Yes Martin. I am not in love with the scrolling up to discover new things but maybe I'll get used to it. What do you say on that one?
Martin Gysler's comment, February 6, 3:41 PM
Hi Robin, Yes, I understand and I think you're right not to test all the new tools, it is a lot of work and it is not always worth the trouble. What I can say after a few tests, is that the tool is slow and I do not really understand how it could be interesting for me. Finally, I think we can do the same thing with Twitterfall in a more simple and faster. But perhaps I have not yet understood what this tool can do.

How to Setup a Wordpress Blog in 5 Minutes

How to Setup a Wordpress Blog in 5 Minutes | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

I started my blog using WordPress and I have found it a platform that makes it easy to own and publish your own content online.

It is the foundation to the success of this blog which currently receives over 300,000 hits per month.

If you’re looking for an easy way to create a web presence and start sharing your ideas online, the best way to do this is to create a blog. Millions of users around the world already express themselves and share their thoughts by means of their personal blogs.

The advantage of having your own WordPress blog that is self-hosted is that you own it.

It is good to have a Facebook “page” or a Tumblr blog but they are owned by someone else and you can have a web presence there but under their “Terms and Conditions” It is basically a rental.

Does everybody need a social media strategy?

Does everybody need a social media strategy? | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

As the hype of social media begins to die down and companies re-evaluate their efforts with a steely-eyed look at the cost versus benefits, I think it is time to re-visit this important question: Does every company really need a social media marketing plan?

This is a very complex question. So to help answer it, I looked at a few companies with brands that might not be natural fits for a social media presence. Adult diapers. Coal. Hazardous waste clean-up. Playing cards.

Let’s explore this important question by taking a romp through some unusual case studies that stretch the boundaries of social media marketing thinking.

Martin Gysler's insight:

Through this six different companies we can learn a lot about social media strategy and if everybody needs a social media strategy.

In my sense, social media is a great place to keep in touch with his customers and prospects and give another dimension in life. We can also do it in a small frame.

What is your feeling?

Facebook rolling out option for fans to receive notifications about page posts

Facebook rolling out option for fans to receive notifications about page posts | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Facebook’s algorithms are sometimes a problem for fan pages who publish only a few posts. The problem is that they don’t appear in the stream of their fans. With this new feature, that could change, if the fan... activates this new option. Interesting! [note Martin Gysler]

Facebook is rolling out a new feature for users to opt in to receive notifications every time a page makes a post.

This seems to be a solution for fans who don’t want to miss any page posts that might not make it into their News Feed because of Facebook’s algorithms. For example, some users might want to be aware of all posts from a news publication, an artist they really like or a small business that doesn’t post very often. The feature is similar to the “close friends” option, which alerts users each time a new update or photo is shared by someone on the list.

Triberr’s Mantra

Triberr’s mantra (or mission statement, if you went to business school :-p ) is to help bloggers be succesful.

And to bloggers, “successful” means three things:

  • Content distribution
  • Content generation
  • Engagement

1. Content Distribution

This is where Triberr began.

Triberr enables bloggers to form tribes and effectively establish a long-term Tear 1 supporter networks.

Since everyone on Triberr is a blogger -and therefore audience builder- each share is worth much more than a share by your average Joe Facebook user. Gross generalization of course, but accurate for our purposes.

How to Back Up and Move a WordPress Blog

But transferring a site is a fairly straightforward process that you can do yourself with an FTP program and this step-by-step guide.

Before trying the DIY method, it’s worth checking to see whether your new hosting company offers a site transfer service for new customers. Many do—but check whether there’s a cost involved. I’ve seen free services for this, but I’ve also seen prices around $300!

If you just need to learn how to make a simple backup of your posts, and don’t need to move hosts, take a look at this ProBlogger post.

Did you know there is a lot of work that has to happen before one begins creating a content marketing strategy? There is and I am going to give you some strategies that will help you begin and also explain some important “non-negotiables”, as I call them.

First, Create a Team

Your business will need at the least a team of two people. This is especially true when your are writing/rewriting the content for the main pages of a website. They need to work together to create the content you need. There should be brainstorming and as they say, two brains are better than one. Seriously, this task is a two person job at a minimum.

There is Work to Be Done Before Your Team Begins:

There are no short cuts for effective and organized content marketing. The non-negotiables below have to be completed before writing begins. They apply to the writing of main content pages of a website and all other forms of content marketing.

How to clear your Facebook search history

Can you lose your Facebook Page because you didn't follow the rules? Facebook would never shut down a Page because they ran a contest and did something like... oh, I don't know, maybe offer to donate a dollar to charity for every Like their Page gets... right?

I'm constantly seeing people saying they've never heard of a Page being shut down for violating a rule and that Facebook doesn't enforce most of them anyway. Well, here are two examples of some popular Pages that were shut down by Facebook for some seemingly innocent contest rule violations. Think it's okay to do it just because you see the big dogs doing it? Think again.

Google Declares War on the Password | Wired Enterprise | Wired.com | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Want an easier way to log into your Gmail account? How about a quick tap on your computer with the ring on your finger?

This may be closer than you think. Google’s security team outlines this sort of ring-finger authentication in a new research paper, set to be published late this month in the engineering journal IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine. In it, Google Vice President of Security Eric Grosse and Engineer Mayank Upadhyay outline all sorts of ways they think people could wind up logging into websites in the future — and it’s about time.

2012 may have been the year that the password broke. It seemed like everyone on the internet received spam e-mail or desperate pleas for cash — the so-called “Mugged in London” scam — from the e-mail accounts of people who had been hacked. And Wired’s own Mat Honan showed everyone just how damaging a hack can be.

Martin Gysler's insight:

A really interesting idea.

What is your opinion ?

Matmi's curator insight, January 22, 6:12 AM

Interesting to think that we could one day be using the rings on our fingers or our smartphones instead of passwords to access our emails . I think this probably makes us more vulnerable to hacking, phones/rings are very easy to loose - What are do you think ? Would you prefer it this way or the traditional password way ? - HK

Will FB Graph Search necessitate a “Love” button?

Will FB Graph Search necessitate a “Love” button? | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

One of the most unwieldly features of Facebook has always been the search function.

After all there is a lot of information to sift through.

There are already more than a billion people, more than 240 billion photos and more than a trillion connections.

How do I find that thread I was talking on last week? Where are my friends recommend that I travel to if I go to Australia. What events are on in Tokyo this weekend? This kind of thing and more.

I just signed up for the beta of the Facebook Graph Search.

The objects we will find will be determined by “likes”. This may mean that many will become more circumspect with what they click like on. Instead of using it as a networking tool to let others know that you have seen their content. Maybe Facebook now needs a love button?

cooala - Play, Discover, Benefit

cooala - Play, Discover, Benefit | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

An app for consumers to playfully connect with brands. In a thrustworthy and straight forward way.

Martin Gysler's insight:

Mobile App for Brand Lovers

cooala is a mobile App for playful and controlled interaction between brands and their fans - an answer to Facebook from the year 2012.

Why cooala?

Young consumers are not easily reached through advertising. Even on social platforms like Facebook, they have little interest in connecting with brands. According to a Forrester Study from 2012, only 6 percent do so the in the USA. Companies are complaining about narrow reach and high advertising budgets on the Zuckerberg platform, users are unsure about their private data and are annoyed by the massive increase in advertising on their Wall. This is exactly where cooala steps in: cooala users discover brands, subscribe to specific content, and benefit from exclusive content and offers from their favorite brands. All while keeping full control of their data.

For the user: Very playful

„What’s cooler?“ is the key question: Gaga or Bieber? FC Bayern Munich or Real Madrid? DC or Quicksilver? Ferrari or Mini? In different product categories, Fans choose their favorite from a suggested pair and thus build their Brand Map. New, cool brands can be explored through the photos and info on the site, and everything can be shared with friends. The best part: Fans only subscribe to exactly the offers that interest them: a VW event, a Stimorol sample, McDonald’s Coupons, or info about new products from Apple. And all of this in one place.

cooala offers its users:

a playful way to rate brands and share with friendsthe opportunity to discover thousands of new brands, soon also locallya way to collect their favorite brands in Brandboardsthe ability to subscribe to brands they love, receiving product news, event invitations, samples, coupons, gifts, and more. No spam - only what they’ve subscribed to.Complete control over their contact with companies

For Companies: Market research and accurate Targeting

The platform is also very advantageous for companies: for one, messages, information, and giveaways don’t have to be sent randomly and with high waste. Thanks to cooala, fans can decide themselves exactly what they want to get, and receive only the content they choose - a perfect qualified lead.

Companies therefore communicate with their Fans eye to eye, in common agreeance, and without loss.

Also very interesting: cooala delivers real time market research data about brands and their competitors, for example the coolness factor of a brand, market development compared to the competition, and the wants and needs of the users.

cooala offers companies:

Contact with high affinity target groups without waste. An unobtrusive, playful communication channel to existing and new fans.Anonymous market research data about their own brand and those of competitors.Highly efficient tool to launch campaigns easily and quickly with a target oriented approach.

The five cooala partners, all experienced specialists in their fields, are developing the app at full speed. CEO Mike Schwede is confident: “The reactions we’ve seen in young, brand oriented target groups is very positive. They are looking through the Brand Profiles, playing enthusiastically with the App, and are spreading the word through the Share Function.”

iPhone users can download cooala in the Appstore starting today. The Android version of the app is planned for Spring, and the trimmed down Facebook version is currently in development.

Sometimes a little thing change the face of the world, on LinkedIn it's the one-click endorsement. I think it's really a great idea from LinkedIn to introduce this possibility. [note Martin Gysler]

It took LinkedIn nine years to reach 187 million members. It took the professional social network about one month to pass 200 million endorsements.

Endorsements are LinkedIn’s lightweight version of recommendations. The one-click, vote-of-approval option was released in late September; it offers members a quick and easy way to tell the world that a friend or co-worker is skilled in any area imaginable, say journalism, social media, or even kettlebells. Received endorsements are listed on member profiles in the skills and expertise section.

The aptly named world wide web has opened up new methods of marketing for businesses both great and small. The benefits of localizing company websites to target foreign markets are now widely recognized (Common Sense Advisory studies suggest an average return of US$25 for every $1 spent on localization) and many businesses now use social media platforms for domestic marketing, but very few appear to be using those platforms to promote their services abroad.

For example, Econsultancy’s 2010 Social Media and Online PR Report reported that 83% of marketers were planning to increase their spending on social media this year, yet only 26% had plans to run campaigns in more than one country.

This Time cover from a couple of years ago (with the shiny mirrored screen) was prescient, but not quite enough… I’d cross that ‘You’ out and say ‘Us’. Hasn’t it felt that way these last couple of years? How we’ve grown a global collective consciousness?

Despite this cover, YouTube is not usually the first site that comes to mind when thinking about social media. I guess we take it a bit for granted while we wax rhapsodic about Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr and Quora.
