Social media marketers are keen to drive engagement but it may not necessarily be a viable strategy. In fact, it comes at a cost.

Great curation by @Guillaume Decugis! I agree with Mark Schaefer here.

A strategy focused on engagement without other goals will automatically lead to failure.

10 tips to speed up your WordPress blog | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
Do you know that you have between three and five seconds to impress the visitors of your blog? If they do not find what they need within that short amount of time, they will leave -- and never come back. Good user experience does not stop at quality design and content. People do not have time to waste; they expect pages to load fast. And search engines like Google may also consider site speed a factor for ranking.

This Is What You Should Pay To Hire A Marketing Company | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
If you want to hire a marketing company, consider both value and price. Buying on value is important. But price is a practical consideration.
Cendrine Marrouat - www.socialmediaslant.com's insight:

Carol Lynn Rivera offers a refreshing perspective on pricing for social media services.

"I base my pricing on the value of the relationship. I qualify you by asking, 'Do I want to work with this person?' and 'Can I help this person market their business successfully?'"

I agree with her: At the end of the day, it's about finding a middle ground where everyone respects one another. And this often leads to a lot more than a paycheck!

It's all about the relationship.

Social Media Publishing is dead (as we know it)

Social Media Publishing is dead (as we know it) | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
Earlier this month, Facebook dropped a bombshell by not only acknowledging that Facebook pages’ organic reach was declining but also by telling us we shouldn’t expect them to recover. Facebook’s VP of Product for Facebook Ads, Brian Boland, went on to explain that this is the new world we live in now, that the same thing happened with search engines before and that we’d better get used to it. It’s true that many platforms go through a similar cycle: first, they present a great free opportunity, then more and more people grab it - decreasing the return for everyone until finally, the platform focuses on those ready to pay for play. It happened with Google Search; it happened with Apps (yes, Apple doesn’t sell ads but others do - such as coincidentally... Facebook). And now that all social media are publicly-traded company with ambitious revenue targets to reach, it will happen to social media as well.
So what does the decline of organic reach on Facebook and social platforms exactly mean on a practical basis? Continue reading →

Social ROI = Return on Insanity

Social ROI = Return on Insanity | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
There’s no way to put this delicately, so I’ll be blunt: quantifying the financial benefits of an enterprise social network is turning your company -- and the entire social technology industry -- into a three ring circus.   The ongoing demands of individual executives, archaic software evaluation processes and an obsessive focus on employees as productivity centers instead of human beings have turned collaboration into chaos, and social analytics into a spectator sport. As vendo Topic: Social Business.
Cendrine Marrouat - www.socialmediaslant.com's insight:

They are starting to pop up on major blogs. These articles debunk the social media ROI myth with brio. The one I picked today is probably the best you will read in a long time.

One quote stands out from the rest: "If we stop selling tickets to the social ROI sideshow, nobody will come." No need to say more, IMHO

Going beyond "I'm sorry" after you've messed up | SmartBlogs | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
Saying sorry isn't enough to right the wrongs caused by companies and individuals -- sincere efforts require seeking forgiveness, taking restorative action.
Cendrine Marrouat - www.socialmediaslant.com's insight:

In this day and age, too many brands think they can get away with a simple "I'm sorry". But as the author of this great article states,

[S]aying sorry is often just another step in the refusal to accept blame and responsibility. We all know the “I’m sorry if you were offended” apology, which has the remarkable trait of condemning the objects of the apology. A twist on that was the ad former New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer used to introduce his would-be comeback last year — an ad acknowledging the failure but immediately pivoting to “But forget that! Look at everything else I did!”

You can write the greatest apology in history, if your following deeds do not reflect it, you are done.

Instead, take extra steps to mend the broken relationship. It works!

Stop Ripping on @JCPenney's. #TweetingWithMittens was brilliant. | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
It seems like a lot of bloggers and mainstream media publications are talking about JC Penney's #TweetingWithMittens stunt on Twitter. Most are saying that it was a misstep. As they complain about it, they fall into the trap perfectly. It's being talked about by journalists, Twitter users, and even other companies trying to get their own clever Tweets into the mix. The jokes on all of them. This campaign worked beautifully. When you consider that they didn't spend millions of dollars to advertise during the Super Bowl and are being talked about as if they had, the ROI is very apparent.

Focusing on the size of your audience is definitely the wrong approach. As I always say, before thinking of gaining new followers, make sure you know the ones who already support you. Build a relationship with them, make them feel like they matter.

What's the point of having 500,000 fans if only 10 or 20 pay attention to what you do? Focus on how you can change a few lives instead.

"You did a great job. This is exactly what I was hoping for. I wouldn't change a thing. You completely nailed it, it's fabulous." Of course, that's not feedback, really. It's applause. Applause is great.
Cendrine Marrouat - www.socialmediaslant.com's insight:

All successful products were born out of a desire to help and make life easier for others. Their creator(s) worked hard and most importantly, listened to what their audience had to say — positive and negative comments alike.

“[I]f you want to improve, you should actively seek feedback. And that feedback, if it’s more than just carping, will be constructive,” says Seth Godin. “It will clearly and generously lay out ways you can more effectively delight your customers and create a remarkable experience that leads to ever more customers.”

Never shy away from feedback. Instead, seek it every step of the way!
