The simple fact that Youtube viewers surpass any cable network is a solid proof of the growth in social media. (Youtube is not on this graph).

A useful graph to zoom in different networks and how to use each.

Ammanda Daniher's curator insight, September 7, 2014 11:20 PM

With social media continuing to be a rapidly growing industry, many businesses and people are reaching out to different social media sites in order to promote themselves. Not only has social media become addictive to all age groups, it has also become a great place to get messages across to millions or even billions of people at once. However, this is not always a good thing, as all types of messages are able to spread across the internet like wild fire. Just like any other addictive drug, social media has to ability to grasp and change someone's life in an extremely short period of time.

The real danger of social media | Communications Matters | D&E

The real danger of social media | Communications Matters | D&E | Social Media Tools and Techniques | Scoop.it

I’ve been thinking a lot about this, and have concluded that the danger of social media isn’t just what is said there about you. The real danger of social media is what you don’t say there about yourself....

Obviously danger can lurk in social networks and blogs....

Similarly there is danger in how news media use social media. When news broke of the school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut, news media frantically searching for fresh information discovered a Facebook profile of a New Jersey man with the same name as the alleged shooter and ran with the photo. It was the wrong person.

None of this is new. Gossip columnists and ambitious journalists have used similar tactics for years. What is new is the accelerating pace with which news media use social media for stories and sources....

Thoughtful look at the challenge of real-time news and social media.

Deanna Moore's curator insight, September 12, 2013 8:40 PM

This was a very interesting blog, I agree that social media has made it dangerous for all its active users. It doesnt take much to copy everything you have and pose as someone else, and thats just the beginning... Once they have got your information and added all your friends it wouldnt take long to ruin someones life. Its so easy to obtain information about someone and to post it even if it isnt true. But thats the beauty of the internet, it doesnt matter if its true or not someone will believe it and thats all it takes

What is Digital PR? | Business 2 Community

What is Digital PR? | Business 2 Community | Social Media Tools and Techniques | Scoop.it

Digital PR and Social Media are often thought of as the same thing. Just as media relations is a big part of PR, it is not the entirety of the discipline and so too with social media and Digital PR. PR offline or on is about building awareness, credibility and goodwill. It’s about building a presence and gaining the understanding and support of your stakeholders.

PR has always been about creating a favorable operating climate for a company or organization. Digital PR is no different. It’s about building that presence online, understanding the digital landscape you operate in and developing strong relationships with all the players in your social graph. The techniques include SEO, content development, social media, online newsrooms, websites, blogs and online media coverage....
