How ready is 3D for delivering museum services? | V&A

How ready is 3D for delivering museum services? | V&A | Social media, web, apps and cultural heritage | Scoop.it
Reflections from people using 3D for real in museums. They are from two great pre-conference workshops at Museums and the Web 2013 in Portland.
Kajsa Hartig's insight:

"As it stands right now there are a number of issues and service delivery challenges for managers looking to embed 3D features permanently into their museum services.  Useable 3D technology exists in one form or another now, that can do amazing things that can be used to build great services, but some care is needed to scope this work."

The role of curators in storytelling as tribal influencers and bankers | Tribaling | Social media, web, apps and cultural heritage | Scoop.it
Kajsa Hartig's insight:

"Curators represent a new type of tribal leadership that operates bottom-up and peer to peer. As a member of a tribe, curators will always be more native and relevant than any outsiders will ever be. Within a tribe they are not only appreciated for leveraging their insider skills, but for sustaining and developing their culture."

Brooklyn Museum : Teaching with a 3D Simulacrum

Brooklyn Museum : Teaching with a 3D Simulacrum | Social media, web, apps and cultural heritage | Scoop.it
samuel bausson's curator insight, April 25, 11:40 AM

Did having these touchable models deepen participants’ engagement with the artwork ? Did people walk away feeling like they’d had a satisfying tactile experience with this sculpture ?

Visitors (...) paid careful, detailed attention to the surface of the sculpture and all of its contours. They held up the 3D models and compared them to the original sculpture in front of them.

(...) but the stone and scarves seemed to spark a wider variety of conversation and brought people’s focus back to the sculpture more quickly.

The 3D prints are new tools for us to play with, and we need to work with them more to get more comfortable. What are the best kinds of questions to ask people when we put these into their hands?

Where Did All The Search Traffic Go?

Where Did All The Search Traffic Go? | Social media, web, apps and cultural heritage | Scoop.it
Traffic from Google to digital publishers dropped 30% over the past eight months.
Kajsa Hartig's insight:

"Now that content requires human muscle to be shared on social platforms, publishers need to expend a different kind of energy focused on creating content that's emotional, funny and discoverable — i.e. the stuff you might want to share. And this may be what's killing search traffic too."

samuel bausson's curator insight, April 1, 11:34 AM

Luckily, evidence points in the direction that it is people who make change, not organisations, and a positive change needs the right people at the right time doing the right stuff. Easier said than done.

While she definitely wanted to champion and broaden the remit of ‘smart digital folks’ within the museum, she didn’t think she needed a digital strategy, but as she was expected to write one, she included best practice examples and used it to get a buy-in at the top of the organisation. She also used it as an opportunity to articulate new approaches, such as open-by-default and inclusive design.

To me, the most influential factor for the success of this digitally forced change at the National Maritime Museum was the willingness of the decision-makers in the museum to embrace this new way of thinking, move away from the idea of digital as a servant, and let highly digitally literate to lead the way into the ‘digital within physical’ future.

How to Turn Employees Into a Beacon For Your Brand

How to Turn Employees Into a Beacon For Your Brand | Social media, web, apps and cultural heritage | Scoop.it

Where there had once been some standard “stock art” pictures of laughing women drinking coffee, I now saw these gigantic canvases, remarkably hard-hitting and moving. It was an unexpected and radical change for the store as I looked upon what appeared to be a series of Italian village scenes of mature men playing cards. Serious, concentrated, a bit down at heel.

Secrets of a Museum Social Media Manager — Media Lab — Walker Art Center

Secrets of a Museum Social Media Manager — Media Lab — Walker Art Center | Social media, web, apps and cultural heritage | Scoop.it

1. Know your museum, know it well.

2. Your social media person has to be a good writer.

3a. ‘Likes’ and followers matter

3b. Caveat: If your likes go up and your engagement numbers also don’t go up (number of active comments and conversations), that’s a problem.

4. Talk to people.

5a. Make it genuine.

5b. A confession: I’m hyper-aware about the number of messages being sent out from each channel every day.  Probably too much so. People don’t mind if you post several times on Facebook in a day, as long as those posts are spread out a little bit, but I’m very sensitive about it.

5c. What is doing it right? Paying attention to Twitter, what’s trending nationally, internationally (to a certain extent, don’t talk about pop stars in scandals), and within your sphere.

5d. The argument for different voices is a consistent argument.

The New Normal: Three Elements of Social Media Success for Nonprofit Organizations | Social media, web, apps and cultural heritage | Scoop.it

"All too often, I encounter CEOs of nonprofit organizations who simply think that the task of carrying out effective social media consists of, well, “doing social media.” To these leaders, the task would seem to require one full-time equivalent (or, preferably less, if they can possibly get away with it!), and comprises some nebulous combination of posting Facebook statuses, re-writing press releases to masquerade as blog posts, and running around a museum with a cell phone camera."
