But don’t take social media too lightly. To get results, you need to learn to use it effectively. Sadly, many freelancing professionals fail to get the kind of results they would like from social media. That’s because they make embarrassing mistakes.

In this post, I’ll list twenty-one embarrassing mistakes that I’ve seen on Twitter, LinkedIn, Google+, and other social media sites. You can use this list as a handy checklist to make sure that your social media presence is all that it should be.

Top 25 Social Media Pet Peeves Resumebear Online Resume

Top 25 Social Media Pet Peeves Resumebear Online Resume | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it

What is your social media pet peeve? Mine is people who just post quotes all day long, thinking they are being inspirational. What’s yours?

The number and variety of responses I got was amazing, so I thought I’d digest them into categories. The value, here, is to help each of us understand what irritates other people in the realm of social media. Not that we have to please everyone, but if there are a lot of folks who are irritated by a specific behavior (ahem…auto-direct messages on Twitter), we might think twice about engaging in that behavior via our personal or business social media channels.

So…here they are! 25 social media pet peeves contributed by the readers of SocMedSean.

5 Ways to Use Content Curation for Marketing and Tools to Do It - Forbes

5 Ways to Use Content Curation for Marketing and Tools to Do It - Forbes | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
Content curation is the hottest topic among marketers these days, but few companies understand what content curation is and how it can help build a brand and a business.

In simplest terms, content curation is a form of content marketing where a publisher (in this case, a small business) editorially collects the best content related to a specific niche and targeted to a specific audience then enhances that content by adding personal opinions and expertise. That enhanced content delivers added value to the target audience who consumes it after it’s published.

Social media practices gone wrong: Content scraping

Social media practices gone wrong: Content scraping | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
You may remember my recent case study on bad social media manners. Well, here is another one for you.

Earlier this week, as I was checking my daily Google Alerts emails, I noticed a title that looked strangely similar to the one I had used for one of my recent social media articles on Examiner.com.

I clicked the link and found out that a blogger had actually copied and pasted this article verbatim on his blog. No source was quoted. He had just included the signature I add at the bottom of each of my articles.

My first reaction was to leave a comment under the stolen content. I explained to the blogger that he could only quote an extract and would have to link to the rest of the story on Examiner.com.

Here is what happened in screenshots. Click each picture to see it in full size in a new tab.

LinkedIn Generates $1.30 Per User Per Hour; 21 Times More Than Facebook | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it

We’ve seen how valuable LinkedIn is to professionals for developing connections and furthering their business, but you probably didn’t realise just how valuable you are to the professional social networking site, and just how well it’s doing because of this.

Forbes’ cover story on how LinkedIn became the business it is now is well worth a read, but what really stands out is just how successful it has become because of this. After taking ComScore’s Web-usage data and public financial filings, Forbes’ George Anders calculated that for every hour that each user spends on the site: LinkedIn generates $1.30 while Facebook, with over 900 million members and counting, only generates $0.06, roughly 21 times less than LinkedIn.

Social Media Experts – How to spot the fake ones

Social Media Experts – How to spot the fake ones | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it

The rising popularity of social media has led to growing recognition of its use to companies and the need to incorporate social media into business plans. But businesses often have little experience with this new medium. Consequently, there is a growing demand for people with expertise in social media. But unfortunately there is not enough supply of real experts. There has been an increasing number of people claiming to be experts. Gary Vaynerchu even commented that 99.5% of social media experts are clowns. Not everyone who claims to be a social media expert truly is one. There are a lot of fakes around who claim they are experts but in fact know little about social media or business. It’s important to be able to identify the fakes so you can avoid being a victim of a fake expert. But how do you distinguish the ‘real deal’ from the ‘fakes’? Let’s look at some key indicators…

How to do Social Media Marketing

How to do Social Media Marketing | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
The question on everybody’s lips these days is “How do I make social media work for bringing in more business”. It’s quite amazing to see how these platforms have matured in such a short amount of time and how small businesses can foot it with the big ones by creating a huge online presence on a micro budget.

Once the perfect ground for poking, tagging and retweeting, the likes of Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest have grown up to be extremely effective sales and marketing tools known to the humble entrepreneur.

At the same time as their meteoric rise in popularity, the competition to be seen, heard and even noticed on these social media sites, has increased triple fold.

The common trend I see is people trying to be everywhere and anywhere in the hopes of attracting more business, leads and traffic.

It’s a lot like watching people throw wet toilet paper at a ceiling and seeing what sticks. In other words – a pointless waste of time!

JustRetweet is a credit-based Twitter sharing and Twitter following service that allows small businesses and entrepreneurs to get more exposure on the micro-blogging and social networking site. Meet Valentine Belonwu, the founder of the site, in this exclusive interview.

Cendrine Marrouat: Hello Valentine, thank you for answering my questions. As a starter, tell us a little bit about you.

Valentine Belonwu: Thanks for giving me this opportunity Cendrine. My name is Valentine, I am from Nigeria. I am an entrepreneur and blogger.

CM: What gave you the idea of creating JustRetweet?

VB: In the early 2010, I started a blog site called BigMoneyWeb and as of then, I was having some challenges to get other bloggers to share my blog posts. BizSugar was the only site that really helped me to increase the traffic to my blog. I needed to have more people to share my content anytime I published a new post and that was the main reason why I decided to launch JustRetweet.

How Sony Became a Pinterest Rock Star | Social Media Examiner

How Sony Became a Pinterest Rock Star | Social Media Examiner | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it
Callan Green, senior social media specialist at Sony Electronics, never thought she would want a pair of leather pants.

“But I saw enough pins on Pinterest that I thought, ‘Oh my gosh, I have to own them,’ and I went out and bought some.”

It was the fall of 2011 and she was discovering firsthand the power of Pinterest to drive sales.

The image-based, pinboard-sharing social media site launched in March 2010 is now the third-largest social network, behind Facebook and Twitter.

In March 2012, it tallied 2.3 billion page impressions to over 4 million unique visitors a day.

“We were all using [Pinterest] personally,” said Green of the social media team at Sony Electronics, “and realized the power of the platform to drive people’s interest in purchasing.”

And while Google+ was heralded by fans at the start as a Facebook competitor, a year later it has yet to prove itself as a significant threat in the realm of social media.

But I contend that Google+ is more than people expect.

Five Things More Important than Facebook Page Engagement | Social Media Today

Five Things More Important than Facebook Page Engagement | Social Media Today | Business in a Social Media World | Scoop.it

There’s a large misconception that engagement is the most significant aspect of a Facebook business page. This common message is so far-reaching that most online sources claim that high page engagement will result in increased brand awareness, stronger customer relationships and hopefully, perked profits. While engagement is imperative, it’s not everything. Every marketer and page administrator knows the importance and value of engagement, but few recognize what other components take precedence.
