Back in 2012, I published an article that predicted Social Shares is the New SEO.


Depending on how you look at it and how active your social media marketing efforts are, while social shares may not have the ranking influence of a PR5 link, try and compete in your niche without have a strong social media presence to expand your reach and expand your brand awareness.

This Star Wars Trailer Will Blow Your Marketing Mind

I know you're as excited as I am for the new Star Wars film to be released. And, like me, you probably needed an oxygen mask after watching the trailers.

As I thought about the third trailer, in particular, I began to notice some production elements that really spoke to me. Not just as a Star Wars fan, but as a blogger and marketer. I also became keenly aware of how the trailers have progressed over time, referring both to the three trailers for the latest film, Episode VII, but also the trailers for the original trilogy and prequels.

I thought it was worth spending some time digging into them and exploring how they've changed, and how the third trailer was actually an incredibly brilliant piece of marketing content.

You, too, must learn the ways of J.J. Abrams if you are to become a Jedi.

Do you keep old, bad, blog ideas around?

A couple of years ago, I had an idea for a blog post. I wanted to point out all of the things that bloggers sometimes do wrong with their blogs, a kind of What Not To Do post, but I thought I could frame it like a Dear John letter.

Dear Mr. Blogger. I'm breaking up with you and your blog today because...

And then go on and list the reasons. Sounds neat, right?

It sucked.

I just could not, for the life of me, make that thing work. It probably boils down to the fact that in a Dear John letter, you're not going to go into depth on the criticisms and offer suggestions, you'd just list what's wrong and move on.

But here's the thing. Since I use Evernote and wrote the post as a note within my Blog notebook, I saw it. Daily. Over and over. 

I kept revisiting that post in my mind, months after I'd already decided it was rubbish.

So the question is, have you ever had an idea or even partial post like that? And if so, what did you do? Did you keep trying to make it work, or did you trash it?
