Clear your Google search history now

You've probably heard that starting March 1, Google is going to unify all your privacy data from your various accounts, such as Gmail, YouTube and Web searches. What that means, in part, is that your past Web searches could become part of a big pot of information that's out there for Google to use to establish better profiles of its users for advertisers.

Don't want that? It's easy to clear your Google Web search history, but you'll need to do it with haste. Starting Thursday, the privacy policy goes into effect, although it's under fire, both in the U.S. and abroad. Despite the concerns, Google has said that the changes will not bring any new or additional data collection, and that most of its product-specific policies already allow information to be shared across product lines when users sign into their Google accounts.

How Social Media Changed SEO

How Social Media Changed SEO | Social Media Scooped! | Scoop.it
The impact of social media has changed the way SEO is being conducted and webmasters now need to play catch up again.

The sure sign of a disruptive technology is that it changes everything in ways which are hard to anticipate and produces outcomes which are difficult to predict. Social media has been creeping upon us for some time but it is only this year that it has become so entangled with SEO as to now be an integral part of the way a site gets its content ranked and increases its traffic.
The socialisation of content which began with content sharing in Facebook has, with Google Plus, become an imperative. Whereas in the past a webmaster could get away with a good SEO strategy and a certain amount of automatic social bookmarking of content, these days, he faces the struggle to create content which is of sufficiently high quality to engage interest in social media networks and the pressure to get that content seen as widely as possible.

Pinterest for Brands: 5 Hot Tips

Pinterest for Brands: 5 Hot Tips | Social Media Scooped! | Scoop.it

Have you begun using Pinterest as a marketing channel? How does it compare to other social sites?

Some companies using it well include Whole Foods, Lands End, and the Daily Grommet.

The social media space continues to evolve. Pinterest, a site launched in March 2010 that describes itself as an online pinboard to organize and share things you love, recently emerged as one of the top 10 websites within the Hitwise Social Networking & Forums category. The invitation only site received nearly 11 million total visits during the week ending December 17, 2011, almost 40 times the number of total visits versus just six months ago (week ending June 18, 2011).

Google says social network has 90M users - CNN.com | Social Media Scooped! | Scoop.it
Google's infant social network experienced a recent growth spurt, with more than 90 million members.

(CNN) -- Google's infant social network experienced a recent growth spurt.
Google+ has more than 90 million registered users, Google CEO Larry Page said during the company's earnings presentation on Thursday. That more than doubles the 40 million that Google reported in October.
"We're very excited about the growth we've had, and we've certainly seen a tremendous number of people added every day," Page said. "That notion of identity is a deep part of what we're doing."
Google launched its social network last June. Since then, it has added toolbars and other buttons on its websites to aggressively promote the service. Google stirred up controversy last week when it began giving prominent placement to Google+ pages in results delivered by its search engine.
On average, Google engineers have introduced a new feature related to Google+ every day since its launch, Page said.

The New Face of Web Marketing: SEO, Social Media, Content and Mobile

The New Face of Web Marketing: SEO, Social Media, Content and Mobile | Social Media Scooped! | Scoop.it
Web marketing continues to evolve, and as new technologies ranging from iPhone apps to cloud networks continue to revolutionize the business and consumer landscapes, the role of content, social media, mobile and search marketing will change as well.

Bob Speyer and Janette Leon-Speyer argue in a blog post for Web Success Team that search engine optimization and web marketing have become a four-pronged strategy involving mobile, on-site SEO, content creation and social media. So what does this mean for your average marketing grunt? Work. Keyword placement, code-to-content ratio and Google compliance are all still relevant, but the industry is trending toward an integrated strategy with an added focus on social content. Sites that boast consistent social engagement and activity will not only indicate and drive traffic, but they will also win top search rankings.

“Social media spews out relevant content, builds relationships, engages, promotes back-linking and drives traffic to your website,” write Speyer and Leon-Speyer. “SEO can no longer be thought of as this mysterious code generating Tower of Babel. SEO has morphed into a pantheon of immortals ready to do battle for the hearts and minds of your target audience.”

Selling You on Facebook

Selling You on Facebook | Social Media Scooped! | Scoop.it
Many popular Facebook apps obtain sensitive information about users—and users' friends—so don't be surprised if details about your religious, political and even sexual preferences start popping up in unexpected places.

Not so long ago, there was a familiar product called software. It was sold in stores, in shrink-wrapped boxes. When you bought it, all that you gave away was your credit card number or a stack of bills.

Now there are "apps"—stylish, discrete chunks of software that live online or in your smartphone. To "buy" an app, all you have to do is click a button. Sometimes they cost a few dollars, but many apps are free, at least in monetary terms. You often pay in another way. Apps are gateways, and when you buy an app, there is a strong chance that you are supplying its developers with one of the most coveted commodities in today's economy: personal data.

Some of the most widely used apps on Facebook—the games, quizzes and sharing services that define the social-networking site and give it such appeal—are gathering volumes of personal information.

A Wall Street Journal examination of 100 of the most popular Facebook apps found that some seek the email addresses, current location and sexual preference, among other details, not only of app users but also of their Facebook friends. One Yahoo service powered by Facebook requests access to a person's religious and political leanings as a condition for using it. The popular Skype service for making online phone calls seeks the Facebook photos and birthdays of its users and their friends.

The Internet Conference :: Stop Putting All Your Focus on SEO and Focus on Social Media

The Internet Conference :: Stop Putting All Your Focus on SEO and Focus on Social Media | Social Media Scooped! | Scoop.it

A great article by Don Purdum about Social Media and SEO....a good time to consider joining Google+!

I’m going to make a very bold prediction. Traditional search engine optimization (SEO) is not dead yet, but it will be.

There, I said it.

Why?

Because social media has radically been changing the game for the past 18 months, and for better or worse Google is radically changing the rules of SEO with Googe+.  We are moving into an era where social is search, and search is social.

Just the other day I was in the store with my wife. We needed some help with an item and it struck me as interesting that when she didn’t know the answer, she went to Facebook to find. Not Google. She typed in the search bar at the top of the screen what she was looking for and not only Facebook results came up, but so did websites that had been linked to in Facebook.

Facebook to Introduce New Open Graph Apps, Gestures Wednesday [REPORT]

Facebook to Introduce New Open Graph Apps, Gestures Wednesday [REPORT] | Social Media Scooped! | Scoop.it
Facebook will introduce new apps based on its updated Open Graph and Gestures platforms on Wednesday, per a report.

Facebook will introduce apps based on its new Open Graph and Gesturesplatforms at an event Wednesday in San Francisco, according to a report. The apps will let users “frictionlessly” share based on actions other than “like,” “read” or “watch,” according to AllThingsD, which cites “sources” in the report. Reps from Facebook could not be reached for comment.

Facebook announced the upgrade to Open Graph at the f8 conference in San Francisco in September. The move was prompted by Facebook’s assertion that the Like button constrained sharing because it was an implicit endorsement of content. Facebook wants users to share everything they are doing, whether it’s watching a show or hiking a trail, so the company decided to create a way to “express lightweight activity.”

Since then, apps from Hulu, Spotify and The Washington Post have been based on the “read” and “watch” buttons. Now, Facebook plans to unveil a group of apps that use Gestures beyond those, according to the report.
