Social Media is a Waste of Time

Social Media is a Waste of Time | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
But an online marketing expert explains how you can make Facebook, Twitter, and Groupon, among others, work for your small business.

If you are like most small businesses, you and your team are stretched thin. If you even have a team. All day long you are servicing customers, delivering products, managing finances and doing whatever it takes to keep your business up and running. The last thing you need is to waste time. But for many small businesses, that’s exactly what they are doing when it comes to marketing with social media.

The typical small business Facebook page is a ghost town. It might have some pictures of the business, a few posts about an event six months ago, and a handful of followers who joined when the page launched. On Twitter, there might be a couple posts a month and none of them are related to any customer question. The same is true for Foursquare. Groupon is like going to the casino: there’s a good chance you’ll come home with empty pockets...

Branding Is About Creating Patterns, Not Repeating Messages

Branding Is About Creating Patterns, Not Repeating Messages | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

In the latest Method 10x10 piece, principal Marc Shillum argues that branding lies in creating patterns that add up to a whole, rather than a single, monolithic message.

Brands today exist in multiple mediums, defined by multiple voices. The media brands inhabit is iterative, with no beginning, no end, and little permanency. In that context, adherence to a big idea and endless repetition of centralized, fixed rules can make a brand seem unresponsive and out of step with its audience. But without repetition, how does a brand create consistency? And without consistency, how does a brand maintain value?

Brands as Patterns

We all know that brands are increasingly accessed digitally, but a less considered consequence is that the interface through which a brand is accessed has become a primary identity element...

Writing Effective Facebook Posts

Writing Effective Facebook Posts | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

What you see in your Facebook newsfeed isn’t magic; it’s controlled by a very important algorithm called EdgeRank. Facebook wants users to be engaged, so EdgeRank is a critical aspect of their business. The EdgeRank factors are:

-Affinity – How often you interact with others (be it visiting a friend’s profile or commenting on a page’s picture).

-Edge Weight – The type of content it is. A few types are: Photos, Videos, Status, Place Checkins, becoming friends with someone, liking a page, changing your profile picture, etc. Keep in mind, there are general rules, but everyone’s Edge Weight is different and Facebook has carte blanche to tweak things at will.
-Recency – The older something is, the less likely you are to see it.

If Social Media Were A Stock, How Much Would You Invest?

If Social Media Were A Stock, How Much Would You Invest? | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

A couple of weeks ago I attended a conference for e-commerce executives. There were two keynotes that blew me away. For opposite reasons.

The first was by Ray Kurzweil, the inventor and futurist, who spoke about the exponential growth of technology, science and medicine. Showing several graphs indicating year-over-year growth in the triple digits, he demonstrated how the world does not only seem to be changing faster than we remember in these areas — it is. As a result, a few years in the future, technology will change in ways that are beyond (most of) our imaginations. The trajectory of social media is even steeper than most of the changes that Kurzweil demonstration.

The other keynote was by the CEO of a multi-billion dollar multi-channel retailer who said he’s not investing in social media because he doesn’t want to lose focus on e-commerce and the bottom line. He said, “Until you can show me the value of a Facebook like, I’m not investing.” His comments were tweeted and echoed by people throughout the conference...

What Bestselling Fiction Can Teach You About Writing Better Landing Pages | Copyblogger

What Bestselling Fiction Can Teach You About Writing Better Landing Pages | Copyblogger | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Imagine you’re having a discussion with a talkative, hyperactive teenager.

The conversation goes something like this …

We went to the mall, and like, there was this fire in the mall. And we went from there to the movies, but we didn’t have any money and anyway the popcorn machine was broken, and so we didn’t really want to go to the movies without popcorn. But right after that we went to have some pizza and there was this creepy guy outside the store. But listen to this — because that’s not the best part. The best part is that Sylvie dumped Josh, and like, they ran into each other in the street …

Annoying right? Then why do we so often write our web copy just like that teenager talks?

Is there a better way to write a landing page?...

6 Tips to Help You Survive Your First 3 Months of Pro Blogging

6 Tips to Help You Survive Your First 3 Months of Pro Blogging | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

I was a high-school Maths teacher for eight years and for all those years, my life evolved in writing lesson plans, producing teaching materials and worksheets, dealing with parents, teaching some well-behaved and some rude students, and pleasing demanding bosses. When an opportunity came for me to finally be a full-time blogger, which allows me to be my own boss and set my own schedule and calendar, it was a dream come true.

Yet, as it turn out, building a website and establishing myself as an authority isn´t all fairy tales.

I was a part-time blogger for two years, juggling my full-time day job, after-school tutorials, and blogging until late midnight every day. My first blogs were built through a free blog platform, on which I learned HTML, SEO techniques, and a little online marketing. I had enough experience and I was quite ready to do blogging full-time before I decided to quit my job...

Does Facebook Fan-Gating Hurt Facebook Engagement?

Does Facebook Fan-Gating Hurt Facebook Engagement? | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Fan-gating or Like-gating is the practice of displaying certain content only to users who Like your Facebook page.

It’s an increasingly common practice and something I discuss with clients almost daily. But is it a good idea?

What is Fan-Gating?
Fan-gating is accomplished by creating two versions of a tab on your page—one that’s shown to users who already Like your page and one to those who have not Liked the page.

The non-fans are encouraged to Like in order to “unlock” the content behind the tab. Because information about whether a user has Liked your page is easily accessible through Facebook’s Graph API, it is relatively easy to implement a gate, or “reveal tab” as it is sometimes called. There are many companies that provide tools to do this and a list of some of them can be found here...

10 Essential Social Media Tips for Ecommerce Sites

10 Essential Social Media Tips for Ecommerce Sites | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Social media is impacting how we do business online in new and exciting ways. Customers are sharing more and more data about what they’re doing online and the things they like. Getting people to share your products on social networks is a great way to bring in traffic and find new customers.

But ecommerce sites are stuck in a hard place because the number one goal of an ecommerce site isn’t sharing, it’s selling.

Take the “King” of ecommerce sites, Amazon.com, as an example. They have sharing tools on their product pages, but it’s not quite what you’d think:

While the sharing links are above the fold, they’re in the bottom-right corner of the screen. And you can bet that Amazon has tested that spot and found that it’s the best place for those links...

Principles of Effective Blog Design

Principles of Effective Blog Design | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

People judge books by the cover, and other people by their looks.

Take a look at these two men:

Now answer these questions (you can’t choose “neither”):
- Which one would you rather ask investment advice from?
- Which one would you rather have babysit your children?
- Which one would you rather have cook your dinner?

… and so on. You don’t know anything about these men. Yet you make assumptions and can even take decisions based on their looks.

What does that have to do with your blog? Everything!

“As aesthetically orientated humans, we’re psychologically hardwired to trust beautiful people, and the same goes for websites. Our offline behaviour and inclinations translate to our online existence.”—Dr. Brent Coker...

99 Ways to Build Links by Giving Stuff Away (and Improve Your Brand Too)

99 Ways to Build Links by Giving Stuff Away (and Improve Your Brand Too) | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

In my last post I explained why free stuff is link building gold, and in this update I'm giving you 99 actionable ways to gain links by giving stuff away. By the end you'll have a ton of link building ideas, some of which I hope will be new to you. This is a springboard for new ideas, so I hope this 99 can become many more, so please leave your comments and help grow this list.

These ideas come from methods I've seen customers use to get free stuff in researching the Free Stuff Everyday book, and also ideas we've used for clients at Koozai. In short there's nothing below that can't be sourced to the real world, so please give every idea a chance.

These ideas focus on getting increased chatter about your brand online, with the logic that when people are talking about your brand they are likely linking to it as well. If you find there is a lot of brand chatter without any links, you can always use brand monitoring tools to track your mentions, and then followup to ask for a link...
