Courtesy rules apply on LinkedIn too

From socialmediaslant.com

I love LinkedIn. This platform has opened more doors for me than Facebook ever will. However, there is one feature I cannot stand: generic invitations.
Cendrine Marrouat - cendrinemarrouat.com:

This post was triggered by a recent series of interactions with potential new connections on LinkedIn. I feel that we are losing touch with basic courtesy rules. As such, it's important to talk about it.

A computer / mobile screen should not be used as an excuse to bypass the basic rules of relationships.

LinkedIn Groups: A quick primer for small businesses

From socialmediaslant.com

Generating 200 conversations per minute, LinkedIn Groups can be a treasure-trove of information and networking, a hotbed of self-promotion and spam…or a ghost town. Or all at once.
Yeldemo Group's curator insight, June 12, 2015 7:46 PM

LinkedIn works via active participation.  However, as a job/employment site it has the potential to be harmful to majority of its users should many subjects or even the quality of articles covered were to be given candid, honest responses.

One concern often discussed in Networking groups is the harvesting of job seekers resumes by unrepeatable recruiters.  A second though unintended consequence is the opportunity for hiring managers or generalist to preemptively filter out qualified minority job candidates.  This mitigates the old "shameful" practice of discovering the race of a candidate at the interview and having to dismiss their candidacy under the guise of... you name the mired of old excuses...

This is how you use your employees to build brand advocacy...

From www.fastcompany.com

Daniel Roth, Linkedin's executive editor, shares what he's discovered from the 50,000 posts on the site published every week.

Honestly, this article is a gem!

Roth talks about how Dell (one of my favorite brands) has used its employees to build advocacy via content that matters to them. This is almost unheard of in the corporate world.

Executives, HR directors, PR pros see only potential pitfalls—a vocal employee is a poachable employee; someone sharing sharp takes can also share sensitive information; what if employees are boring or, worse, interesting? Better to just to keep the barn door firmly shut.

The approach seems safe. But it’s not. Staying silent means not being part of the dynamic business conversation that is happening everywhere around the world.

7 Reasons Why I Won't Accept Your Linkedin Invitation

From www.linkedin.com

Last year, after the umpteenth generic invitation to connect on LinkedIn had reached my inbox, I decided to write a rant-like article on the topic. Since then, these invitations have continued, but with less frequency. It's an improvement.

With that said, many people still seem unwilling to use LinkedIn the right way. Connecting there means making other professionals in your field aware of your presence. You have to do it right if you want others to take you seriously.

Michael O'Donnell has good reminders for all of us in this article!
