5 Reasons Social Media Measurement is Making You Lie to Yourself

5 Reasons Social Media Measurement is Making You Lie to Yourself | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Social media measurement causes unsavory (and ineffective) marketing behavior because unlike the rest of our marketing key performance indicators, social media metrics are out there for anyone to see.

Was it a surprise last week when Presidential wannabe Newt Gingrich was (allegedly) busted for having 1.3 million followers on Twitter, most of which were bots and fake accounts? Not really. It may have raised an eyebrow that someone applying for the most important job in the world would (allegedly) stoop to fakery to boost follower counts. But despite some initial reluctance, politics has embraced the social media Egosystem as much or more than any other industry.

(Nice analysis on it from Ian Lurie over at Conversation Marketing)

Being a former political consultant myself, this kerfuffle got me pondering about social media measurement and the bigger lessons of key performance indicators. I see five.

Here are some really useful tools, some of which you will use every day, if you aren't already. Exercise some critical judgment though: a tool is only as good as it's data – so take a moment to check if the data is believable, and to think about other sources you can cross reference against.

Search Engine, Browser and Device Stats

One tool I come back to again and again is StatsCounter – there's data on the market shares of search engines, browser versions, computer, and mobile hardware and operating systems here for most countries. Whilst it's always sensible to compare two sources of this data, this is always where I start.

Five Social Media Trends for 2012

Five Social Media Trends for 2012 | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

It’s that most wonderful time of the year … time to predict the future as we close out the year! I think my 2011 social media predictions were pretty solid, so I’m going to take another stab at it for 2012. Here are the five social media trends I think marketers need to be aware of in the next year as we grow and change along with technology and consumer demand.

Content Marketing

Content curation was so last year. In 2012 we’re going broader; we’ll be talking about a marketing discipline called “Content Marketing.” It’s actually not all that new; in fact, some social media pundits have been talking about it for years. But 2012 is the year content marketing is hits the social media trends list and the mainstream, because content marketing is now a concept that executives can finally sink their teeth into...

Bless William Shakespeare, but brevity isn't necessarily the soul of wit. Fart jokes are brief. Knock-knock jokes are brief. Brevity can be as stupid, superficial and worthless as anything else. It just wastes less of your time when it is.

Why We're All Suddenly Obsessed With Pinterest

Why We're All Suddenly Obsessed With Pinterest | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

It's a good question! The fact is that blogs are filled with articles about Pinterest. For my part, I am absolutely convinced that this kind of social media will wreak havoc among users... and you? [note mg]

It's addictive, fun, visually appealing, and easy, so it's no wonder Pinterest, the popular visual bookmarking site, has hooked millions of users. That said, the site’s growth (below) was fairly flat from its launch in early 2010 until September 2011. But since then, it’s simply been going gangbusters, begging the question--why now? Here are three reasons why we think it’s become so attractive.

1. Pinterest rides (and defines) a new trend: social relevance.

Pinterest is successfully riding a new trend wave in the social space, moving mechanisms for content sharing beyond connections (friends) and towards relevance, effectively broadening the social horizon for us content addicts.

Three Ways NFC Technology Will Create a Brand New Form of Social Media Engagement

Three Ways NFC Technology Will Create a Brand New Form of Social Media Engagement | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

As the number of smartphone users continues to grow at an incredible rate, the challenge facing many retail brands is to continue to find ways of utilising smartphone technologies to effectively connect and engage with consumers. In recent months many retail brands have focused on smartphone features that integrate with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Foursquare, to not only create something new and unique as part of the consumer journey, but to also take advantage of the fact that through successfully integrating social media with the overall brand experience, the likelihood of fans and customers “sharing” branded content and increasing brand visibilty in the social space is also increased; something that more and more companies are continually striving to achieve across multiple social media and online PR campaigns. Interestingly, something that an increasing number of people are now starting to talk about when looking at the ways smartphones are shaping consumer and brand day-to-day lives, is Near Field Communication technologies (NFC) and the possibilities that they present.
