5 Things I've Learned From Training Corporate Bloggers | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

This is a modified post posted from my October 2007 archives. Very little of it has changed, despite the growth of social media. That's a point of pride for me. Tactics and platforms come and go, but good strategies always work.

Franki and I run a Blogger Boot Camp, and we've held several dozen personalized classes training all kinds of folks the ins and outs of blogging and social media. What I have taken away from those classes?

  1. Select your Clients Carefully.
  2. Look for basic internet skills.
  3. Always charge full price.
  4. Respect your client.
  5. No one fails at blogging until they give up...

While Facebook and Google Plus social continue to push new features live, battling themselves over who can dominate the market, Twitter remains the most powerful driver of traffic to my site.

Ever since the t.co shortener was introduced, I can see it showing up at the top of my referrers at any given day.

This is very powerful and also quite reassuring. Continuing to improve and work on my Twitter performance has paid off greatly so far.

Getting Mass Traffic from StumbleUpon: A Definitive Guide

Getting Mass Traffic from StumbleUpon: A Definitive Guide | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
Many bloggers end up having a love-hate relationship with StumbleUpon. They love the amount of traffic that the service – which now boasts over 10 million members – can send, but they hate the conversion rate on that traffic. ViperChill received 12,040 visitors from StumbleUpon in May, yet their average time on site was just 26 seconds (overall site average is 2 minutes and 24 seconds) and they each viewed around 1.22 pages.

Simply put, compared to other traffic sources, StumbleUpon is terrible. However, because the service sends so much traffic, even leveraging just a small percentage can see a decent increase in your comment count and subscriber numbers. Today I’m going to give an in-depth guide to the service and then give my tactics for getting the most out of it...

Conversation Agent: 34 Ways to Spread Your Ideas with a Blog

Conversation Agent: 34 Ways to Spread Your Ideas with a Blog | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

When you think about it, social media is like sharecropping -- you help build a network with your content and it uses it however they see fit. What happens if they delete your account or the network changes its terms and conditions?

It could be an unintentional glitch -- and now your data is gone. Both Flickr and Facebook have given us examples in the last couple of years. The effects of those actions have been devastating for the people who had put time and care into building a presence in social networks with their content.

Which is why I have been and continue to be strongly in favor of using a blog as a base to spread your ideas.

Starting a blog shows commitment to a topic, industry, group, project, brand, etc. It establishes you as someone who can stick with a regular appointment, and has something to say, teach, and learn. There are many more benefits...

When I was only 14 years of age I was handed a set of lyrics from an adult friend demanding that I should add a melody to bring the words to life musically. I’d never written a song in my life, but his belief in me allowed me to produce my first masterpiece.

This then led to hundreds of original lyrics over the next ten years that culminated in a number of professional recordings.

I learned the power of concise

The habit of writing lyrics for songs sharpened my talents for writing concisely about the subject matter of each song.

The last time I used the phrase "social influence" in a face-to-face conversation at a business luncheon for small businesses, one of the owners sighed:

Want to Make Money Online? Then Stop Reading and Get Moving! | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

A few weeks ago, I wrote a post here at problogger.net about how Firepole Marketing makes money.

I explained that even though we’re less than a year old, we’ve already made over $20,000, and that over half of that came from offline sources.

We wanted to know how other bloggers make their money. Is it all online, or do they make their money offline as well?

In other words, we wanted to know if they were Semi-Local.

In October 2011, we surveyed 153 people; 107 who were already Semi-Local, and 46 who aspired to be. We asked a number of questions to find out what was really involved in becoming and being Semi-Local. Here are the highlights of what we learned.
