Canadian Seniors Are Suddenly Wealthy!

Canadian Seniors Are Suddenly Wealthy! | Social Media Snacks | Scoop.it
Regardless of whether 5 percent or 9 percent of seniors live in poverty, it's just not true that Canadian Seniors are suddenly wealthy!
Marianne Lalonde's insight:

A recent Bank of Montreal report said that the wealth of Canadian seniors has quadrupled since 1984.

A follow-up article in Maclean’s asked: “Why are we doing so much to try to help seniors when they’re already the wealthiest generation in history?”

Irresponsible articles such as this ignore the fact far too many seniors have no assets to speak of at all.

Whether the poverty rate for seniors is 5 percent or 9 percent, far too many Canadian seniors live in or near poverty levels and it is irresponsible to suggest cutting back senior pensions across the board.

This global trade agreement, promoted by the United States and the European Union is expected to promote privatization of public services in countries across the world, and ease regulations in other sectors.

Is this 'free trade'? Forcing local governments to privatize their water has nothing to do with freedom, but it does have something to do with capitalism’s influence on government.

Trees too close to hydro lines, report on ice storm concludes | Social Media Snacks | Scoop.it
Panel says Toronto Hydro should work with the city to find a balance between their goals of maximizing protection for power lines and maintaining the city’s aesthetics
Marianne Lalonde's insight:

Report on ice storm concludes trees are too close to hydro lines.

Last Decembers' ice storm left 300,000 without power and many were forced to celebrate Christmas in the dark. Toronto Hydro restored power to 86 per cent of customers within 72 hours.

“Most of the damage from the storm was due to the trees,” said Miki Deric, partner at Davies Consulting.

Toronto must decide between options; a reduction of the tree canopy, or moving some power lines underground and to front yards from back yards.

Canadians Accused of Having No Self-Control | Social Media Snacks | Scoop.it

Marianne Lalonde's insight:

Harvard economist David Laibson said the problem Canadians have with saving for retirement is a ’Self-control problem’ and education alone is not likely to bring about any change.

He went on to say that Canada's Financial Literacy Plan is doomed to fail because Financial education has “shockingly little” impact on consumer behavior.

I’m not sure how Mr. Liabson sees Canada’s Financial Literacy Plan relating to providing information to consumers ‘at the time of decision making’.

Canada’s Literacy Plan does not consist of a law that requires retailers to educate shoppers about the cost of borrowing just before they take on new debt – a sort of ‘reading consumers their rights just before they make a credit purchase'.

How To Buy The Right House

How To Buy The Right House | Social Media Snacks | Scoop.it
How To Buy The Right House. So you’re about to buy a house. Not only is buying a home one of the largest purchases of your life, it’s also one you’re going to have to live with for some time. After
Marianne Lalonde's insight:

How To Buy The Right House. So you’re about to buy a house. Not only is buying a home one of the largest purchases of your life, it’s also one you’re going to have to live with for some time. After all, you can’t just return a home if you have a change of heart or find it's not quite to your liking.

TIPS TO AVOID BUYERS REMORSE:

MAKE A LIST

Before you start shopping for a home, make a list of which features you’d like to have and which features you must have. Give your Realtor a copy of this list and ask to only see homes that have all of the features on your “must have” list.

VISIT THE HOME SEVERAL TIMES

Have you ever made a purchase only to discover later that it’s wasn’t really what you thought it was? That can happen with a house too. What you believe to be the perfect home the first time around may not seem so perfect on the next visit. Make sure to tour any home you’re considering at least twice to make sure the first impression is a lasting one.

STICK TO YOUR BUDGET

No matter how much you love a home, if you can’t afford it you won’t be happy in it. Remember, once you buy a home you’ll need money for things like repairs, upgrades, insurance and furniture etc... You don’t want to end up sitting in a camp chair in your living room!

ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT THE HOUSE

  • What repairs are needed?
  • What are the energy costs of the home?
  • Are the appliances staying or going?
  • When was the last time the roof was replaced?
  • Do you have the seller’s disclosure report?

CHOOSE YOUR REALTOR WISELY

Purchasing a home is a stressful time in the best of circumstances. Throw in an inexperienced real estate agent and you’re in for a long and rather unpleasant experience. Make sure you use an experienced Realtor who is familiar with the area you want to buy into.
