In Bryan Singer’s ‘H+,’ a possible blueprint for dramatic digital series

In Bryan Singer’s ‘H+,’ a possible blueprint for dramatic digital series | Social-Media-Storytelling | Scoop.it
NEW YORK — How much does a good Web series cost?

That’s been an evolving but constant question as digital series multiply. Increasingly, Internet-based series aspire to television-level quality, while trying to get by on Web-sized budgets...

Enter “H+,” a digital series produced by Bryan Singer, the director of “The Usual Suspects” and “X-Men,” as well as the executive producer of one of those high-price TV dramas, “House.” The sci-fi “H+” is an ambitious, 48-part show with clear intentions of raising the bar on digital series and bringing a higher standard of production value to the Web.

“There were always different forms of short comedic programming (online), but I primarily come out of narrative drama or action adventure,” says Singer. “So for me, I wanted us to try to explore something more cinematic in the Internet space — something that would be very stylized, with a high production value, but at the same time be structured for the Internet.”

The series, produced by Warner Premiere, debuted on YouTube in August and updates with a new 4- to 7-minute episode every Wednesday, a pace that will take its run into January. Its production budget was less than $2 million, a fairly remarkable sum considering the series is 255 minutes in total and includes action scenes, visual effects and international settings.

By stretching every dollar of its budget and managing to achieve a production value far above most Web fare, “H+” could provide a blueprint for an industry striving to make hits with peanuts...

Moteur de recherche Facebook : le référencement du futur ?

Moteur de recherche Facebook : le référencement du futur ? | Social-Media-Storytelling | Scoop.it

Modern Mythology: Participants Wanted!

Modern Mythology: Participants Wanted! | Social-Media-Storytelling | Scoop.it

Get involved in collaborative storytelling in "Legends of Eden":

"For those of you who have been following my posts here for the last few months, you may have noticed I've been talking a lot about how technology has transformed the publishing industry, and how transmedia storytelling has broken down the barriers between a story and it's audience.

But I haven't really gone into the specifics about how this can be put into practice."

Peter Usagi is going to develop and write a transmedia project with the audience - and you can be a part of it:

"Peter Usagi: As a storyteller—if I’ve managed to do my job—I realize my audience is as engaged and emotionally wrapped up in my characters, as I’ve been after creating them. It would be foolish of me to stomp my feet and argue with them if they were unhappy with an ending, or if a character’s reaction wasn’t believable.

Lucas, Tolkin, and Roddenberry; they might be frustrated by legions of fans that have encyclopedic knowledge of their fictional worlds. But they shouldn’t be. Even the most capable writer needs help, and every well told story needs an attentive audience."

Lady Gaga decided to take an app-based route to help promote the release of her new album.  I think this is a smart way to interact with fans.  Though, I have seen artists do this before, and it never really turns out as well as they planned.

Novels as the Driving Platform

Perhaps counterintuitively, novels are the story platform most inherently suited for Transmedia expansion.  Unlike movies and videogames, which are often tightly plotted by design, novels have enormous scope to provide character detail, story universe specificity and expository backstory.  Because the experience of reading a book is more leisurely by nature, the reader tolerates the introduction of details that may not seem immediately relevant to the plot – an excellent way of introducing future Transmedia story elements “by the back door” so to speak.
