It’s funny how clients’ needs evolve over time. For example, I’ve been noticing that most clients who come to Outspoken Media seeking blog consulting services these days aren’t asking whether or not they should take the plunge and create a corporate blog. In 2012, they’ve already got that.


Now what they’re looking to do is get more from that blog. They’re looking to hire a social media agency to help them increase engagement, usability and the overall function of their blog. I’m lucky that many of these audits and strategy documents fall on my plate, which means I get to look at awesome blogs and make them even more awesome. Who wouldn’t love that?

While some users are happy with the social media buttons that come built into their design template, the majority of WordPress users install a plugin to automatically embed sharing links on their pages. Many of you will find that a plugin does exactly what you need; others not so much. Some are poorly coded, and most include services that you just don’t need. And while some great social media plugins are out there, they don’t integrate with every WordPress design.


If you aren’t comfortable editing your WordPress templates, a plugin is probably the best solution. If you are comfortable making a few edits to your theme, then consider manually integrating social media so that you have more control over what services appear on your website.

There are many affordable options available to purchase stock photography. This may be a blessing or a curse. Affordability often comes at the cost of originality.


It’s important to consider your ideals and the image’s ability to illustrate a concept perfectly. But consider originality as well. You wouldn’t want to fall into the trap of using cliche imagery because it’s easy and convenient.

The 80/20 Value of Titles


Recently, Rand did one of the best Whiteboard Fridays I've seen in a while (I do watch all of them) about increasing the likelihood of your content going viral. He touches briefly upon the importance of your title for click through rate and sharability, but in this post I'd like to take a more in depth look at titles and how they help spread your content. (By the way, this is my first YouMoz - woohoo!)


In my opinion, the elements of writing click worthy titles deserve more attention. In the wonderful marketing book "Made To Stick", the Heath brothers note that any good news or editorial writer may spend 80% of their time crafting the title (or "lead") and then whatever time they have left on the body of the content.


For those familiar with 80/20, what this means is, the size of the title compared to the actual content (and time spent crafting it) disproportionately affects the success of that content. It's one small piece of text with a lot power!

I saw an article like this from Christopher Penn over the summer, he uses his iPad and flipboard to do this. I'm using buffer and find one of my best Twitter tools - if I can discipline my self to use it. The Chrome plugin helps a lot. But one of the things I've noticed is that I don't systemmatically read blogs as much as I did a few years back. Now, I look for particular Twitter lists, honed keywords, and specific sources. I need to get my discipline back around this ...

What’s Game Good For?


Before we can talk about applying game mechanics to anything, we need to understand what a game actually us. The Oxford English Dictionary defines a game as “a form or spell of play or sport, esp. a competitive one played according to rules and decided by skill, strength or luck.”


That’s pretty hard to digest as a something you can say to a decision maker! However, if we break it down further we can start to get at some core ideas that should help. Play and sport are all activities or tasks. Played is not a strong word in the corporate world. It conjures images of nerds playing quake after hours on the corporate network. So instead, how about we use completed.

Next, rules. We all have rules, but it is not something you hear people talking about in businesses. Instead, we could say parameters or guidelines. All projects have parameters or guidelines...

Hey there! My name’s Ryan and I am another new member to the SEER team. I’ve learned so much since starting at SEER but I thought for my first blog post I would cover something I have some background in, WordPress.


I am helping to set up SEER’s upcoming blog on SEO for college students and I thought I would share the checklist I go through every time I start a new site on WordPress. If anyone’s New Years resolution was to finally start blogging then hopefully this post will give you a few ideas and tips or possibly save you a headache down the road.


The great thing about WordPress is that it really does simplify every step of creating and running a site. I was in a meeting with SEER’s developer Chris Le and half the time I thought he was speaking a foreign language when talking about advanced site design. I know some coding basics but thanks to WordPress and the plug-ins and themes created around it I’ve built more than a dozen sites ranging from your basic blog all the way to e-commerce and password protected membership sites.
