Museum-ID is an independent think tank for museum and heritage professionals. Innovative ideas between professionals working in museums and heritage organisations around the world
Kajsa Hartig's insight:

"The existing museum structure is one in which individual departments provide support for the current project, in which curators create, the development departments fundraises, membership acquires new members, marketing and communications sell/promote, and education provides interpretation. Each department acts as a domino moving the direction of the exhibition or project. In this mode the visitor is last in line, and left outside the creative process."

Is there a future for the traditional museum?

Is there a future for the traditional museum? | Museums and emerging technologies | Scoop.it
It's a Sunday afternoon in October at the British Museum. Everyone comes to museums to look at the stuff on display, but looking at the people doing the looking is often as interesting. There are excited kids and bored teenagers, nonplussed parents and not-fussed couples. There are also huge groups of Chinese tourists crocodiling from Norman Foster's covered courtyard into the museum's new extension – a sober £135m box by Graham Stirk – to see the current blockbuster exhibition filled with Ming vases whose plinths should definitely not be leant upon, Groucho Marx-style.
Kajsa Hartig's insight:

"The tension in reconciling what the museum feels duty-bound to present with what consumers show that they want is likely to lead to an even greater emphasis on entertainment," believes Stephen Fleming, director of the National Museum of Computing.

Why Curation Matters to Content - Profs

Why Curation Matters to Content - Profs | Museums and emerging technologies | Scoop.it

Digest...

Curation is thought leadership

One common misconception is that thought leadership is exclusively the domain of original content. Curation offers the opportunity not just to participate in the conversation but own and shape it.

Curation is a service

The dark side of this prolific age is that consumers are in a position to sort through all that content to find what's good, what's valuable, what's worth sharing. It's overwhelming... and a time suck. But that's when the act of curating becomes a service to your audience members. You're saving them time, connecting them to the information that they should invest their time in.

Curation is efficiency

Curated content makes it possible to sustain a more effective cadence without that high cost that comes with creating new content. Curating content is a practical and effective way to fill otherwise dead air, in addition to its many other perks.

Curation is imperative

But for all its value, perhaps the most driving factor behind curation is that the life and reach of content thrives on it, ensuring that the third-party content that is selected is always meaningful to consumers and ultimately valuable to the business.

Once you realize that you don't own all the intellectual capital in your space, curation then becomes a valuable add-on to your content marketing strategy. And indeed it is a service (you're reading this, aren't you?).
