Is Social Media Strategy Required or Redundant | social media strategy | Social Media Consulting - Convince & Convert | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

An "encounter" between Jay Baer and Guy Kawasaki ... really interesting and it gives to reflect on the social media world. [note mg]

Is Social media strategy required for all business? Or can you just get started? Jay Baer examines social media strategy and provides a social media ROI lesson.

I don’t have a problem with Guy Kawasaki. I enjoy his books. His track record in business is substantial. We have friends in common. But on the subject of social media strategy, we disagree in every possible way.

Last month, Guy was interviewed (that happens a lot) in Inc. Magazine about social media, as was asked whether entrepreneurs should hire a consultant and develop a social media strategy. (edit: for clarity, this is the exact question he was asked: “Let’s say an entrepreneur is new to the whole social media thing. There’s a tendency to hire a consultant and formulate a plan. Is that the right approach?”) To which he replied:...

This is the quesiton who is on the lips of anyone active in social media, "what is the ROI of social media" Google and its new tools can be an additional response. [note mg]

Google’s new suite of Social reports within their Analytics platform launches tomorrow. Among the new features, users can compare last-click to assisted conversions, see Social Visitors Flow, view select social streams in Analytics, and more.

The Google Analytics team has just announced a new set of reports to help marketers more accurately measure the actual value of social media. Speaking at SES New York this morning, Google shared the news of the immediate, incremental launch of their new Social Reports.

52 Questions To Ask When Hiring A Social Media Company

52 Questions To Ask When Hiring A Social Media Company | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

As a specialist in social media you should be able to answer these 52 questions ... and if you are looking for a company that will take care of your social media, you should ask them... there's a lot of work ahead! [note mg]

Confession time: I have a really hard time getting started. There’s just something about those awkward first steps that makes me delay projects as long as I possibly can. For example, last month I finally fixed the check engine light in my car so that I could get it inspected. It was actually pretty excited since the light had been on since October.

Of 2008. I wish I was kidding.

It’s not that I’m irresponsible, that I don’t value my safety or even that I didn’t know I was potentially creating a bigger problem – it’s that taking the first step and committing to something is scary. And it’s especially scary if you don’t know where to start. Because the not knowing makes you feel dumb. And no one likes to feel dumb.

Without The Right Message, Twitter Is No Better For Your Brand Than A Fax Machine

Without The Right Message, Twitter Is No Better For Your Brand Than A Fax Machine | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

A great lesson in humility... I think this article touches the major problem of social media, too much blah blah and personal promotion and not enough real useful information for all. It's to each of us to finding the right ratio between the two... I have an idea about that, and you? [note mg]

Why brands have this endless fascination with social media is one of the more fascinating phenomena in business today--especially since many are missing the one key ingredient that, if ignored, will turn their most choreographed efforts into social media hell.

When it comes to branding and the ever-changing social media phenomenon, you’re not a mushroom. In other words, you shouldn’t be kept in the dark and fed a pile of...well, you get the idea.

Every once in while, a certain business mania surfaces. As you saw in the video above, history is filled with these blips: The telephone. Radio. TV. The fax machine. The Internet. And now social media. Within social media, it splinters further--it seems like there’s always a shiny new network. Before Pinterest, there was Google Plus. Before Google Plus, well, you know the drill. And on and on.

What happened to all the railroads? Have you ever pondered that question?

In the 1800s, the railroad industry in the U.S. was booming. New businesses were sprouting up every year, and inventors were creating newer and more efficient locomotives. First it was steam, then it was petrol, then it was diesel. Times were good, and America had a bright, rail-based future.

So what happened? Why isn’t the country blanketed in rail routes and why doesn’t everyone hop on the metro-line in front of their house each day to go to work? Today, the railroad companies are a shell of what they once were. Why? Because the automobile came along and ran them into the ground.

But did this have to happen?

No. There were things railroad companies could have done to cater to the people who made their businesses possible, but instead they dug in their heels and said, “We’re in the railroad business,” and they stayed the course.

Random Act of Marketing RAMs Attempt to drive business benefit that is NOT integrated, easily measured, nor integrated with other marketing tactics.

There you sit in the executive conference room watching everyone nod their heads about the latest idea from the new executive on the block. The sad thing is nobody in the conference room has the guts to state the obvious… that there is no budget, time, or resources to implement the new random act of marketing or social media with any level of success.

Think of your favorite brand, and the first thing to come to mind is likely a logo, such as the Coca-Cola scripting, a tag-line, such as Nike’s “Just do it,” or a jingle – remember the Oscar Meyer Wiener song? These may be the aspects of a brand you remember, but they are no longer the most important aspects of branding today. Identity, persona, essence and promise, are the new kings and queens of the branding kingdom, thanks to technology and the deeper connections it opens up between brands and consumers.

Markets, consumer behavior and how businesses connect with customers are all directly impacted by technology. Looking at the rapid erosion of Blockbuster’s business model, it’s clear to see the impact that technology can have on consumer behavior. During Blockbuster’s initial bankruptcy filing, CNBC’s The Faber Report summarized it this way, “At the end of the day, this is one of those bankruptcies that’s not really about a financial situation as much as it’s about seminal changes in how people ultimately watch video.”
