Food Tech: New Technology From Farm To Table

Food Tech: New Technology From Farm To Table | SocialMediaRestaurants.com | Scoop.it

Maybe the only thing people in the San Francisco Bay Area obsess over more than technology is food.

So it makes sense that there is so much interest in food startups in the area. I had the opportunity to moderate a panel of startups for the FoodStartups meet-up group recently. The speakers were a nice mix of companies working on different parts of the food chain. Some like Kitchit, focus on creating new ways for consumers to experience food and meals. Others like Localdirt connect consumers (and retailers) directly to healthy local food producers.

Grail Takes Alcohol Discovery Table Side

Grail Takes Alcohol Discovery Table Side | SocialMediaRestaurants.com | Scoop.it

Last week we brought you an interview with New York Alcohol Discovery startup Drynk.me. They provide an app that makes it easy to discovery new alcoholic beverages, snap pictures, jot down ingredients, and share with friends. This week we have an interview with Pittsburgh startup RhoMania who have just released a new app called “Grail” to restauranteurs to help restaurant patrons with their alcoholic beverage selection.
Grail is available in an iPad and web app version which allows restauranteurs to have servers bring an interactive alcohol menu which highlights the selection on site at that restaurant and pairs beverages with the food on the menu. Grail serves as an interactive wine and cocktail list which can be much more robust than traditional two sheet lists.
Where Drynk.me is a consumer facing app, Grail is designed to be utilized by restaurants. The hope is that the app will help increase liquor and beverage sales.
We got a chance to talk with the team behind RhoMania and the Grail app......

iPhone Add-on Sensors Test if Food Is Organic

iPhone Add-on Sensors Test if Food Is Organic | SocialMediaRestaurants.com | Scoop.it

Considering the hot mess that is our local grocery store, sometimes we have to wonder if the peach we're buying is truly organic. Luckily, an iPhone "appcessory" may be able to let us know come December.

Fast Company reports that a set of iPhone add-ons from the company Lapka will be able to measure humidity/temperature, radiation, electromagnetic frequencies, and organicity of food.

The latter peripheral measures organicity by checking for nitrate concentration with a steel probe; synthetic nitrogen is typically used in non-organic fertilizers.

Granted, a synthetic nitrogen test can only confirm if non-organic fertilizer was used; organic certification is based on inspection of the entire food production process. But at least you can double check to make sure your grocery store isn't relabeling products.

Why #Restaurants Are Moving to Social Media and Mobile Apps (Infographic) | SocialMediaRestaurants.com | Scoop.it

This is a common fact in today’s marketing. Using social media to boost and slingshot sales and traffic. Social media is a very very powerful tool for marketing and the food industry is not exempted. In fact, for me the food industry will be get the most benefit from social media.

With the skyrocketing popularity of different social media sites – Facebook, twitter, even tumblr, pinterest, and blogs, peoples opinions and voices were amplified a million times. If one person says that your food was good posted on facebook or tumblr and creates a tweet for it, a lot of people will take notice about how good the food was, what restaurant, who cook it, etc. and it will all lead to your food, to your business!

Young Entrepreneurs Find A Use For Wasted Food: Feeding The Hungry

Young Entrepreneurs Find A Use For Wasted Food: Feeding The Hungry | SocialMediaRestaurants.com | Scoop.it

In 2010, according to the USDA, 48.8 million Americans lived in food-insecure households, defined as “uncertain of having, or unable to acquire, enough food to meet the needs of all their members because they had insufficient money or other resources.” Meanwhile, the EPA estimates that 95 billion pounds of food are wasted annually. Recovering less than half of that amount could feed the millions in need. But where to begin?

A team of six Arizona State University students believe one solution lies in the power of social media. In 2011, Loni Amundson, Ramya Baratam, Steven Hernandez, Jake Irvin, Katelyn Keberle, and Eric Lehnhardt teamed up via the school’s Engineering Projects in Community Service program (EPICS) to create FlashFood, a food recovery network that uses text notifications to connect food-service vendors with those in need.......
