**It is increasingly easier to publish information and increasingly difficult to consume it.

 

What most caught my attention:

 

**Excessive attention to what is being said within the user’s circle of trust limits the scope of the information consumption.

 

**The user’s perspective is not challenged, instead it is reinforced

 

**Users generally follow people that they respect at a personal level.

 

**It is understandable that they don’t have the desire to follow people that they dislike or that have the opposite view

 

**Lists, Circles and Subscriptions aren’t reducing the noise

 

**Following more people still equals a broader information scope and even more noise.

 

I agree wholeheartedly that it is our inclination to seek validation.  We must choose our sources and our curators very carefully to avoid seeing only what we are hoping to find.  But choose, we must!  The volume is just too great for anyone to do otherwise for a sustainable period of time.

 

If you're not careful you can escape the Google filter bubble to one of your own making. To avoid this, you may have to follow people who's views you may not agree with but at least you'll get the broader picture.

There were so many things that I could comment on but my primary focus in 2012 is the future of content curation, the evolution and its impact on how we utilize and digest data in our business and personal lives. How will curation be perceived in 2012 and what will the monetary value be for content curation? 

 

Having said that, this is what particularly caught my attention:

 

Information Doesn’t Want to be Free– In 1984 at a Hackers Conference, Silicon Valley futurist Stuart Brand was the first to use the phrase: “Information wants to be free” in response to a point made by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak but continued

 

“On the other hand, information wants to be expensive, because it’s so valuable.

 

**"The right information in the right place just changes your life."

 

**This set the stage for an entirely new era of free-thinking “free” advocates"

 

****My commentary: One of the reasons trusted content curators will become a very valuable asset to the information economy:

 

****"There is always a cost to “free.”

 

****While it may not extract a payment from your bank account, there is always a “time” cost involved.

 

****Without some amount of friction, the volume of information you have to sift through skyrockets and even with good search technology, your time-costs climb dramatically.

**While it is true that the Internet is eliminating many of the gatekeepers, people trying to break into a field without going through gatekeepers find it far harder to gain credibility and foster a “trust” relationship with their audiences.

Lee Odden CEO at Toprankblog interviewed 10 thought leaders on content marketing and curation. The article was published one year ago but is still really relevant, probably even more. I love the approach of Brian Solis who asks the good questions :

"Obviously you (as a company) have something to contribute, something to say, something of value to offer which is mostly likely why you’re in business. I need to hear about that."

 

Curation offers the opportunity to settle this dialogue between a brand and its users, becoming always more engaging. It's not enough to be here, you have to be here to say. As says Ann Handley, Chief Content Officer at @marketingprofs, "All organizations are now publishers — meaning, the company with the most engaging and interesting content is the one who wins."

Also: I think it would be very appropriate when curating something that is over a year old to say so explicitly as it is an extra element of immediate evaluation for the reader.

This has me thinking critically about how we are integrating social media. Inviting interaction has been a huge challenge. We are stimulating new conversations in real world time, but that's not reflected in comments and so forth. Bob Brown of Network World has curated news of two very interesting Twitter research projects that caught my attention.

 

We all agree that freedom of speech is good,  and it's great that everyone can now  become a publisher. However, there's a double-edged sword: If we speak to a friend before we think something though, all will surely be forgiven and forgotten. After all, we all make mistakes. But if you click that Tweet or Share button too quickly, either succumbing to knee-jerk reactions or without first checking the facts, you may find the digital world to be less forgiving.

 

Content curators have to be especially vigilent about curating someone else's content to make sure the facts and information are correct.

 

I believe the research related to here is essential reading, as it is furtherment of an established and growing trend:

 

One relates to Wellesley College's Department of Computer Science where two professors have been awarded a near half million dollar National Science Foundation grant to:

 

****build an application that gauges the trustworthiness of information shared on social networks, and in particular Twitter.

 

This was originally envisioned as a form of spammer identification, but

 

****has broadened to be able to determine the past history of a tweeter and also whether information being received is available from multiple sources. 

 

The other brings us news of 'Tweetographer', a huge Data Mining project by two University of Cincinatti Computer Science students, descibed as:

 

"a real-time events guide extracted from information coming via large numbers of tweets." 

 

This could be available as a web or mobile app at the end of the year and one of the co-creators, Billy Clifton (his partner is Alex Padgett)

 

**sees the uses expanding in the future to predict election results and compiling product reviews.

 

My takeaways are:

 

**that we all need to be very aware that what we tweet today can and may be used against us in the future

 

**search is still very much in its infancy when it comes to engine sophistication, stay tuned.

**In this world of information overload, there’s now a new layer in the media ecosystem: the curator. If it wasn’t for that person who retweeted the story in the first place, you probably wouldn’t have seen it.

 

**So naming the retweeters in daily promos is the right course of action. Twitter is like a fire hose and Paper.li is selecting random tweets that would have otherwise been missed.

 

**Yes, they’re randomly chosen but I find a lot of value in them because they praise others for their contributions.

 

**It reminds me that they’re part of my network and I can appreciate their contributions that much more. I know when I’m named in someone’s newspaper it motivates me to continue sharing that type of content.

I selected this piece by Dino Joannides for Lingospot because it tackles a much asked and frequently tackled answered of "What is Curation?" in the most appropriate manner possible. That is to say, he answers the question with an excellent example of curation, complete with multiple links to articles that prove his points.

 

Some points that caught my attention:

 

**Content curation means different things to a variety of stakeholders, be they journalists, editors, bloggers, business executives or marketers.

 

**Fred Wilson the Venture Capitalist and blogger sees curation as an essential element in today's media landscape as indicated by one of his posts here

.

**Some argue that curation could actually save media.

 

**Others have argued that there is a new type of curation that is in effect the New Search.

 

**Most people inadvertently already act as curators whenever they decide to post a link or video to their social networks to show their friends they have found great or topical content.

 

He closes by suggesting traditional editors make decisions based only upon content that was produced internally, whereas the newer Curation mixes this with external content. The determination of what is given prominence remains the same.

Yesterday I selected a post by Elad Gil who talked about Pinterest being the next big shiney thing on the web. Today I have selected another article by Don Reisinger    for Cnet News - digital home, who has more to say about this.

 

I do admit I'm participating on many betas because I feel the need to stay informed. I'm not usually drawn to every new thing that comes along but somehow, Pinterest has caught my eye.

 

Let's take a look at why Pinterest is becoming one of the most popular social networks, what's really happening here?

 

Here's what caught my attention:

 

**Pinterest so far has been the only company to distinguish itself. Late last month, Experian Hitwise, a company that monitors consumer behavior on the Web, reported that Pinterest had 11 million visits during the week ended December 17, jumping 4,000 percent compared with six months earlier.

 

**The massive bump catapulted Pinterest to the 10th spot in Experian's listing of the most popular social networks, just behind Yelp. Experian also discovered that Pinterest has found a loyal following in women.

 

**In the past three months, women have accounted for 58 percent of its userbase, and nearly 60 percent of those women are between the ages of 25 and 44.

 

**Opinions are mixed over why Pinterest has been able to attract such a large audience.

 

**Is it the service's solid design? Is it the attention it has received from media outlets shocked by its growth?

 

**Is it, perhaps, the fact that it recently raised $26 million from venture-capital firm Andreessen Horowitz, giving it bundles of cash to play with? It could be all that.

 

**But Gil thinks it might also have something to do with its ease-of-use.

 

**"Pinterest was one of the first sites to take push button content generation (via bookmarklets and 're-pinning') and structure it into sets of curated content called 'boards

 

**This allowed users to collect content from across the Web, as well as from other users on the site.

 

Reisinger ends his article with a word of caution:

 

**"Pinterest has yet to offer its service publicly. And once it finally moves beyond its invite-only phase, the company will be truly tested."

 

Followed by the question: 

 

**"will the mainstream Web user who typically joins the social game after early adopters pick up their invites, find value in it?"

 

** Chances are, we'll get the answers to those questions later this year.

Part One deals with Realtime Curation, the realm of people like Robert Scoble, Guy Kawasaki, and Mari Smith  they are followed on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+ by so many people because of their ability to surface and post content their readers appreciate, enjoy, and spread around their own networks.

 

This piece deals with 'Curated Hubs', "which is just a fancy name for blog curation".

 

This is what captured my attention:

 

A well curated hub will include

 

***trackback links from cited sites, which improve search rankings for the curator, and

 

***monetization through traditional methods of paid advertising, affiliate sales, list marketing, or products and services you provide directly

 

The Value Proposition in a site must

 

***create a knee-jerk reaction in first time visitors to want to bookmark, subscribe, or somehow make a note that this is a site they must visit regularly and

 

***The person behind the curation is not just an aggregator of content, but someone with opinion and insight to add to the discussion and the outside sources they curate into their posts

 

The crux of the article is summed up as

 

****Getting hub curation right means providing a value in the marketplace that is sought after by a significant portion of the ideal reader demographic you wish to attract. Get this down, and you’ll have the traffic, rankings, and discussion on social networks to provide you with monetization opportunities out the wazoo.

 

And the bottom line?  You control the entire process, up to and including whatever action you want your readers to take that makes your content marketing profitable.

 

Under the sub-heading "Whose Castle are you Building", which means, you have to build your own platform the author writes:

 

****This you cannot do on a third-party site owned by someone else.

 

****In every instance where someone has built a third-party, hosted solution for publishing it has been an utter failure for the publishers in terms of maximizing profitability of all the eyes they attract.

 

****It is always better for the owner of the network than it is the publisher. Always!

 

****So neverput your business in the hands of anyone else.

Robin Good has a question and I'd like to know too:

Can you sight some examples of this "well curated hubs" that monetize as described. That would be very helpful.
Yes, I do see Techmeme, Engadget and the others, but I was looking more for real-world ones built by passionate individuals, and not by startups that have been at it for years with VC money behind it.

Are there examples of this model working also for small independent publishers?

Never forget the social part of social media

 

**Always reply back to people that initiate contact

 

**Be proactive don’t only follow people but initiate contact, and not using an auto-DM message either

 

**Thank people for sharing your content and mentioning you

"David Shing, AOL's 'digital prophet' tells Dublin Web Summit that defriending and unfollowing will be the next trend among social media users..."

 

"People are going to start defriending people who constantly tweet and post on Facebook with rubbish info," he said.

 

Similarly for brands, he said it's very dangerous for companies to get involved on social networks unless they can guarantee a meaningful conversation.

Tony Karrer wrote this post on September 7, 2011 - I find it extremely relevant and am interested in looking at the possibility of curators collaborating on content around a specific topic and how that might evolve in the future.

 

I had the priviledge of listening to Clay Shirky today talk about harvesting collective wisdom and the implications of that. There are no accidents as this piece seems to be exploring an aspect of this subject.

 

Tony is reacting to a blog post he read, Ville Kilkku titled: Klout, Triberr, paper.li, and the future of content curation. He has some very good observations, too many to list but I've highlighted a few things to set the tone for the article.

 

Three Major Trends in Curation

 

**From individual content curators to crowdsourced content curation: Individuals cannot keep up with the pace of new content, even though they have better discovery tools than before.

 

**Crowdsourcing can, although it is not suitable for promoting radical new ideas: the dictatorship of the masses is unavoidably conservative.

 

**From manual to semi-automated content curation: Individual content curators are forced to automate as much of the process as possible in order to stay relevant.

 

**From content curation to people curation: When there is too much content, you vet the content creators, manually or automatically. Those who pass get exposure for all of their content.

 

****How do these trends interact? This is particularly interesting to me and it will be fascinating to watch this evolve.

 

****Social networking of the content creator is vitally important in order to create an audience as isolated content becomes increasingly difficult to discover and

 

****curation focuses on people instead of individual content.

 

**Build it, and they will come, is dead.

Twitter has certainly come a long way since that day in 2006 when it opened for the public to sign up.

As of lately, it seems Twitter has gotten their act together, and they are actually doing quite well. That is, apart from the whole direct message thing not working properly and missing tweets.

 

I wonder how much they are working on that, and when it’s actually going to be solved. It would be interesting to know if they have even located the problem yet. This article isn’t about all the bugged code that obviously will be fixed in the near future (hopefully). It’s about the history of the brand as a whole.

 

The social media news site Mashable recently put together an infographic outlining the most significant milestones and records that portray the growth and importance that Twitter has been able to achieve.

 

What was considered a lot of tweets two years ago is quite ordinary today. For example, when Michael Jackson died, at the peak, there were 456 tweets sent every second.

 

When Beyonce announced she was pregnant, there were 8,868 tweets sent every second. That’s saying quite a lot about how much Twitter has grown since back in 2009 alone. It’s impressive and inspiring to say the least!
