A very interesting comparison of several measurement tools and what they really measure. [note mg]


For marketers, PR professionals and customer service teams, personal influence measurement tools can save time and help facilitate business decisions. Tools such as Klout, PeerIndex, Kred and TweetLevel are being used by brands to rank the relative importance of customers and prospects, prioritize customer service responses, and identify groups of influencers to target with perks and product sampling promotions.


But what are these personal influence measurement tools really measuring? Are they really an effective way to understand which of your customers are more influential?


It is easy to understand influence as a concept; if you can get other people to do something, you have influence. But it’s not at all easy to define how you would measure influence. As Nathan Gilliatt has pointed out, there is no such thing as a “unit of influence” – an observable, measurable event that reflects influence.

This morning, I was doing my usual scan of emails and noticed I had received a recognition Klout “K” for social media. With a smile, I popped over to my Klout profile to find that I had dropped from a rating of 60 to 43 overnight. I immediately thought it must be a bug and if it was not, I will practice what I preach and would just continue to work with my communities building relationships.

 

As the day went on, I realized many were quite infuriated by what seemed to be yet another change and drop in their Klout rating. By the end of the day, the ratings had been fixed however by then I had witnessed a slew of blogs sharing they have deleted their accounts and yet again Klout seems to be under-fire. So why am I sharing all this?

 

As you know I am passionate about Social Media. It is an exciting time and it seems to be continuously innovating. It is food for the creative. However, with continuous innovation, comes continuous change. So how do you manage change in this arena?...

Social Media Influence Scoring (like PROskore or Klout) is here to stay – get used to it. It’s not useful to judge it as good or bad. It’s useful and it’s profitable. Just like Fair Isaac’s FICO scores. Love ‘em or hate ‘em, they’re here to stay. That doesn't mean that Klout is here to stay.


Why Is It Here to Stay?


Because it'll be a hugely profitable venture.


Advertisers will increasingly be clamoring to know who the social media “heavy hitters” are. They’ll pay for scores. Employers, recruiting firms and such will subscribe to scoring services. A lot of people would subscribe as they’ll have a vested interest in their own scores.

If you have been online Twitter or Facebook this week it would be hard to miss the chatter on Klout and their new algorithm. A new algorithm launched on October 26, 2011.


There were strong arguments for and against the change. Although Klout stated “a majority of users will see their scores stay the same or go up”, there seems to be more that dropped than not. Many saw a drop of of 15+ points. My personal score dropped 19 points. I am yet to receive an explanation or a response to my email from Klout as to the change and to several other very important questions I asked them.


As Danny Brown summarized in the article, “Is Klout Using Our Privacy to Violate our Privacy?” there are concerns that Klout is creating and publicly publishing profiles of minors set to private on Facebook for people who haven’t ever signed up for Klout...

I don't know exactly how Klout calculates my influence score. No one does. It's their secret sauce so we don’t know for sure. But we can guess based on little information that we do have...

I got pointed to a post on the Klout blog today about their reworked formula. Since I haven’t any accounts linked to their service, I didn’t have much reason to care.


But then I began to read the comment thread, and I was transfixed. The first comment set the tone: “My score went from 73 down to 53. 20 point drop. I’ve been working for months to increase my Klout score. Please fix this.”...

If you hate Klout … and you probably do … try to take a deep breath and read ahead with an open mind.

 

Nothing seems to get rational people in a frenzy as much as Klout and its attempt to measure “influence.” I have immersed myself in the world of online power and influence over the past six months and feel like at this point I have probably studied this topic more than any person on earth! And, unlike every other blogger on the planet it seems, I’ve come to the conclusion that this is a very important development. In fact, a historically important development.

 

Before I get into why, let’s knock a few obvious facts out of the way:

The pugilists are plentiful, and appear to be trying to win a merit badge for dismissiveness. Recently the discussions around tools that measure your influence got hotter and hotter. Even the New York Times found the topic worthy enough to write about it. In the Social Media space I see very mixed responses to the discussion.

 

Some praise the top tools in the space, Klout and PeerIndex as one of the best things that came along to organize and understand Social Media patterns more easily.

 

Others believe it is a useless measurement. The argument is that there is absolutely no proof that the parameter used are helpful in anyway. Many also claim that it is far too easy to game the algorithm and make the whole score useless.

I’ve gotten as tired as many of you with all the Klout talk. Tired enough that I’m really surprised to find myself writing a blog post on it at this point in time.


After careful consideration, I decided to pull the plug on Klout. I’ve been having a lot of clients, friends and acquaintances ask for my opinion. Companies such as Klout and PeerIndex say they can measure individuals' online
influence. Monty Munford wonders whether this is even true, let
alone relevant.

 

"Measuring Influence since 2008" is the grandiose claim on the Klout website that is supposed to entice people to check a score from 1 to 100 on how their engagement on social media impacts on their peers.


When I read this I was minded of the Hollywood film L.A. Story when Steve Martin tries to woo a visiting English reporter by taking her around his city. 'Some of these houses are almost 25 years old' he enthuses, thinking that he's impressing her.

Klout.com was one of the first on the scene in September 2009, measuring -- on a scale of 1 to 100 -- your online influence on sites like Twitter and Facebook. Since launching, the company added LinkedIn, YouTube, Foursquare and most recently Google + to its algorithm. A company's "klout scores" have been used to target influencers and provide perks ranging from Hollywood studio film premiere tickets to Spotifyinvites.


While Klout has pretty much owned the social-media influence market, some are questioning the reliability of the company's data and "score."


Enter, Kred, which is a social-media scoring system that seeks to measure a person's online influence. But Kred, which was created by the San Francisco-based social analytics firm PeopleBrowsr, attempts to also measure a person or company's engagement, or as they call it, outreach. How long does a tweet last before it loses steam and falls by the wayside? If you have a high Klout score, it may last up to 67 times longer than other users.


The social influence measuring tool studied the impact of a tweet over time, based on a user’s Klout score. Specifically, the company wanted to know how many retweets different types of users garner and how much time it takes before those retweets cut in half — or the half-life of a tweet. Klout measured a week’s worth of retweet data to find out.


The results are stark. If you have a Klout score between 40 and 70, you can expect your tweet’s half-life to last for just five minutes. If you have a Klout score between 70 and 75 though, that number quintuples to 25 minutes...

In a post on the Klout corporate blog yesterday, founder and CEO of Klout, Joe Fernandez, announced a new algorithm for Klout will be released next week: "I am incredibly proud of the work the team has done and I am excited to announce the biggest improvement to the Klout Score in our history is launching next week."

 

He went over 4 main criteria: Amplification, Network Impact, Accuracy and Transparency and Ability to Drive Action

 

The overwhelming tone of the post was that you aren't influential because you're talk a lot, you're influential who you talk TO (and who replies). An example cited was if someone rarely likes or comments on anyone’s posts, but chooses to do so to yours, that is more meaningful than if they like 60 posts a day...

Twitter is NOT easy! At least that is what I used to think when I first discovered what Twitter meant for me. This is what I learnt whilst trying to develop my profile for personal and professional growth. I found I could easily spend the majority of my day focusing on nothing but Twitter.

 

That involved finding content, reading tweets, tweeting my finds and sending RTs. While this was effective at starting to build my reputation it was painful, time consuming and I knew it was not sustainable.
