Klout Bought By Lithium Tech & Why Klout Matters - The Next Web

Klout Bought By Lithium Tech & Why Klout Matters - The Next Web | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it
Klout is reportedly being acquired by the social marketing company Lithium Technologies. Sources tell Re/code that the deal is in the “low nine figures” for the company that help tells users how influential they are.

Why Klout Matters
Interesting development. Klout is the great undervalued asset of the social marketing revolution. Problem with Klout is no one trusts it. When I tried to explain why trust is MOOT to my previous employers they didn't get it.

Trust is moot because in the absence of anything else some metrics always beat no metrics. My previous employer was arguing the "Where's the ROI" argument when the content marketing we created raised their Klout score 292%.

As an Internet marketer debate over whether 2 + 2 = 4 is moot because so what (lol). If something tells me WHY 2 + 2 = 4 or how I can get the social shares and viral lift I need from it then we can make money.

The other point I made is when something goes up 292% ASSUME there was ROI benefit. THAT is the correct debate to have - the attribution debate. I could argue 50% of new business was influenced by our content marketing and they would argue something less.

But at least we would be having the right argument in the right way (lol). M

New Rules for SEO Success in 2013

New Rules for SEO Success in 2013 | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it
Measuring SEO success by your ranking position for your favorite keywords means falling behind the curve.

Here are the most meaningful metrics for SEO for 2013.

1. Focus on Your Keyword Portfolio, Not Rankings

Search engine users are getting smarter and more specific. Today, over 70 percent of searches online contain three or more words in the search query.

2. Create Problem-Solving Content

Creating great content isn't rocket science. If you have trouble coming up with ideas, or you think your industry is too boring, focus instead on solving a customer's problem.

3. Publish Content on Quality Sources

Last year's Penguin update eliminated the value of content published on untrusted websites. This includes low-quality websites, content farms and many "free" PR websites.

4. Distribute and Promote Content through Social Media

Social media is an extremely efficient channel for distributing and promoting your content. This includes content that you publish on your website, as well as content that you publish on highly trusted third-party websites.

Mary makes great points about social benefits of blogging. I loved her idea about putting Facebook likes in the middle of a post since it breaks up the text and is an attention getter. Blogging is the bicycle riding of our content marketing times.

Had someone tell me in a meeting the other day they couldn't write due to a learning disability. Suggested they video blog or use Tumblr instead. We are moving to a more visual time anyway so there are always ways to support your content with blogging even if you can't write.

Angie Mc's curator insight, January 20, 3:09 PM

This article is reason and motivation to keep on blogging. I especially like the idea of blogging as a way to thank my followers and increase engagement on other social media platforms like Twitter.

How Blogging Has Helped My Social Results

From the article...I often get asked how to get more likes on Facebook. While the fastest way to get more fans is to use Facebook advertising (yup I said it) my best results have come from blogging. When I see a spike in my numbers on Facebook, it is almost always right after a blog post I wrote has gotten a lot of exposure.

14 Sources for Content Curation Inspiration | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it

Increasingly, content marketers are employing content curation, the process of finding, organizing and sharing third-party content, as a part of their content marketing efforts.

Earlier this year, my company released a survey with over 400 marketers where we found that 95 percent of marketers these days report that they are curating content in some shape or form.

6 Reasons Your Blog Content Won’t Go Viral

6 Reasons Your Blog Content Won’t Go Viral | Social Media Useful Info | Scoop.it

Here are 6 reasons your content won’t get shared (and it absolutely won’t go viral):

1) No Sharing Buttons (or they’re hidden)

In order to help your content spread, you have to reduce the friction of sharing. In other words, make it very easy to share via Facebook, LinkedIn Twitter, Pinterest and via email.

2) You Have a Boring Headline

Headlines are the first things people see when the visit your website or blog.

3) You’re Not Connected In Social Media and/or You Don’t Share it Yourself

If a tree falls in the forest but no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound? Translated into blogging, this is, “If a post is written but there’s no one around to read or share it, was it really written at all?”.

4) Your Posts Are All About You

I have nothing against you, your company, your products, the benefits of your products, the different colors you offer, your financing plans, your client case studies, your demos or your company events. It’s just that it’s not that interesting for me as a reader.

5) You Don’t Have an Artisanal Attitude to Crafting Content

Blog posts that are produced as “check the box” activities will never be exceptional. In other words, an inspired piece of content can get hundreds or thousands of shares while an uninspired one can get zero.

6) You Don’t Post Often Enough To Become Good At It

Every content creator starts off producing average (or below average) content. Get over that fact.

You have to produce enough content, get enough feedback, see what people respond to and find your own voice…and that requires that you put in some time.

Five Reasons Content Is the New Currency:

Content has meaning beyond the data it contains. It can be shared and exchanged with others to acquire additional knowledge—much like a traditional currency.Financial transactions used to buy status. Now, content buys earned trust. In the sharing economy, bonds are formed through content and utilitarian exchange.Content creates equity much like stocks and bonds. The more subject matter expertise a brand brings to the table, the more business they can create. This expertise is displayed in the form of content. The definition of the term currency is anything that is used as a medium of exchange. Content acts as that catalyst because it brokers an exchange between people with similar interests and goals.

The fact is: advertising on social media is increasing sharply and more than ever people are interacting with brands through their mobile devices.  This article gives some useful tips about how to make the most of your social media content before you start taking it for granted. For instance, knowing where our target is going to be at a specific time on the hour or so after your post can be useful to create a call for action in order to inspire some engagement with them.  Another good tip is about knowing how to design for mobiles first instead for lap/desktops as there are differences on the experience for users. Another relevant tip is with regards understanding that some posts might not work on Androids and IPhones but will on Tablets. Likewise, knowing how to deal with it can generate a lot more traffic than simply assuming your links will work on any platform.

jamie johns's comment, September 22, 2013 5:15 PM
Virgilio, what a cool article to report on! Another great tip mentioned was to check your analytics to ensure you are reaching the appropriate target audience. For example, if you are a company that targets 18-34 year old males, then enabling a mobile application for people to access would be the right move to make. This is because 75% of this age group engage with content through their mobile phones.
Abby Sy Roldan's comment, September 25, 2013 6:11 PM
@Virgilio, A lot of people are accessing social media from their mobile devices. I find this article interesting that there is only 30 minutes of engagement on a post and the engagement decreases. So it's important for the message to relevant to the target.
