I think it’s important.

 

I believe that business people in general, and marketers especially, have an obligation to do more than just consume content or share other people’s content, but to become a content creator and to contribute to your work and your life.

This sentence says all: “In order to find the time for social media, you need to see why it’s important, how it will change your life, how it will improve your business.”

 

Everyone who wants to be successful in the social media area should forget excuses like: “I have not enough time”, “I have nothing to say” (how it is possible, for a business person, to have nothing to say?), “I don’t know how this tools works” etc!

 

If you have not enough time: "According to The Atlantic, we spend more than a quarter (28%) of our day answering email!", maybe, you can invest a little less time, in this activity.

 

Finally, you have the choice, do it, or not, but don't search excuses!

I think its fair to stay that at the beginning of your social media journey it can be very time consuming getting to grips with the different platforms and building up followers and looking for decent content to share. You also have to develop your style. That said, with the right tools and mindset your time investment lessens substantially - unless you get hooked!

What’s Game Good For?


Before we can talk about applying game mechanics to anything, we need to understand what a game actually us. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a game as “a form or spell of play or sport, esp. a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength or luck.”


That’s pretty hard to digest as a something you can say to a decision maker! However, if we break it down further we can start to get at some core ideas that should help. Play and sport are all activities or tasks. Played is not a strong word in the corporate world. It conjures images of nerds playing quake after hours on the corporate network. So instead, how about we use completed.


Rules Can Be Starting Points

Next, rules. We all have rules, but it is not something you hear people talking about in businesses. Instead, we could say parameters or guidelines. All projects have parameters or guidelines...
