Responsive Web Design [Infographic] | Social Media Resources & e-learning | Scoop.it

Just think about, how many different tablets, laptops, netbooks and smartphones there are. It’s miracle that web designers and developers manage to stay sane. Of course there are Web standards and entire organizations that exist for the sole reason to make sure that Internet you see is generally the same Internet that everyone else sees. But a greater number of devices can face certain problems when you’re attempting to visit specific website. That’s where Responsive website design became a saving power for developers...

How Google Builds Its Maps—and What It Means for the Future of Everything

How Google Builds Its Maps—and What It Means for the Future of Everything | Social Media Resources & e-learning | Scoop.it

An exclusive look inside Ground Truth, the secretive program to build the world's best accurate maps.

Behind every Google Map, there is a much more complex map that's the key to queries but hidden from view. The deep map contains the logic of places: their no-left-turns and freeway on-ramps, speed limits and traffic conditions. This is the data that Google uses to navigate you from point A to point B.

Last week, Google showed me the internal map and demonstrated how it was built- the first time the company has let anyone see how the project it calls GT, or "Ground Truth," actually works.

Google opened up at a key moment in its evolution. The company began as an online search company, but then the mobile world exploded. Now, where you're searching from has become almost as important as what you're searching for. Google responded by creating an operating system, brand, and ecosystem that has become the only significant rival to Apple's iOS.

And for good reason. If Google's mission is to organize all the world's information, the most important challenge -- far larger than indexing the web -- is to take the world's physical information and make it accessible and useful...

Read the entire article for a fascinating look at how Google utilizes mapping systems, geo data, mobile technology, and visual representation to manage massive amounts of data from varying sources, including one of the most important to the success of Google Maps- human intelligence.

Infographic: The Astounding Power Of Pinterest

Infographic: The Astounding Power Of Pinterest | Social Media Resources & e-learning | Scoop.it
In our upcoming October design issue, one of the many fascinating feature stories we’ve lined up is a lengthy profile of Pinterest and its elusive CEO, Ben Silbermann.

That story goes live later this week, but until then, here's an infographic about Pinterest, created by Fast Company's staff and designed by our own Ted Keller.

In this profusion of figures, you find out a few, key things about the image-sharing service. For one, it’s dominated by women. Second, something about its layout and culture stokes an enormous buying impulse. And third, major brands are getting in on the act. It’s not a stretch to say that soon, at least on retail sites, a Pinterest button might become as ubiquitous as a Facebook Like. Check out the infographic, or tour the major findings in the accompanying slide show...

Tech will make us rethink age-grouping in schools

Tech will make us rethink age-grouping in schools | Social Media Resources & e-learning | Scoop.it

In the past couple of years, digital education has experienced such profound growth and investment that it’s not hard to imagine that its momentum will only continue to build and re-shape schools and classrooms. But as important as building the technology to enable competency-based classrooms is building teacher support and education for new models. The technology is increasingly there, but the challenge is breaking through bureaucracy and overcoming entrenched ways of thinking about how education is structured and experienced.

Maggie Milani's comment, July 19, 2016 2:26 PM
The second time reading this article it made me think: I think that technology could be used positively in the classroom. Most classrooms have computers and iPads for student use. There are always students who finish with their work before others. As a substitute teacher, I have found that teachers let these students who finish first grab an iPad. These iPads have educational apps, videos, and games for the students to play. These are fun for the students while they are also learning. These apps have different levels of difficulty which will be beneficial for the students to help challenge them when they are in a general classroom.
Taylor Steinfeldt's comment, July 25, 2016 4:01 PM
I babysit for a child with special needs and instead of her reaching for the remote all of the time, she grabs her school ipad, which is full of educational games. I am glad that technology can be a blessing and not just a curse, like we all think it is sometimes.
Courtnee DeMuth's comment, August 6, 2016 6:08 PM
I think the Khan Academy videos on youtube are great resources to use in the classroom! I also think the idea of flipping the classroom is really interesting, but I think it might need to take a few more trial runs in different levels of schools to see how it could work and what might need to be altered to make it work. I think using technology in the classroom can be beneficial to students, as long as it's available to them, but it shouldn't necessarily become the sole focus of the teaching style. It would be quite interesting to start grouping students by "mental age" rather than "actual age" because it could possibly foster more discussion and development since all the students would be at the same level academically.

Infographic: 6 Types of Blended Learning | Social Media Resources & e-learning | Scoop.it

Blended Learning is not so much an innovation as it is a natural by-product of the digital domain creeping into physical boundaries. As digital and social media become more and more prevalent in the life of learners, it was only a matter of time before learning became “blended” by necessity.

That said, there’s a bit more to Blended and “Hybrid” Learning than throwing in a little digital learning.
