7 Tips To Help You Focus In Age of Distraction: Are You Content Fried!

7 Tips To Help You Focus In Age of Distraction: Are You Content Fried! | Social Media Optimization & Search Engine Optimization | Scoop.it

This weekend I'm focusing on information, filtering and meaning overload and useful ways to manage and utilize it. Having said that, there's so much good information, insights and tips in this post, I have to digest it slowly.

Beth Kanter has written a great post on this subject, sharing the way she's dealing with it and the 44 people who commented on it have some great things to add to the discussion.

Intro:

This morning I learned a new word for information overload - content fried from a colleague at the Packard Foundation.    It resonated.

I identify with this, here's what really caught my attention:

"The biggest difficulty I experience is the shifting from this forward flowing process of consuming, curating, and sense-making of content to learn versus to get something done".

****The latter requires a different type of attention and whole new set of information coping skills

Howard Rheingold calls this process managing your attention or “Infotention” and it is what he has been teaching in his courses.

I’ve been trying to curate content that offers ideas, tips, and resources to get past that ugly feeling of “content fried.” He curated the above mindmap.

Manage Your Attention, Not Just Your Time:

Don’t just create a to do list, lay it out on daily and weekly schedule, breaking down key tasks of the project to chunks.

****But consider the level of concentration and focus that each type of task or chunk requires – and schedule accordingly.

My question to you is:

What are your challenges? What ways are you drowning or prospering in this area? I'd love to hear from you.

Thanks Jan for curating this post. As I mentioned in Facebook, I have really been helped by Bregman's book, 18 MInutes! His techniques are fantastic. The book is written using stories to illustrate is concepts. I've been slowly trying to put them into practice. It takes discipline

If you are a business that relies on Google for organic search traffic and sales, personalised search results will become the norm when users are logged into their Google account.

The only solution? Join Google+. Create a brand page and become an active member. Get your brand page into as many influential people’s circles as possible, post keyword-rich status updates often in order to increase your relevance in important searches and do it in a natural non-spammy way.

4 Reasons For B2B Marketers To Explore Pinterest

4 Reasons For B2B Marketers To Explore Pinterest | Social Media Optimization & Search Engine Optimization | Scoop.it
Pinterest has made a big splash on the social media scene, by quickly earning passionate users who log multiple hours per day on the site.

I'll be honest I have NO CLUE what Pintrest is or how it works. But I noticed this ...

2. SEO value of inbound links

This one is a no-brainer for marketers looking to drive traffic to their content. Pinterest’s major selling point for users is the way it connects images – whether they’re product shots, infographics, photographs or even websites – with a stored link, making it easy to come back to pins’ original sources in the future.

These links are logged as inbound links to these respective websites, boosting SEO. When it comes to determining what is “pinnable” on your B2B website, consider helpful FAQs, blog posts, product images, infographics and videos.

Predicting the Future with Social Media

Predicting the Future with Social Media | Social Media Optimization & Search Engine Optimization | Scoop.it

Forget predictions from Nostradamus or the Mayan Calendar. Now, we have companies like Recorded Future analyzing semantics and sentiments to foretell the future. They do this by sorting through thousands of news publications, blogs, tweets, comments, trade journals, government web sites, financial databases, and more. Recorded Future sees ahead “By applying temporal analytics to what is written about the future, and by algorithmically crowd-sourcing the resulting temporal information, we can draw conclusions and gain insight.” Now even small businesses can tap into the trove of rich data and forward-looking insights.

Will iBooks Author be a professional or a mainstream publishing tool?

Will iBooks Author be a professional or a mainstream publishing tool? | Social Media Optimization & Search Engine Optimization | Scoop.it

This is one of the first hands on reviews of Apple's new iBook publishing tool: iBooks Author. By Harrison Weber for TheNextWeb.

As he puts, Apple users - which are many in education, Apple's historical core segment - won't be surprised: "The app actually feels like I’ve used it before". But he also balances that by saying that "it’s easier than ever to create for iBooks, but everything is so customizable that it seems like a professional layout design may still be necessary." He also wonders about the target audience as the App was introduced as the authoring tool for TextBooks for iPads but clearly as a broader purpose: "Shorter books, in fact any sort of book other than a giant textbook, may be a better candidate for this app, which is why it’s interesting that Apple has focused so much on textbooks instead of every type of book."

Might be a good time to wake up the writer in all of us?

Why Marketers Must Pay Attention to Google+

Why Marketers Must Pay Attention to Google+ | Social Media Optimization & Search Engine Optimization | Scoop.it

This piece was written by Pamela Vaughn on Hubspot

Google is forcing Google+ on the world, and why marketers can't turn their back on the search and social giant.

Here's a takeaway:

**Google+ is obviously impacting search, but it's also giving Google the leverage it needs to dominate the web.

**Even if just for the search component, businesses can't afford not to jump on the Google+ bandwagon.

**If you haven't already done so, create your Google+ business page today and start optimizing your business' Google+ presence.

Taking Charge of Tomorrow Means Rethinking The Workplace To Support Work

Taking Charge of Tomorrow Means Rethinking The Workplace To Support Work | Social Media Optimization & Search Engine Optimization | Scoop.it

I believe it starts with rethinking—from the ground up—the role of a workplace professional. I’ve recently been tracking several debates about the definition of “facilities management” as discussed across a number of LinkedIn groups.

Without dwelling on the specific threads, I have to say that most of the contributors seem to have a very limited view of their jobs. They focus on keeping their buildings open and clean, on controlling costs, on ensuring business continuity, and sometimes on improving sustainability.

In contrast, I believe your job as workplace professional is to support work, wherever and whenever it takes place. And for me “support” means focusing on the work itself, and how it’s being done, almost more than the workplace.

What is Content Curation?

What is Content Curation? | Social Media Optimization & Search Engine Optimization | Scoop.it
I selected this piece by Dino Joannides for Lingospot because it tackles a much asked and frequently tackled answered of "What is Curation?" in the most appropriate manner possible. That is to say, he answers the question with an excellent example of curation, complete with multiple links to articles that prove his points.

Some points that caught my attention:

**Content curation means different things to a variety of stakeholders, be they journalists, editors, bloggers, business executives or marketers.

**Fred Wilson the Venture Capitalist and blogger sees curation as an essential element in today's media landscape as indicated by one of his posts here

.

**Some argue that curation could actually save media.

**Others have argued that there is a new type of curation that is in effect the New Search.

**Most people inadvertently already act as curators whenever they decide to post a link or video to their social networks to show their friends they have found great or topical content.

He closes by suggesting traditional editors make decisions based only upon content that was produced internally, whereas the newer Curation mixes this with external content. The determination of what is given prominence remains the same.

The difference is that now, this role is undertaken by professional journalists, content marketers, bloggers" or in reality, anyone that publishes online".

What do you think?
