Keywords remain important to your content and link strategies.

But there is one change coming down the Google pipeline that will change keywords…semantic search technology and the human element.

What is semantic search?

Basically, semantic search is technology that tries to determine what users mean when they type in a certain keyword.

They explore the semantics of those words…or the meaning behind them.

For example, if someone typed in “laptop” do they mean:

  • That they want to buy a laptop?
  • Have one repaired?
  • Upgraded?
  • Are they even talking about a computer, but something entirely different?

In the real world most people don’t search with one keyword…additional keywords give additional clues.

I hear a lot of webmasters complain day in and day out about all the changes that Google constantly makes to its algorithm and how they affect our search engine placement.

 

Let me break it to you: it’s not all about what Google has done and will do to update its algorithm.

 

It’s about what you SHOULD BE doing.

 

I am sure we all can agree that Google’s ultimate goal is to help people find the most relevant and highest quality sites in Google’s search results (whether they are any good at it is not the question). They are not putting out all these updates just to mess with you...

Thanks, I'm glad, that you like it! The RSS plugin works also on wordpress.com? I have tried to install some plugins several months ago but without success... ;-( Yes, I posted it manually to test Billboards.

No worries Martin perhaps I can eventually set us an RSS myself to import your feed, but for now you can always post occasionally when you like curation is very quick, and also feel free to submit any articles you write as a guest post.

The other reason is Google Panda. Remember Google’s update this past year that took down a lot of the content farms? That algorithm was designed to penalize short and shallow articles and reward high-quality content.

One of the best ways to plan for online success in the coming year is too look back at many of the algorithm changes that Google has made and the effects they will have on blogging in 2012. This year has seen well over 500 algorithm modifications, primarily coming from the Panda and Freshness updates. During this period of time, Matt Cutts and fellow Google folk did their best to help a lot of webmasters understand the implications of the various patches and updates that they have uploaded.

 

But quite frankly, many small internet marketers and niche websites got hit pretty badly. After Google’s Panda updates were first applied, many bloggers lost thousands of visitors per month and often dropped out of first page results that had netted them steady organic traffic. This is not something you want to be caught up in again, so make sure your blog is getting the time and effort it needs to boast user worthy content and see increased traffic from Google next year.

SEOmoz readers are no strangers to the concept of search engine ranking factors. In general, much of the community that comments seems to delight when some new factor is discovered that may provide a potential ranking boost. Who wouldn't, right? But in this post, I'd like to suggest that perhaps some refocusing on the "forest" of the ranking factors world, rather than the individual "trees" that populate it, might be in order.


I've been writing about SEO since 1996, from before we even called it SEO and from before Google existed. In those 15+ years, I've seen no end of attempts to "chase the algorithm." My goal, writing to a broad audience, has always been to highlight the important factors that stand the test of time...
