Last week, Gartner released the results of their study around the 5 top emerging trends in digital marketing, and one of the big 5 is around the “rise of big content”.

Most marketers understand how important content is for their audience and their overall marketing strategy, but they critically lack resources/skills to either create good content or source good content to curate.

The choice of words Gartner used was very wise: we all know “marketers understanding that” does not mean “CEOs understanding that”. So just like most marketers, you might be facing a situation where you and anyone within your company who can and would write has millions of other things to do with deadlines that can’t be pushed.

Digital marketing has revolutionized advertisements and general marketing tactics. Before the internet, a company would have to create an advertisement, or hire an advertisement agency, and then the advertisement would either be in a newspaper, on the television, etc. This was not very effective for multiple reasons from the advertisement blending in, people blocking the advertisement out, and the lack of knowledge of how many people it was reaching/how effective it really is. Now, think how productive it would be if a person were able to see how many people see the advertisement and what happens after the advertisement. Maybe even with a follow up to the original advertisement. This is possible with digital marketing. Digital marketing opens up new channels and means for the way advertisements are presented as well as taking it a step further and providing ways to follow up on said advertisement and add to it. An advertisement might intrigue a viewer, or just spark an interest, but sometimes it takes an extra step to really pull someone in to commit to the product, candidate, etc. Before digital marketing, a company would put out the original advertisement, and then if they wanted to take it a step further they would have to pay to put another advertisement out. That can become costly to a company, especially if the company is small or just starting out.  With digital marketing, creating an advertisement, presenting it on a platform, following up on the advertisement, and seeing how effective it was is all possible and cost effective. Advertisements can be put onto almost any website outlet in many different platforms from traditional appearance advertisements, videos, interactive advertisements, etc. with the ease of just clicking on it to access more information. Once the viewer is drawn to the website, there could be a deal for people who enter their e-mail address which will in turn let them receive the deal as well as gain more information in the future about the company. What’s great about this is that the company will be able to see how many people have accessed their website as to see how effective the advertisement was as well as how many people have entered their e-mail address. In this day and age it’s all about gaining a viewers attention as well as getting them to take the next step. Most people do not even see traditional advertisements anymore; they just blend in or get blocked out. If a small company had a traditional advertisement, and did not have a digital platform, there’s no way to gain instant access to more information. Most people are not going to seek more information by calling or physically going to the company. We do not live in a world like that anymore, everything is instant and if it’s not at our fingertips we are not interested. Digital marketing gives big and small companies an even level playing field at a cost effective rate to reach a bigger audience.
