How the Google +1 Button Affects your Search Results | Social Media Today

How the Google +1 Button Affects your Search Results | Social Media Today | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it

In the course of our ever-evolving research on Social Media trends we discovered a great whitepaper on the effects of the Google +1 button and how it affects impressions, traffic, and overall search rankings, when placed on a website.

SEO Effect Tools did an experiment, with "over 70 readers of SEO Effect voting ‘+1’ for three pages in the Google search results." From the results of the whitepaper, SEO Effect’s opinion is that adding the Google +1 button to a website offers much more benefit than adding a Facebook Like button to a website. And it's incredibly easy to do.

The Google +1 Button

Google has included a few interesting perks for +1 users - for starters, when someone clicks on the +1 button, the social influence of the link increases, improving the link's chance of relevancy in search results. Not only that, but the click throughs increase because, as SEO Effect Tools writes, "social recommendations from a circle of friends are often even more convincing than expert reviews."

Everything You Need to Know About the New Twitter

Everything You Need to Know About the New Twitter | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it
Twitter rolled out on Tuesday a series of design updates aimed to add more personality to member pages. Photos have been brought to the forefront and room has been made for Facebook Timeline-like cover images.

Twitter CEO Dick Costolo first unveiled the updates during morning news program The Today Show — an unlikely stage for a tech company that is continually introducing new features and designs. Since the announcement was coupled with a short segment about Twitter’s growth and success, it was likely part of an effort to introduce the platform to a greater audience not yet using the site.

Member profile photos have been moved from the top left to a spot in the center of the page. Users can upload a long horizontal “header” image that resembles the cover photo concept currently used on Facebook and Google+. Existing profile pictures are embedded in the center of the header.

Tweet for your brand with hashtags!

Tweet for your brand with hashtags! | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it

Many businesses have heard that Twitter can play a role in how they market their brand. However, it is not always clear how Twitter can be used in comparison to Facebook and other social media tool.

When not used properly, marketers cannot expect to receive a high ROI with their Twitter accounts.

One of the most powerful ways to get a large number of views for a tweet is to use relevant hashtags. A tweet can be categorized by keyword by placing the “#” symbol before the word. This symbol tells the Twitter search engine to index the tweet in their search engine, making it easier for customers to find a business’s tweet.

Also, when a company frequently releases tweets that are associated with particular keywords, customers are more likely to associate the company with that said keyword.

5 Things You Should Never, Ever Share On Twitter...

Your phone number
Don’t tweet your digits. Your Twitter follower can reach you in 140 characters, and maybe on your Facebook page and your blog… they don’t need to call you at 3a.m.

Your home address
Like your phone number, your home address is just a little too personal to be shared via Twitter. There have been cases of criminal watching Twitter accounts to collect data like the individual’s home address and their vacation days.

Your body parts
Hands are OK. Face is fine. but below the belt shots are just too much for Twitter.

Your credit card and banking information
Yes people actually do this. And if you’re one, be ashamed.

Password hints
What’s your mother’s maiden name? Or the name of your first pet? If you’re answering questions like these, chances are you’re being duped.

Clare Chen's curator insight, April 4, 2013 6:12 AM

This article shows the effectiveness of Social Media. In the last few years social media has exploded into the business scene. It all really started with Facebook and now it almost seems like businesses cannot survive without it! But how effective is it? In IMC, one of the most important aspects of marketing is the evaluation part at the end where you determine whether your campaign was successful. This is an evaluation of social media on businesses. In this article it clearly shows that businesses tie their success to social media and most are beginning to look beyond sales goal to identify the value of social marketing efforts.Social media also improves businesses appearance in search engines. It is also founded that most businesses did not have social media 3 years ago but started about 2 years ago so we can see what a quick growth this is. However the most important thing before using social media is to identify the businesses objectives since every business is different. In IMC we learn that objectives provide a benchmark against which the success or failure of the promotional campaign can be measured. By identifying objectives, the business will be able to use social media smartly.

Gillian Ye's comment, April 4, 2013 11:53 PM
It was great to see all the facts and figures relating to the effetiveness of marketing through social media. Its pretty evident that social media is now a huge element in promoting companies especially on popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube. It really is the future as more and more companies are planning to increase their social media efforts as they can see how successful it can be.
Dong Wook Han's comment, April 6, 2013 9:47 AM
Social network has become so powerful over the recent years and it gives opportunities for brands to communicate with their consumers or customers and market and promote their products. I wonder how long it would last as a platform and tool for marketing, promotions and communications.

2 Key Ways to Advertise on Twitter | Jeffbullas's Blog

2 Key Ways to Advertise on Twitter | Jeffbullas's Blog | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it
Twitter has been for most its life an organic social media marketing platform and SMS service on steroids.

How to Advertise on Twitter
For the average business there are essentially two major types of ways to buy advertising on Twitter. “Promoted Accounts” and “Promoted Tweets”

1. Promoted Accounts

Following someone onTwitter is a sign of online affinity so the Promoted accounts is about promoting your Twitter’s brand account and teasing and tempting people to follow you through a paid campaign.

This is done in two ways:
Your Twitter account is featured in search results
It appears in the “Who to Follow” section
This is achieved by the smarts within Twitter’s account recommendation engine that identifies similar accounts and followers that most likely be interested in your account.

2. Promoted Tweets
Promoted tweets have been available since 2010. In March, 2012 Twitter announced that this service would also be brought to mobile devices as well.
These promoted tweets can be targeted to
Search results
User timelines
They can also be location delivered with geographic targeting. They are more overt and include special offers and discounts.

Twitterology: The Study of Behavior and Language Via 140 Characters | The Next Great Generation

Twitterology: The Study of Behavior and Language Via 140 Characters | The Next Great Generation | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it

When Twitter first came on the scene in 2006, most did not understand it. What’s the point of a message limited to 140 characters? Why do I need a Facebook status without the rest of Facebook?

Why would anyone care what I am doing? Little did those skeptics know Twitter would soon explode into being the next “big” thing in the realm of social media. Soon, millions would be using the social networking site. People would be tweeting so often, they’d overload the server and the infamous fail whale would appear, creating a surge of disappointment as users’ tweets were unable to be shared.

Today, Twitter has taken over with millions of active Twitter accounts hosted by men, women and nearly all consumer brands alike. But is there a deeper meaning?

Pinterest users spend more money than Facebook, Twitter users | Articles | Social Media | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it

There are a lot of things about Pinterest you probably already know.

You know most Pinterest users are women (79 percent).

And you know Pinterest grew considerably in the past year. It had 608,000 users in June of 2011. That number jumped to more than 20 million in June of 2012.

But a new infographic from Fast Company shows some more interesting facts:

  • American Pinterest users spend an average of 15 minutes and 50 seconds on the site.
  • It took one day for the Pinterest iPad app to hit No. 1 in Apple’s app store.
  • During the Academy Awards’ red carpet show, there was a 150 percent increase in items pinned.
  • The stores most frequently pinned are Barneys New York, Nordstrom, Sephora U.S.A, Victoria’s Secret, and Williams-Sonoma.

Social media can help you achieve more goals

Social media can help you achieve more goals | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it
Here are three tips on using social media to help you achieve your goal(s) by the end of the year.

1. Focus: Bigger is not always better. Often there is an inverse relationship between the size of a community and the strength of the community. Start looking within a tightly defined niche first, and then, if you need to, widen your definition until you find a group that is big enough to adequately support you.

2. Fit: As the saying goes, different strokes for different folks. To get the benefits from a social-media community, it has to be a good fit for you. Pay particular attention to the tone of communications, the frequency of messaging, aesthetics, etc. Those details matter -- if you don't like them, you won't want to interact.

3. Competitions or Challenges: Many groups have structured competitions or challenges that you can participate in to help you achieve your goal more quickly. For example, in the monthly GetButtonedUp.com challenges, we provide a daily email with one task to complete and then require a check-in via email, Facebook or Twitter. The less work you have to do to create a path on your own, the less resistance you have to getting started. In addition, if the road map is combined with a little friendly competition, it can supercharge your motivation.

Klout Unveils Redesign And A Scoring System That Looks At Real World Influence

Klout Unveils Redesign And A Scoring System That Looks At Real World Influence | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it
Klout, the site that aims to measure your online influence, has made some big changes to its scoring system, and it has a new look to match the new algorithm.

Founder and CEO Joe Fernandez says that the old Klout score looked at less than 100 “signals”, while the new one looks at more than 400.

Put another way, he says the amount of data points that the company analyzes daily is expanding from 1 billion to 12 billion. For the first time, Klout is including measures of real-world influence in its scores — in other words, it’s looking for signs that you’re Kind Of A Big Deal offline, even if you don’t have hundreds of thousands of followers on Twitter.

In practice, that means Klout profiles look a lot more like profiles on other social networking sites. When you look at your own profile, you’ll see a timeline of your social network updates and whether they’re “influencing” other users. When you look at someone else’s profile, you see their most “influential moments” — Fernandez says that means it’s less about judging someone with a number and more about capturing what kind of person they are online, and whether you might, say, want to follow them on Twitter.

For the first time, we’re really showing off the value to consumers, Fernandez says.

Six Key Benefits Curators Provide To Content Creators: Jan Gordon

Six Key Benefits Curators Provide To Content Creators: Jan Gordon | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it

Jan Gordon writes:
"Content Curation is in its infancy and there’s a lot of misunderstanding about its potential. As I see it, it’s a brilliant B2B marketing strategy for anyone who is selling a product or service if done responsibly.

Content Curators are providing a very valuable service for the original author and their own audiences.

Here is what ethical, responsible curators are providing for content creators:

1. Syndicating content and introducing it to new audiences, which is excellent PR if it is being curated by a “trusted source”

2. A good headline grabs the attention of a reader and gets them into the piece quickly. A curator who can tailor the headline to grab their audience will inevitably send more traffic to the original article

3. A curator who is skilled at adding commentary and context to the original piece also broadens the audience of the original work

4. Curation is one of the building blocks of collective intelligence

5. If a curator fully accredits both author and article, authors might have a whole new area of exposure/distribution channel that they wouldn’t have had before

6. People get paid to market and open up new business for brands. Curators do this free of charge while building their own audience. Each party gains. It is a new and exciting form of symbiosis in business."

See Jan's original and full commentary, from which the above was excerpted, here: http://www.scoop.it/t/content-curation-social-media/p/736241569/is-content-curation-stealing-or-a-shrewd-b2b-marketing-practice

If Content is King, than Context is God - Gary Vaynerchuk

If Content is King, than Context is God - Gary Vaynerchuk | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it

Turns out, Bill Gates was wrong. Back in 2006, the Microsoft founder famously said that content was king. He's not too far from the truth, but it turns out that context matters even more and that fact isn't going anywhere fast.

Defining Context

The technical definition of context is the circumstances and facts that surround a situation. When it comes to content, context is the way you're publishing, distributing and promoting your content.

Picking Your Forums

The key to success is two-fold: you need to discover where people are connecting and you need to learn the context of that particular platform.

Get Your Tone Right & Provide Effort to your Customers

So it turns out, that worshiping content wasn't the right approach all along. Content is king, context is god and the value of effort is not going anywhere for a really long time.

Your data is going to look much better if you've started the game with an approach built around context and effort. Learn where people are connecting, get the tone of the forum and never stop working to retain your clients.
