Great tips on duration..a resource that I'm finding to be valuable.
If an alert "pops out" and draws our attention, we can easily and quickly notice it even if we are not looking right at it. If a driver can quickly glance at her GPS system and tell that she is approaching a left turn, she will more effectively use her GPS than if comprehending the display requires several glances. A complex diagram, like a subway map, is unlikely to be fully comprehended at a glance, but in a well designed map, the viewer has adequate information for planning his next glance, and for piecing together his route.
The question of what our visual systems can perceive in a glance would be boring, except that processing is not uniform throughout the visual field. As a result, information available in a particular glance typically differs from the information available in the next. This phenomenon is precisely what forces us to glance around to begin with.
The evolving relationship between humans and machines is the key theme of Gartner, Inc.'s "Hype Cycle for Emerging Technologies, 2013." Gartner has chosen to feature the relationship between humans and machines due to the increased hype around smart machines, cognitive computing and the Internet of Things. Analysts believe that the relationship is being redefined through emerging technologies, narrowing the divide between humans and machines.
The surge in big data, analytics and cognitive computing approaches will provide decision support and automation to humans, and awareness and intelligence to machines. These technologies can be used to make both humans and things smarter. NLQA technology can improve a virtual customer service representative. NLQA can also be used by doctors to research huge amounts of medical journals and clinical tests to help diagnose an ailment or choose a suitable treatment plan. These supporting technologies are foundational for both humans and machines as we move forward to a digital future and enterprises should consider quantum computing, prescriptive analytics, neurobusiness, NLQA, big data, complex event processing, in-memory database management system (DBMS), cloud computing, in-memory analytics and predictive analytics.

We are very pleased to announce that the Internet Archive has joined the OpenGLAM Network.
The Internet Archive has been one of the leading lights in the movement to get more freely available copies of public domain works online. It has also been pioneering the attempt to archive the internet, keeping a record of millions of pages for future generations.
We’re looking forward to collaborating with the Internet Archive around the development of our tools for digital scholarship and crowdsourced data enrichment as well as working with them to surface more of the wonderful works found in their vast libraries through projects like The Public Domain Review.
If you were wondering how likely it is that news curation may become a key strategy for offering quality local news, you should check out this three-year old project called The Breaking News Network.
BNN, founded by Pat Kitano, already covers 350 cities worldwide by curating the most interesting local news stories from indigenous blogs and RSS feeds and having a unique focus on supporting community voices and interests.
BNN, in its own words is an active, community-sourced and locally driven information network, that uses curation to provide just-in-time relevant info and news to its communities. From the official site: "The Breaking News Network delivers social media sourced news and information to over 350 cities and neighborhoods worldwide.
We’re unique to local publishing because we curate and publish the most interesting media and blog feeds in each city (that means less petty crime and accidents, more events, opinions and commentary) to create an aggregate real time ticker tape of literally everything happening in a city.
Every city’s WordPress based website (example: BreakingSFNews.com) broadcasts more than just the usual daily news; it curates news by category: Things to Do, Sports, Food, Culture, etc. so users can find breaking news by topic of interest.
We utilize the curation and presentation tools by Rebelmouse to display content in a visual format.
We deliver localized news streams through Twitter and Facebook for each city and have amassed over 400,000 fans/followers who appreciate our real time local content."
One interesting aspect of The Breaking News Network is its strategic positioning, throughout all of its instances, as a collector and amplifier for the news coming from relevant local institutions and communities providing them with extra visibility and a very relevant context to reach out to interested people.
From Journalisaccelerator.com: "When BNN was launched three years ago to give voice to community causes, Kitano brought a unique knowledge from early experiments using Twitter (2006 – 2009) and social media to develop hyperlocal community information networks for the real estate market.
Focusing on social at the outset, Kitano was “cobbling together” segmented lists on Twitter before Twitter had even created “lists.” (For context, Twitter launched in July of 2006.)
Kitano sees BNN providing a shared social channel – one community, one voice, one cause at a time – with promise of doing good for others by supporting civic groups, local causes and arts organizations."
Here, in more detail, some of the community support they provide: "We provide free access for local institutions to our 350+ Twitter feeds via our unique Community Retweet Program. We also provide this access to local politicians and local media so they can broadcast their most important messages to our communities.
We create national campaigns and build brand advocate networks for good causes.
We create unique ways for our readers to interact with their local institutions, like the National Aquarium and Chicago’s International Beethoven Festival."

Conversations on Twitter create networks with identifiable contours as people reply to and mention one another in their tweets. These conversational structures differ, depending on the subject and the people driving the conversation. Six structures are regularly observed: divided, unified, fragmented, clustered, and inward and outward hub and spoke structures. These are created as individuals choose whom to reply to or mention in their Twitter messages and the structures tell a story about the nature of the conversation.

Businesses can avoid the pitfalls of social media with a new guide from Gray Plant Mooty lawyers and the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development.
Many of the risks — copyright infringement, trademark issues, privacy violations — existed before companies took to Facebook and Twitter. But the new technology and prolific use of social networks has made it "a lot easier to have those potential liability concerns," said lawyer Mike Cohen, one of the guide's four authors at the Minneapolis-based law firm.

After researching over a thousand Twitter Tools for the Twitter Tools Book I came across many tools that tried to add value by presenting a different way to visualize or analyze your tweets, the people in your network, and the tweets from the people in your network.
Many tools tried to add value and failed. At least they tried. The following tools, however, stand out in my mind as exceptional or entertaining and I recommend you check them out if you want to analyze and visualize your activity on Twitter.
In a nutshell, online reputation management, or ORM as it’s known, is the practice of making people and businesses look their best on the Internet. To accomplish that, people need to control their online search results because they frequently contain inaccurate, misleading or outdated material which can adversely influence how web searchers view them. But controlling search results isn’t the only goal of online reputation management. Since where someone lives, their income and their marital status all affect the perception of a person, it’s important to prevent private information from being made public, as well.
Online reputation management became necessary with the advent of social networks, online forums, blogs and other forms of online communication and information sharing. But since current laws are insufficient to prevent total strangers from damaging your online reputation or harvesting your private information, online reputation management is now critical. Reputation.com has provided online reputation management and Internet privacy protection to clients in more than 100 countries since 2006. As a leader in ORM, Reputation.com enjoys widespread recognition for its innovative products and services and is a proud recipient of the 2011 World Economic Forum Technology Pioneer Award.
Small businesses, frequently strapped for both time and cash, often need their marketing dollars to work double time—using the same resources to attract new business and retain loyal customers.
Online marketing service provider Constant Contact conducted a survey in October 2012 of 1,305 small businesses and nonprofits from its customer base to see how different tactics and channels balanced customer acquisition with customer retention.
Respondents were most likely to say that their website struck an effective balance: 77% said the site was well-suited both to engaging existing customers and attracting new ones. A majority of respondents felt similarly about their blog (69% said it was effective at both tasks) and their social media marketing efforts (60%).
This is an excellent tool.
