Research shows that mind maps (graphic organizers) are effective during all stages of learning. You can use them as an introduction to a unit, during the unit for continued note taking, or at the conclusion as a formative assessment to make sure your students truly understand the material. I'm so in love with tools that help visualize what you do. This is a great list. I can't wait to try the ones I'm not familiar with.

Doesn't mention the physiological benefits of gaming, e.g. release of endorphins etc. Gaming can have a huge positive effect on people's emotions through release of brain chemicals, of course when undertaken at moderate levels:)

I am personally a big fan of 'gamification' and the motivational benefits to learning it brings. The work of Prof James Paul Gee is particularly brilliant. Here's a superb summary of the psychology behind why kids find video games so engaging. Delete the scoop?

If you thought that distance learning was a product of today, then you would be mistaken. In fact, the first distance learning program on record took place in 1728, when a local teacher by the name of Caleb Phillips advertised shorthand correspondence lessons offered by mail! By 1800, the growth of the U.S. Postal Service brought about an increase in the number of distance learning correspondence courses in the country. Delete the scoop?
