5 Ways Writers Can Break Out of the Tired Old Social Media Box | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

The social media world is changing daily. In other words, we must be alert and aware of the new tools that could support us in our approach. This interesting article speaks about some "new" tools that can also help us to go towards to success. [note Martin Gysler]

It’s time to teach that old dog some new tricks.

That old dog I’m referring to is social media.

Sure, you’re already blogging, and on Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, Facebook, and more. Great.

But I’m telling you — there’s more to social media than meets the eye. The final chapter on social media hasn’t been written.

When I kicked off my writing business in April, I decided to use social media my way.

I approached these overused networks as if I’d never heard of them. I made my own rules. I set different expectations. You could say I wrote my own chapter on social media marketing.

What Not to Share on Twitter or LinkedIn

What Not to Share on Twitter or LinkedIn | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

I really want to tell you about my lingerie ... but I'm not going to.

It's true that I've found a certain line of women's underwear that I'm so excited about that, at times, I'm inclined to want to tweet and Facebook about them. But clearly, I don't—because I impose upon myself the common sense "10 second rule."

As a business owner as well as an individual who values some boundaries on her privacy, I take 10 seconds to ask myself, Do I really want the whole world to know this about me? Because in all the haste to seem social media savvy, I've seen a lot of smart people do, say and post a lot of things they may come to regret later...

10 risky default settings in social media that you need to check

10 risky default settings in social media that you need to check | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Do you read every single “Terms of Service” you come across before clicking “I Agree” to? If you’re anything like me, the answer is no. In fact, I’ve agreed to hundreds since I first started using AOL 14 years ago, but I haven’t read one. Should we be more careful?

I try to align myself with respectable websites — using services that many others use. And this leaves me with a sort of “someone else will catch it if something’s wrong” mentality. So far (I think) that has worked out okay.

But as online industry grows, and we sign up for one social network after the other, we can’t forget that we’re trusting our sensitive information to corporations. Most TOS include a clause that allows companies to change their TOS whenever they need to. So, in an effort to not be paranoid, but cautious, here’s a list of 8 things to check up on in social media. Who knows? Maybe you’ll be surprised by what you’ve agreed too...

Build Backlinks - 14 Easy Ways

Build Backlinks - 14 Easy Ways | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Google optimization is based on the premise that the more people that like to your website, the more valuable it must be and the higher ranking it deserves in search results.

And almost two decades since it was devised, beneath the sophisticated mathematics, the hordes of MIT grads swallowed into the research and development department, and hundreds of billions of dollars in revenue lies a simple principle: Google optimization works. Popularity is a pretty good indicator of a website’s value.

But what constitutes popularity online? From a search engine’s perspective, backlinks from another site pointing to yours is a meaningful vote of confidence.

LinkedIn’s one-click endorsements are crazy popular

LinkedIn’s one-click endorsements are crazy popular | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Sometimes a little thing change the face of the world, on LinkedIn it's the one-click endorsement. I think it's really a great idea from LinkedIn to introduce this possibility. [note Martin Gysler]

It took LinkedIn nine years to reach 187 million members. It took the professional social network about one month to pass 200 million endorsements.

Endorsements are LinkedIn’s lightweight version of recommendations. The one-click, vote-of-approval option was released in late September; it offers members a quick and easy way to tell the world that a friend or co-worker is skilled in any area imaginable, say journalism, social media, or even kettlebells. Received endorsements are listed on member profiles in the skills and expertise section.

You may love social media, but even the biggest fans of the social web will find some sources of frustration. What is your social media pain point? I thought I'd explore some of the main ones I've identified and offer up some potential solutions.

1. Managing Your Profile and Reputation

So many networks, so many different audiences and connections. Maybe you’re feeling like you have split personalities: being professional on LinkedIn, running at the mouth on Twitter, then letting your hair down on Facebook. But wait! You forgot that you’re connected with your boss or your client on Facebook. Panic ensues. Or what if someone is Googling your name before interviewing you for a job. What will they find? Over the last 10 years, we’ve all learned some tough lessons about what it means to be digital.

I spent some time this evening cruising around Facebook, LinkedIn, Goolge+, Pinterest, and a few hundred other platforms. I had high hopes for finishing a couple blog posts but instead got lured in by the latest social news. You know how it is. Just as we get use to something it changes, a ticker is added, more of our activity gets shared, a new social network is born, mobile app launched and the list goes on.

As I wasted my night away in social slacker land with all my fellow slacker geeks I was amazed at how many people are simply losing their mind. I guess I am so close to all of it that I forget how many business leaders, entrepreneurs and consumers are still learning.

How to Create a Jaw Dropping Social Media Strategy in 5 Steps

How to Create a Jaw Dropping Social Media Strategy in 5 Steps | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Social media is not a campaign… it’s a channel. It’s a means to an end, not an end in itself. That means your social media networks should be part of a larger marketing plan.

With that being said, you still need a set of goals to guide your individual social media efforts. Like most marketing plans, social media channels need to go through the following five goals in order to produce the kind of results that are truly profitable.

Step #1: Identify warm prospects

Step #2: Establish a conversation with your prospect

Step #3: Gain rapport with your prospect

Step #4: Develop a social media relationship

Just because you are talking to people doesn’t mean you have

Step #5: Track the lifetime value of a relationship

7 Quick Ways to Turn Your LinkedIn Profile into a Social Media Marketing Workhorse | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it
In my opinion, the most powerful social media profile you can use is the LinkedIn profile. Most powerful that is, if you are looking to do more business and/or achieve your professional goals.

There’s a certain mindset LinkedIn members have when they spend time there.

They don’t browse through pictures and videos of their friends.

They don’t go there to share 140 characters of their current status.

And they don’t go there to watch panda bears sneeze or talking dogs say “I love you”...

Random acts of marketing (RAMs) will melt the positive in your business checking account, return on investment and brand equity like an ice cube on a hot day on hot cement. RAMS are a leading cause for failure in business, marketing and of course social media.

Are Facebook and LinkedIn Violating Your Privacy?

Are Facebook and LinkedIn Violating Your Privacy? | SOCIAL MEDIA, what we think about! | Scoop.it

Have you noticed the buzz about privacy this past week? I speak and blog about social media and privacy issues so I keep my ear to the ground. What surprises me lately is how often I see wall posts on Facebook about privacy violations. LinkedIn ended up in hot water with their members for the same sort of thing. Here’s what made people nervous this week and why.

Facebook loosens security settings
If you’re a Facebook user, chances are you saw this post pop up on the wall of someone you follow. Four people in my relatively tiny network posted this message:

FB has quietly changed something! Take a look at your URL address (the top box on your screen.) If you see “http” instead of “https” you DO NOT have a secure session & can be HACKED. Go to Account – Account Settings – Account Security – click edit. Check box (secure browsing), click Save. FB has automatically set it on the non-secure setting! Do your friends a huge favor, copy & re-post.. Mine was on the non-secure setting and had to change it...
