Why I am not paranoid about privacy on Facebook and Google

Why I am not paranoid about privacy on Facebook and Google | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

I have frequently been informed of my naiveté on this matter but I am going to say this anyway: I think the whole privacy scare regarding companies like Facebook and Google is overblown and way out of proportion. I, for one, don’t care how much these companies know about me and how they use all that data.

At its f8 conference last week, Facebook unveiled the new Timeline feature, which takes all the information you have ever entered on the social networking website and puts it on a redesigned profile that is chronologically arranged by year and goes back to your birth. More controversially, it announced additions to Open Graph which will encourage you to share a lot more data on Facebook through third-party applications.

Review: Perfect RSS Reader brings the full Google Reader experience to the iPad

Review: Perfect RSS Reader brings the full Google Reader experience to the iPad | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

As far as news-reading devices go, there’s no better one out there than the iPad. And among web-based apps for subscribing to and keeping track of RSS feeds, Google Reader has very little competition. It’s no surprise, therefore, that the App Store is teeming with apps for the iPad that sync with Google Reader to bring news to Apple’s tablet.

Even with so much competition to contend with, Perfect RSS Reader has made an impressive splash in the crowded pool and made our heads turn. The app wraps practically every feature offered by Google Reader in a well-designed user interface and offers it all for the tantalisingly low price of just $1.99. Let’s take a look at what it’s capable of...

Build Backlinks - 14 Easy Ways

Build Backlinks - 14 Easy Ways | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Google optimization is based on the premise that the more people that like to your website, the more valuable it must be and the higher ranking it deserves in search results.

And almost two decades since it was devised, beneath the sophisticated mathematics, the hordes of MIT grads swallowed into the research and development department, and hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue lies a simple principle: Google optimization works. Popularity is a pretty good indicator of a website’s value.

But what constitutes popularity online? From a search engine’s perspective, backlinks from another site pointing to yours is a meaningful vote of confidence.

Google's mysterious Photovine looks like a photo-sharing service

Google's mysterious Photovine looks like a photo-sharing service | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
A small splash page website has gone up at Photovine.com, a domain and trademark owned by Google.

The frontpage says that “Photovine is a fun way to learn more about your friends, meet new people, and share your world like never before.”

It looks like a social photo sharing app. We’re somewhat surprised to see Google building social services under a different brand name to Google+ after launching the social network in late June, but we’re sure there will be heavy integration...

Google Plus' Circles System May Not be Sustainable | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
This new Social Media platform sound interesting and we can be sure that Google know what they do! I look forward to hear more about Google Circle!

The Tweet Effect: How Twitter Affects Rankings

The Tweet Effect: How Twitter Affects Rankings | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
The advent of social media has brought a host of changes to the SEO industry, and online marketing as a whole. You would be hard-pressed to find a business with a decent online presence that does not have a Twitter account connected to their website, and at least one way to find that account.

Google and Bing recently alerted the SEO industry to the fact that they are using social media signals as a factor in ranking websites. Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land wrote a post back in December 2010 talking about what social signals he thought the search engines are and will be using.

7 Ways For Marketers To Maximize Google+

7 Ways For Marketers To Maximize Google+ | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

So you’re still not on Google+? Or maybe you’ve stuck your toe in the water but holding back to make sure G+ is the real thing.

Better get busy. Google’s already grown to 25 million plus users in only a few weeks, and they could be opening the floodgates to brands soon-Ford is already test-driving its business page. No one knows, but I believe with its financial muscle and market power Google+ will emerge as the leading social platform for business once it fully integrates is search and other tools (Gmail, Chrome, etc).

So you need to hedge your bets by getting involved in G+. But that doesn’t mean you need to throw all your eggs in this basket, or spend all your waking hours on G+. There are ways you can manage your time and use G+ selectively and strategically.

Below are seven examples of maximizing Google+ (efficiently), based on my last few weeks of working on the new platform...

10 risky default settings in social media that you need to check

10 risky default settings in social media that you need to check | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Do you read every single “Terms of Service” you come across before clicking “I Agree” to? If you’re anything like me, the answer is no. In fact, I’ve agreed to hundreds since I first started using AOL 14 years ago, but I haven’t read one. Should we be more careful?

I try to align myself with respectable websites — using services that many others use. And this leaves me with a sort of “someone else will catch it if something’s wrong” mentality. So far (I think) that has worked out okay.

But as online industry grows, and we sign up for one social network after the other, we can’t forget that we’re trusting our sensitive information to corporations. Most TOS include a clause that allows companies to change their TOS whenever they need to. So, in an effort to not be paranoid, but cautious, here’s a list of 8 things to check up on in social media. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be surprised by what you’ve agreed too...
