With very little difference in its concept, I agree with article author Jordan Crook that unfortunately, Facebook probably won't get anywhere in the war against Snapchat with this new app..

I've been really annoyed that Facebook wouldn't let me share GIFs that made me laugh like a fat cow to my friends. Luckily, Giphy has a work-around!

 

Giphy is a search engine dedicated to GIFs only. And they have just launched a link shortener that automatically attaches your GIF and works on... Facebook and Twitter! 

 

I predict many hours of GIF-procrastination!

What we can learn from this:

- communication on Twitter follows the general social media trend with the uber importance of visual media (photos)

- Tweeting regularly (6-20 mins.) brings follower... but not engagement!

- most used interfaces to tweet are Twitter interface and Hootsuite.

 

Where is Buffr in this table? Also, I'm wondering: with engagement becoming more important than the size of your community, how do you succeed on Twitter?

Early last year we learned that one hour of YouTube is uploaded every second. It was a bracing reminder of just how many people are spending their time online simultaneously.

 

Created by rewards site Qmee, the infographic "Online In 60 Seconds" is a pie chart that shows off the sheer amount of online activity that takes place every single minute. The amount of YouTube videos uploaded has already increased from January 2012's 60 hours per minute to 72. Additionally, over 1.8 million things are liked on Facebook, and 278 thousand bon mots tweeted. Not depicted in the chart: the amount of work that is going undone while all of these items are being viewed.

Interesting paper on where apps are heading to. In terms of both data organization and design. One interesting point is the importance of apps notifications: instead of opening the app and reaching for the information, the information is making its way to the user.

Very useful infographic summarizing the problems with content that isn't being shared and how to solve that problem.  I like the good practical tips for creating more "emotionally charged" content.   The other main points:


  • Lack of emotional appeal – people share content that generates curiosity, amazement, interest, astonishment, uncertainty, admiration and humor.
  • Not “Share Worthy” – people want to share it, it’s easy to share, it provides value, and it’s going to draw attention to those who share it.
  • Bad Timing – find the times of the day, week, season or event that the content is in demand and popular.
  • Poor Design – the layout, colors and visual appeal matters when it comes to sharable content. An investment in design is an investment in the likelihood it will be shared.
  • Poor Distribution – this is probably the one we see least deployed… distribute and promote your content across sites where it’s going to reach a large audience.

- Double check your profile photo with an impartial friend

- Get creative and effective in your bio

- Remain lighthearted when you message people

- Log in when people are on, like on lunch breaks or after 5 PM

Two things, for Facebook especially:

 

- consider using hashtags. I have noticed they give an extra boost already.

 

- FORGET about these general time table and use the new Facebook Insights to figure out what's the best wtime to reach YOUR community. As it grows, you may find that optimum time changes so make sure you monitor it :)

A short note on adoption rates of social media for the brands. In general, always go to where your customers are but pay a special attention to: Google + and Pinterest.

 

- While Pinterest is much talked about by marketers, there is still great room for newcomers, therefore more customer interaction. 

- Google + is expanding extremely fast, but businesses aren't following that much. Starting a business page on it may be a good fit to be an early adopter, independently of the SEO benefits.
