Search is getting more social. Anyone who is watching the way that Google and Bing present their results and determine rankings on keywords can see this.

 

Social media sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest (not to mention Google+, which is trying to seamlessly tie in search with social) are all becoming more prominent in search while continuing to improve their own internal search engines.

 

These two facts are pushing us towards a collision course where search marketing and social marketing are becoming the same overall concept.

On May 5th, LinkedIn will celebrate its 11th birthday.It announced last month that 300 million people had signed up for the professional social network. This evening, LinkedIn will report earnings for first quarter of this year, which analysts expect to surpass the company’s own guidance.

 

Despite all these positive signs, there is one question that has dogged the network for the majority of its history: What is LinkedIn actually for?Establishing a clearer identity is crucial to LinkedIn’s future. 

 

While more than 300 million people have joined, LinkedIn’s most recent filings suggest that the number of people who log in at least once a month is probably closer to 200 million. Growth in US monthly desktop users and desktop pageviews both slipped into negative territory last year (though visitors from mobile are climbing)....

Google also addresses (and condemns) SEO efforts more frequently than toner engines. But SEO isn't just for Google, and really isn't just for search engines, either. Every social media network has some type of search functionality.

 

As social media usage has risen, so has the volume of searches on these networks (YouTube is the second largest search engine behind Google and Twitter receives 2.1 billion queries per day).

Social media can impact SEO simply by encouraging natural link building. Think about it? Google doesn't want you to manufacture back links to manipulate page rank. But it's OK for others to share your content, right? Using social media so that others can find and share your content is natural and should demonstrate what Google wants to see. Of course, people will abuse that, too. Which is why engagement is key; develop and nurture relationships so there's always a genuine connection.

I found many of the statistics in this article to be very intriguing.  For starters, I did not realize that Twitter's follower base has now grown to over half that of Facebook's.  Furthermore, I had no idea that users spend close to the same amount of time on each site, because to me, Twitter is more of a place to simply post things, while Facebook is more of a place to browse.  Next, I was not surprised to hear that about 80% of Pinterest users are women, however, I was surprised when it stated that about half of the total number of users have children!  Last but not least, I personally have not heard much chatter about Google+, so it was surprising to find out that its follower count increases by about 33% each year!  All in all, it was a very interesting article to read through!

So I'm one of those people who have missed the real-time search results in Google, so this is a first +1 for Bing. Second is that I've been using Bing more and more lately as Google search occasionally crashes for me in Chrome. Yes, Chrome. Yes, irony.

Frustrating lack of support from Google, but considering it's all free, I certainly can't complain about Chrome's speed. I'd really prefer to use Firefox, but it's consistently unstable. At least Chrome's issues are intermittent. :)
