Is Social Media Taking Over SEO?

Is Social Media Taking Over SEO? | Social Media News | Scoop.it

Social or SEO? The fact is that these days, SEO is a broad term which encompasses content creation and off-page work, as well as optimizing website’s themselves. Really, anyone working in the SEO space is working on a number of tactics, all associated with digital marketing.

Recently, it seems that because of social, there is now more of a blurred line between traditional advertising, PR and online marketing. This is due to the nature of social, which means having a more personal, hands-on approach to marketing.

Matthew Pivac's curator insight, September 26, 2013 5:38 PM

The "Is social Media Taking Over SEO" article is very insightfull. It cuts right to the chase and provides good information through an obvious in-depth knowledge into the field. It details the competition between SEO and Social media in todays fast moving technology based world. It defines SEO as being your more traditional form of digital marketing through website's and things of this nature which really rely on the consumer to search into to connect to, as apposed to the more personal relationship that social media marketing has with people as it gives the impression that they are coming to the consumer to connect and build a relationship.

Daryl Peterson's comment, September 26, 2013 9:32 PM
Yes Matt this article is very insightful. I like how the article doesnt beat around the bush but goes straight to the point. In an ever changing world with ever evolving technology we see just how much of an impact social media has on the world around us.The article talks about social media vs SEO which is a more traditionalised way of connecting with consumers. However social media still has a much clearer advantage over SEO as it is rapidly growing with more users joining everyday its the most efficient way to interact with consumers in the world today

Do you know the history of social media? Think we'll remember Facebook in 20 years? This detailed timeline is a must-see.

Social media began decades before the Facebook era. It started, more or less, with CompuServe and Arpanet back in 1969. A couple years later, the first-ever email was sent.

It has evolved over the past few decades into a powerful tool, as seen in this social media history timeline. With so much that’s happened over the past few decades, we can only guess what’s coming next for social media.

Take A Look At What Happens Every Single Minute On The Internet | Social Media News | Scoop.it
Early last year we learned that one hour of YouTube is uploaded every second. It was a bracing reminder of just how many people are spending their time online simultaneously.

Created by rewards site Qmee, the infographic "Online In 60 Seconds" is a pie chart that shows off the sheer amount of online activity that takes place every single minute. The amount of YouTube videos uploaded has already increased from January 2012's 60 hours per minute to 72. Additionally, over 1.8 million things are liked on Facebook, and 278 thousand bon mots tweeted. Not depicted in the chart: the amount of work that is going undone while all of these items are being viewed.

UX 101: What Is User Experience? [infographic] | Social Media News | Scoop.it

When it comes to design, user experience is one of the key things.

According to this infographic, 68% of users leave because of poorly designed websites and 62% of customers base future purchases on past experiences. These stats alone are clear enough that UX (User Experience) isn’t something that can be taken lightly. The life and blood of your business might very well depend on this factor alone.

2013's Complex Social Media Landscape in One Chart

2013's Complex Social Media Landscape in One Chart | Social Media News | Scoop.it

When Brian Solis introduced the first Conversation Prism in 2008, the world was a seemingly simpler place. There were 22 social media categories, each of which had just a handful of brands.

Flash forward to 2013, and the latest Conversation Prism has four additional categories with at least six brands in each. Like other Conversation Prisms, the data visualization attempts to illustrate the array of social media choices available to marketers.

While the 2008 chart looked like a flower, the latest one resembles a kaleidoscope. Solis, a prominent social media marketing expert, says redoing the chart this time around has been instructive. "Things are changing so fast," he says. "We don't even realize [the landscape] is shifting."

The chart also points out that, for many, membership in the social media ecosystem is fleeting. While some brands like Xanga, Kyte and Utterz have disappeared, others that weren't around five years ago — like Path and Banjo — are now among category leaders.

Denis Lundie's curator insight, July 8, 2013 5:23 AM

Social media, as expected, are proliferating and also being embedded in collaboration applications. They can be public or private. Different social media appeal to different segments of the population for different reasons. Individuals can, and do, join different social networks for different interests or relationships in their lives. Finally, they are quite simply applications, with different functionality, will behave differently.

Much has been made in media and education circles of Facebook and Twitter, ranging from the inherent dangers to teaching by means of these, and how to integrate them into education. Policies have been developed around them. This picture should dispel the hype surrounding the most obvious social networks, as unique threats or opportunities, for learning.

IT strategies and policies should not developed around individual applications, especially not social networks. e-Safety education especially, should focus on responsible management of privacy, irrespective the medium. Teaching & learning opportunities should be sought in social media that are built for learning, or embedded in rapidly evolving learning applications.
