Executives demand to know the Return on Investment (ROI) of social media like Twitter, Facebook, or YouTube before allowing employees to use them at work. Ye... HYPOCRISY It's ridiculous that executives require marketers to calculate ROI (Return on Investment) on one form of real-time communications: Social media like Twitter, Facebook, or YouTube. Yet they happily pay for other real-time communications devices for employees like Blackberrys, iPhones, and iPads without a proven ROI. Often, the first question I am asked at my talks is about ROI. So I turn the question back to the audience as you will see in this very short video shot on location at recent gigs in Amsterdam, Bahrain, Baltimore, Barcelona, Boston, Buffalo, Cleveland, Istanbul, Miami, Rotterdam, Stockholm, and Washington DC.

Unofficial Guide to Facebook for business... Don’t bury your head in the sand, complaints will happen – react quickly and take your customers offline to add that personal touch. A customer who has been dealt with efficiently in a bad situation will be more likely to shout your praises afterwards. If you don’t have the expertise in social media internally, recruit it or use a specialist agency – examine their portfolios beforehand. Working with an agency or individual who already has industry specific experience, for instance, could be invaluable.

Turns out both liberals and conservatives have issues with Internet censorship, and 10 members of Congress have now proposed a new approach to online piracy. Oh, and they want feedback before they write the bill. The two-page draft of the plan is being issued so that "the public can provide us with feedback and counsel before the proposal is formally introduced in the House and the Senate." And clearly, feedback would be useful. Can such a "follow the money" plan do anything about noncommercial piracy, for instance? Should it try to do so? But the whole shift in tone marked by the new approach looks far more promising than anything likely to come out of the mess that is SOPA. Who's behind all of this sweet sanity? Senators Wyden (D-OR), Cantwell (D-WA), Moran (R-KS), and Warner (D-VA); Reps. Chaffetz (R-UT), Campbell (R-CA), Doggett (D-TX), Eshoo (D-CA), Issa (R-CA), and Lofgren (D-CA).

Social marketing used to be just that thing you did; like politicians, business owners would scout the neighborhood, introduce their services, shake hands and kiss babies.

Despite increasing numbers of customers using Twitter to publicly complain about brands, the vast majority of companies respond in the exact same way….with the quiet of contempt. Amazing, when I have a problem I always go to Twitter first. It's worked with AT&T, Verizon, Inclusing our local electric company. Maybe, I'm spoiled but it seems to me companies really should start paying attention... what do you think?

Are you wondering why your social media efforts aren't working? Social media success sometimes appears arbitrary. Go deep, not wide: Don’t try to be active on every social network out there. Instead, focus on becoming great at one or two platforms where you’re most likely to engage your prospects. Once you’ve mastered those, you can add more to your plate.

I don’t care if it’s a Facebook killer or if it will wipe Twitter out of the game; I don’t have any stock invested in any of these companies. What I’m invested in is the future of my clients, their brand and my business, no matter which corporate entity ends up on top.

A lot of 'strategies' are just wishlists says Jack Springman - which does not bode well for many social implementations. Learning from the past History has shown that technology implementations deliver greatest value when they serve business strategy. As tempting as it may be to create a social media strategy, it will be valueless unless firmly grounded in a higher level strategy that enables prioritisation. If such foundations do not exist, the chances of social media implementations not meeting desired objectives are much increased.

Marketing is, in short, a world unto its own. What means does it have of realizing new ideas? What power does it have of engendering real innovation and change? What understanding can it truly offer? None or little, if it is not self-aware, self-reflective, and self-critical.

WASHINGTON Nonprofit and governmental organizations are winding up social mediaheavy campaigns to promote HIV/AIDS awareness during the week of World AIDS Day. Scary when you consider " The organization also hoped to reach a wide audience through the effort, but especially consumers age 25 and under because they account for a major share of new HIV cases."

Comparing social media in the U.S. to that in China brings to mind the fact the American government has yet to chime in on social media. Soon, it will. With #SOPA #PIRACY concerns this topic should be taken very seriously. What this means for those of us in America, and other Western countries for that matter, is that only now are the lawsuits beginning. Our governments have not reacted to how we use the social web because, for the most part, to date no one has been hurt. But as more businesses and individuals become more knowledgeable and savvy with how social media works, who uses it and for what reason, more will find legal reasons to legislate how we use it. Expect court cases to be in the news in the coming months and years that not only tell us how we can use social media, but how we can’t.

I created and then abandoned a Twitter account many months ago. I had virtually zero reputation outside of Twitter when I started. And it wasn’t an account that became popular by following everyone back or using other tricks. As you build your reputation as a leader, your reputation will begin to take on a life of its own.
